Chapter 1066: Bad habits truly die hard
Meanwhile...
The chase between Dane and Dominic still went on, with the latter following him at a safe distance. Dane would shoot at him every once in a while to create distance between them. Although Dominic fired back a few times, he was too busy hiding from Dane’s random shots.
"Damn it." Dane breathed out, panting for air as he gazed ahead.
If he continued on this path, he would enter a path cut through the tall grasses. But if he made a turn, he would be out in the open. He believed Dominic had backups. Considering Alfred didn’t come when a shot was fired, it meant someone was keeping him busy.
With that thought in mind, Dane rushed to the pathway ahead. The tall grasses would help him hide himself. Not to mention, it was nighttime. Using a flashlight or any source of light would be disadvantageous for them too.
"Dominic!" he yelled before he looked back to shoot him twice. "Tch!"
His eyes blazed in irritation, picking up his pace. In no time, he stepped into the field and planned to disappear from there. It might be annoying that even after shooting Dominic a couple of times, he found a way to dodge the bullet.
"It’s their goddamn fault!" he grumbled through his gritted teeth. "I bet Bernard is with him."
Back then, although Dominic had good stamina and regularly exercised, he wasn’t good in real-life battles. Target shooting might be one of his hobbies, which he would do once every three months. However, real-life targets and battles were far different from shooting just objects.
This was no longer the Dominic he knew.
The man coming after him was no longer an innocent man. His hands were soiled. They said killing somebody was only hard the first time. But it would get easier over time.
"Reapers... Heaven Liu... I’ll kill all of them," He pledged while grinding his teeth. "I’m not going down tonight."
As Dane went further into the field, Dominic approached carefully. This field was perfect for someone like Dane. Did he choose to go to this place, in case of emergencies like this? Dominic looked up, barely catching movements in the tall grasses.
’I’ll lose him,’ he thought, picking up his pace when he noticed the soft ground. Looking down, he narrowed his eyes. His lips curled up into a smile, following the trail ahead.
"This bad habit of his," he muttered, following the tracks Dane left behind with his gaze. "I’m glad he never listens to me whenever I say he makes mistakes whenever he’s under pressure."
Perhaps Dane hadn’t realized that his bad habits as Dane Zhang were also Dimitri’s bad habits. For instance, he would tend to make mistakes whenever the pressure was high. He messed things up. Although he would find a way to fix things most of the time, Dominic would always help him.
’You’ll never have the time to fix things this time,’thought Dominic, picking up his pace and randomly shooting ahead.
Dane, who hadn’t gotten far, ducked on instinct. But the ground was soft and slippery, subsequently falling on his chest. He winced when his chin touched the mud, looking back angrily.
"You fucker!" he yelled, shooting at him one more time. "Did I get him?"
Dane lay on his stomach for a while, observing his surroundings. There was a high chance he shot Dominic. After all, it suddenly went quiet. For sure, Dominic was just right behind him, walking on the same pathway he did.
After a few seconds, Dane heard a faint rustle.
"Shit," he breathed out, pushing himself up. "Just how lucky can he be?"
Snapping his tongue in irritation, Dane hurriedly pushed himself away from the ground. He shot another one, assuming his moment of pause had lessened their distance. He dragged his feet, noticing how heavy he had gotten. When he looked down, all he saw was mud covering his front and clinging to his shoes and pants.
"Tch," he hissed one more time, taking a step, only to stop abruptly. He looked down once more, eyes on his mud-covered pants. Looking back, he noticed the shoe print he left behind. "Shit!"
Panic swelled in his chest upon realizing how Dominic was able to follow him, even with the tall grasses. Dominic didn’t have to see Dane to know where he was. All he had to do was follow the trail the latter left.
With this realization uncovered in his mind, Dane looked around. He shook his head, trying to think straight to salvage his situation. After a second, an idea suddenly struck him. He stomped his feet on the ground, leaving multiple shoe prints. To buy himself some more time, he shot in the direction where he suspected Dominic was.
Dane opened fire aggressively, planning to jump on the side and hide within the tall grasses. Running away was futile. He had to settle it with Dominic once and for all. To do that, he had to hide and wait for his prey to take the bait.
"I’m not going to fall here," he told himself after almost creating a big puddle. He fired one more time, but this time, his weapon only clacked. He pulled the trigger one more time, only to realize he was out of ammo.
"Damn it," he winced, pulling the trigger a couple more times, but to no avail. He felt his pockets for a reload, only to realize he didn’t have time to keep an extra magazine with him. All his weapons were left in the cabin, and only brought this one with him.
"Shit!" he cursed through his gritted teeth, glaring at the direction he came from again. Dominic didn’t shoot back anymore. Thus, even if it was risky, Dane planned to loot him after jumping him. But just as Dane was about to jump to the side of the pathway to hide and wait for Dominic, he felt a presence behind him.
Dane froze as he heard a faint cock and a cold metal pressing at the back of his head. His breath hitched until his neck turned taut, realizing Dominic hadn’t been following him from the same pathway. But rather, he went to the side, walked through the tall grasses, and now caught up to him.
"Bad habits truly die hard, Dane." When Dominic’s deep, husky baritone caressed his ears, Dane knew he couldn’t execute his plans anymore. "Just enough pressure and you’ll lose your cool. I guess working for me is truly convenient since you weren’t afraid of falling back, knowing you can fail... with me as your ally."
