Chapter 1065: Never had a chance to begin with

BANG!

Alfred perked up as soon as he heard gunshots. He turned to the door, brows furrowed. He had only arrived at his lodging, barely able to sit down when he heard that noise.

"What’s going on?" he asked himself, picking up his rifle on instinct. "An enemy?"

If it was an enemy, that would be terrible.

Right now, Dane was vulnerable. He sent most of their men to retrieve the shipments. On their way here, Dane sent the rest to back up the first group. In other words, there were only a few of them to guard him. If their enemies came in full-blown units, then they had no choice but to flee.

With that thought in mind, Alfred’s nose flared as he huffed.

"A client? Another unit from Interpol? The reapers?" he wondered as he trudged toward the door. "This is bad."

At this point, all he could hope was that Dane was just practicing target shooting. That this was a false alarm. But alas, when he reached the door, he heard a few rounds of gunshot being fired.

Alarmed, he picked up his pace and flung the door open.

As soon as the door flew open, Alfred caught an old man with a broad physique standing right outside his doorstep. His eyes dilated as his breath hitched, moving his rifle on instinct. But the person outside was just as swift as him, grabbing the body of the rifle and pushing it to his chest.

"Ugh!" Alfred let out a grunt, pulling the trigger without a second hesitation. But the old man who welcomed him outside of his doorstep slapped the rifle from below with the bottom of his palm.

Three continuous shots were fired, which went through the roof. Both men engaged in close combat, with Alfred being pushed back inside. Alfred could dodge or deflect some of his visitor attacks, but another assault would come afterward. Blow after blow, a knee kick on his abdomen, a punch in his face, a roundhouse kick to his arm, Alfred lost count of how many attacks he had inflicted and blocked.

Another round of gunshots were fired once again.

"You...!" Alfred grumbled through his gritted teeth, only to get another kick to his stomach.

This time, he was pushed back and tripped over to the wooden table. His buttocks landed with a loud thud, gazing up at the old folk standing several steps from him.

"Bear Cruel," said Bear as he slowly picked up a bandage roll from his pocket, wrapping it around his knuckles. "If you’re going to ask who I am, then that’s the name. Saves you some time and breath."

His pair of silver eyes glinted as he shifted it to the young man who had shown promising strength. It was rare for anyone to keep up with Bear in terms of brute strength. Probably Tiger was the only one who could come close, but well, that was because Bear had been training Tiger since he was a young boy.

"One thing I do not like when fighting is talking," he continued, keeping the bandages around his knuckles tight. "So, if you have inquiries before you die, ask away."

Alfred snickered, assessing Bear from up and down. "Bear Cruel, huh?" he huffed, not familiar with the man’s name. However, he was very familiar with the family name, Cruel.

"Do you have any questions?"

"For what?" Alfred ground his teeth, pushing himself up until he was back on his feet. "I’m not dying tonight."

Bear glanced at the rifle still clinging across the man’s body. Seeing where he was looking, Alfred scoffed and took off the rifle. Alfred’s action made Bear’s brows knit. His gaze was following the direction where Alfred tossed it.

"You’re making a mistake," Bear remarked with genuine concern. "Pick it up."

"Hah. You think I need a gun to take you down?"

’Bless his heart, it’s totally fine, but he’s as dumb as a sack of rocks,’ thought Bear, studying Alfred from up and down. "God loves you, but boy, are you stupid."

Alfred scorned, eyes glinting malevolently. "I get that a lot."

"Did God ever send you a sign to pick up a book?" Bear asked again. "If not, then I’ll refrain from using big phrases and potentially confuse you."

"Insult me all you want, since this will be the last time you would ever get the chance."

"Alright." Bear nodded, both amazed and confused, how this guy here lasted this long in the underground. After being in this business for most of his life, he realized brute force wasn’t the only thing one needed to survive. It could last you for quite some time, though.

Bear once again studied Alfred’s stature and physique. The latter truly had huge muscles. Even during Bear’s prime, he wasn’t this big. Although he was considered the biggest in the Reapers. Hence, his alias.

"Ready, boy?" he remarked, taking off his blazer and tie.

Alfred, who shoved his hand from his pockets, wore brass knuckles. He smirked and said, "Old man, it’s been a while since someone challenged me to a fistfight. This will be fun."

"I’m not."

"What?"

"I’m not the challenger, nor do I think it will be fun." Bear’s eyes slowly turned dark as the aura he exuded grew more intimidating. "Violence doesn’t excite me, but they were necessary. So, I’ll end it quickly."

"All talk — you’re old!"

The second those words rolled out of Alfred’s tongue, he leaped toward Bear with his fist pulled back. Bear, on the other hand, stood motionless in the same spot. He said nothing, sighing deeply as he felt a little sorry for this young man.

’This is a first for me,’ he thought. ’I’m always the bigger guy and also the slow one.’

When Alfred stepped into Bear’s personal space, he swiftly dodged the incoming fist. Bear grabbed Alfred’s arm, twisting it away, and then launching a powerful jab at his side. Big wasn’t always a good thing. Because if one was big, their movements tended to be slower.

Bear had learned that a long time ago when he fought his good friend Vicenzo in the past. Hence, he knew this would be quick. And he was right.

In no time, Alfred had soon realized that his opponent might be old, but also experienced.

He never had the chance to begin with.
