Chapter 1055: Seen it and loathed it

"You..." Dane opened and closed his mouth like a fish, in disbelief at the person in the same cabin as him. "You’re dead."

Was this a mirage? A hallucination? A vengeful ghost?

Impossible.

All those things could only happen if Dane had a mental illness or was stricken with guilt. He got neither of them.

Dominic slowly lifted his sharp eyes in Dane’s direction, saying, "So was Dane Zhang." His voice was low — even harsher than his usual tone.

"No," Dane staggered back. "You’re dead. I saw you —"

Dane halted as realization struck him. His eyes slowly went wider, thinking the person he had seen die might not be Dominic. There was someone who looked exactly like Dominic. But Dane already ordered someone to kill Silas inside the prison.

"How?" he breathed out, the synapses in his brain flicking rhythmically. "Silas should have been dead."

Dominic studied Dane’s expression quietly, tilting his head a little, waiting for the latter to conclude. Dane was cunning enough to fool everyone. He could put two and two together.

"Hah..." After a full minute of silence, Dane let out a ridiculing laugh. He shifted his glinting eyes back to Dominic, sneering. "You paid my guy to give me the wrong report?"

Dominic didn’t answer, riling him even more with the silent treatment.

"You!" Dane balled his hands into a tight fist, grinding his teeth angrily. He disliked that look in Dominic’s eyes. He always loathed how this man always looked at others as if they were all below him. Dane had to suck that up for years.

"Do you think coming here makes you the winner?" he laughed maniacally. "Oh, Dominic Zhu. If you survived that attack, you should’ve stayed hidden. You had better chances if you stayed dead."

Still, Dominic didn’t answer.

"Tch." Dane huffed sharply, feeling his hip for his weapon. But alas, he figured he placed it down earlier. Glancing at the luggage, his pistol was resting on top of it.

"Go get it." After a long silence, Dominic spoke. He tipped his head in the luggage’s direction, eyes fixed on Dane. "Get your gun. If that will make you feel less scared, take it."

"Are you provoking me?"

"Am I?"

"Haha! Dominic Zhu, just because you found me, doesn’t mean you succeeded."

"Is that what you think?" Dominic casually propped his temple against his knuckles. "If that would make you feel better, then sure."

Dane clenched his teeth, controlling himself from acting out of emotion. Dominic was testing his patience and purposely hitting all the nerves he could. Dominic wanted him to lose his mind, but Dane wouldn’t give that to him.

Acting all defensive wouldn’t help Dane.

’That’s right.’ Dane mentally nodded, breathing in and out until he was calm enough to talk. ’I got to buy myself some time and find out what to do.’

"Are you here because you’re angry that I asked somebody to assassinate you? Or was it the fact that your ego was hurt because your assistant, the person you think is below you, is capable of having you killed?" Dane taunted, sneering. "I wonder which one of those?"

"Can it be both?" Dominic blinked ever so slowly. His tone was almost joking.

Dane scoffed. "Even in this situation, you still act so cocky."

"Does it irritate you?"

"Irritate me? Hah. Why would it irritate me when I can kill you right here and now?"

"Exactly my point." Dominic nodded in satisfaction. "Why would I humble myself when I can kill you right here and now?"

This time, Dane burst out of laughter. He held his stomach, hunching in. When he recovered, he looked up and smirked.

"You?" he mocked. "You will kill me?"

Dominic’s only response was an amused smirk, as if what Dane said just now proved a theory.

"Why are you laughing?" The smirk on Dane’s face faded. "Why? Did you think you really got the upper hand here?"

"Dimitri, you’ve been playing Dane Zhang’s role for many years. Even I am astounded at how dedicated you were to playing that role. But what astounds me the most is that despite all those years, you still had no idea what kind of person I could be." Dominic straightened his back, slipping his hand inside his suit to take out a flask. "But then again, while you were busy covering your tracks so none of us could find out your silly little secrets, you had no idea what I had to do after that incident involving my son."

Dominic took out a sip from his flask, smacking his lips in satisfaction. "Do you want a sip?" he offered, moving his flask forward.

"What do you want?" Dane’s expression turned grim. "I assume Bear is also here to assist you."

Dominic nodded, as that was already given. Bear was probably busy with Alfred.

"What I want, huh?" Dominic leaned back, shaking his flask as if he was swirling a glass of wine. "At first, I want to settle scores with you. I must admit that the thought that my assistant turned out to be such a powerful and wicked man is infuriating. When I look into it more, it makes me even more furious that while I thought I was doing a great charity, you’ve been plucking out your goods from all those places."

"On top of that, my children, my family, see you as a family member," he continued in a knowing tone. "At first, I thought, the truth would only hurt them more than it had hurt me. Therefore, you must pay for this great deception. And also, for my peace of mind, since you had access to my family. I can’t risk it."

Dominic paused, assessing the man from up and down. "But then, I realized you’re not worth it. The insult you’ve brought upon me might be unacceptable, but I didn’t need to do anything for you to meet your demise. You’ve already dug a grave for yourself, Dimitri, and thus, you took Dane Zhang’s identity as a preparation in case you need to flee."

"Flee? You think I plan to flee like a coward?"

"Dane Zhang... I kept thinking about why you chose me. Of all the people you can work for, why me? And then it hit me," Dominic added, ignoring the argument from the other party. "Because Dominic Zhu is a perfect wall to hide from. You might not be the man in control nor the person who calls the shot, but being Dane Zhang gives you enough power, freedom, and access to do your bidding."

He cast him a knowing look. "It was a perfect disguise... but my wife is simply amazing that she didn’t buy your fake loyalty. Do you know why, Dimitri?" he tilted his head a little to the side before he continued;

"Because she knew what true loyalty means. She had seen it... and loathed it. Thus, she knew loyalty at first sight. She didn’t see that in you."
