Chapter 1068: Pure evil, it hurts.
[SHORT FLASHBACK]
A knock from the door caressed Dominic’s ears, making him glance at it. Seeing Dane stepping into the office, he set his eyes down on the document he was reading.
"I brought the files you asked of me, sir," said Dane as he put down the files on the desk.
Dominic didn’t respond nor did he react. He simply kept his eyes on the document where he was writing some pointers without saying anything. When another minute had passed and he sensed that Dane wasn’t leaving, he slowly looked up.
"Why are you still here?" asked Dominic, glancing at the clock on the side of his desk. "Clock out. You don’t have to wait for me."
"I already clocked out, boss." Dane casually propped his side against the desk, crossing his arms under his chest. "I did it before bringing these files to you."
"Then why are you still here?"
"Well..." Dane hummed a long tune, pondering on the effective excuse he could use. "Everyone in the CEO’s department will have dinner tonight."
"And so?"
"We’ll drink to our heart’s content, sing, dance, and maybe talk bad about our boss, whose card we’re using to pay for everything," he reasoned with a shrug. "I’m just thinking you should be there."
"To listen to how my employees talk bad about me?"
Dane frowned. "Sir, do you seriously think we can say anything bad about you if you’re there? We won’t even say anything good — I mean, we can’t say anything at all!"
"I know." Dominic nodded. "Then why are you here?"
"You owe me a drink."
"You said it yourself," Dominic casually leaned back. "The card you’d use tonight is mine. Buy yourself as much booze as you can drink. Maybe, invite some of your good friends from other departments. You guys don’t have a budget limit tonight."
Studying Dominic’s expression, the frown on Dane’s face turned uglier.
"Fine!" Dane rolled his eyes as he reluctantly peeled his body away from the desk. As he walked away, he stopped and turned around to face Dominic. "Boss, you would never buy me a drink ever, would you?"
"I am buying you tonight."
"But you’re not drinking it with me!"
"Work wife," said Dominic monotonously, making Dane knit his brows. "That’s what my wife calls you."
"Me?" Dane pointed at himself, scrunching up his nose. "Sir, you know the young madam always finds ways to find fault in me! Don’t tell me she’s jealous of me. I am straight! I like women!"
"But she also said I’m too pretty for a man." Dominic rubbed his chin. "She even said if she was born a man, she would bend."
Dane gasped in horror, thinking of all the virulent ideas Heaven was spewing to his boss! Surely, Heaven’s degeneracy knows no bounds! Or was she trying to put a wedge between him and Dominic? So she could proceed with her evil plans of stealing his job!?
Knowing how clingy Heaven could be, it wouldn’t surprise him if she ended up in the CEO’s office. Heck. She even applied as Dominic’s driver some time ago! Dane knew Dominic kept her application form in his drawer, saying, "Just in case."
"The young madam can be really scary!" Dane shivered, rubbing his shoulders mildly. "So? Did she ask you to fire me?"
"She didn’t, but she had expressed her concerns. Especially after giving birth to Miracle."
"I guess that means I have to stay away from her line of sight," Dane sighed deeply, scared that Heaven would become full-blown psychotic. He shook his head, dragging his feet away.
"Work wife?" Dane whispered in dismay. "Don’t tell me her nonsense is evolving too?"
As Dane approached the door to leave Dominic alone, he stopped when he heard the latter speak. He looked back, brows furrowed, watching Dominic take something from his drawer.
"My wife isn’t that terrible," said Dominic, closing the drawer after taking a small envelope. He then slowly rose from his seat, marching to Dane’s spot while talking.
"She can be silly, but she always tries her best to accept things and people that were a huge part of my life." Dominic stopped a step from Dane, handing him the envelope. "The best thing about our marriage is probably our willingness to compromise and meet halfway."
"What is this?" Dane asked as he curiously took the envelope from Dominic. "This isn’t a termination contract, is it?"
"A termination is a hundred times thicker than that." Dominic jerked his chin toward the envelope. "Open it and let me know what you think."
Dane furrowed his brows as he opened the envelope, pulling out the small card from inside it. He narrowed his eyes as he read the first text above before his pupils dilated in surprise.
"We want you to be Miracle’s godfather," Dominic smiled subtly. "My wife suggested it, saying since you’re my work wife, she believes you could nurse Miri if she isn’t available."
"Are those her exact words?"
"Mhm. Though obviously, you can’t nurse Miri. She’s being... playful."
Or sarcastic.
Dane was rendered speechless, gazing down at the christening invitation. Deep lines appeared between his brows and then looked up at Dominic again.
"But why —"
"You are part of the family," Dominic answered before Dane could even finish his question. "You’re like a brother to me, and I trust you enough to be a part of my children’s lives."
A reassuring smile reigned on Dominic’s face. "Even so, it’s your decision to accept it or not. No harsh feelings."
"No harsh feelings... is that the young madam said?"
"She didn’t say that, but I do."
"Goodness." Dane breathed out as he gazed down at the card in his hand. "This is... this is amazing."
"I’ll take that as a yes, then." Dominic patted Dane’s shoulder before he turned his back on him.
Staring at Dominic’s back, Dane cleared his throat. "You’re really not coming with us?"
"When I said drinking is bad for your health, I meant it." Dominic continued his steps without looking back. When he reached his desk, he looked at Dane and nodded at him. "I care about my work wife’s health. Have fun, but not at the risk of your health."
"Uh... alright." Dane massaged his nape as he awkwardly replied. "Gosh. This is embarrassing."
As Dane turned around, he kept mumbling about how Heaven always finds ways to give these strange ideas to people. But just as he reached for the knob, Dominic spoke again.
"Dane," called Dominic, watching Dane look back. "Thank you."
"Huh?"
Dominic just smiled and nodded while Dane wondered if he should ask more questions. In the end, Dane pressed his lips and nodded. This time, Dominic didn’t stop him from leaving. But when Dane stepped out, he paused and smiled, chuckling briefly.
"Miracle’s godfather... heh. What gifts are proper for christening?"

Meanwhile,Dominic kept his eyes on the door with an appreciative smile. After what Leon did to Dominic many years ago, trust was something he erased from his vocabulary. But because of Dane’s persistence, Dominic slowly opened up his heart to the possibility that not everyone was as cruel as Leon Zhu.
And because of that, Dominic found the courage to let people into his heart. Dane made the crack around the walls in his heart, and Heaven broke it down completely. Now, Dominic was at the point in his life where he could say he was at the happiest.
Hence, his gratefulness to his assistant.

[PRESENT TIME]
Dominic didn’t know why he suddenly thought of that memory in the past while staring at the pair of eyes before him. His eyelids drooped as sorrow peeked through them.
The whys, the whats, the hows, and all those sorts disappeared from his mind. All that was left was the pain of betrayal by someone he trusted the most. Why Dane did do it, or questions like what were his thoughts while Dominic was dancing to his tunes? They didn’t matter anymore.
What Dane did was pure evil.
This betrayal was even more painful than what Leon did.
"This might be a lame trap or a desperate attempt to make yourself feel better before you die. But I’ll kill Hera and everyone who stands in my way the same way I’ll kill you tonight."
Dominic drew a deep breath as he glanced at Dane’s finger. He didn’t even close his eyes, watching how Dane pulled the trigger without a second hesitation.
