Chapter 1054: Looking it the wrong way

Chapter 1054: Looking it the wrong way

Dane rubbed his thumb against the side of his index, deep in thought. There were many things he should be thinking about, countless things that could save him trouble in the future. But alas, when Romnick left, along with the majority of his group, he couldn’t get rid of a question.

What does Hera Cruel want from him?

He could close the mystery as simply as an act of revenge for fueling Dragon’s obsession over her. After all, Dragon wouldn’t go so far if not for his help. He had given the man all the resources he needed. Although Dragon was clever enough to triple the resources and connections their organization had, the fact he had given Dragon the ammo was enough to inflict Hera’s wrath.

Yet, he felt something was amiss.

One of them was how fast the members of the Reapers switched sides. More specifically, the members who worked for Dominic. From what he heard, only Bear remained on Dominic’s side. He confirmed this during the inauguration.

Why now?

That was the question he couldn’t answer all on his own. Dane dwelled on this question not just out of pure curiosity, but a gut feeling. His instinct told him if he cracked this mystery, it’d give him an upper hand.

It was strange that all those guys who acted and put their lives on the line while working for the Zhu’s suddenly left the family. It wasn’t like they didn’t know Hera was alive. Matter of fact, they knew for a long time that Hera Cruel was alive. Yet, they stayed with Dominic despite their original master’s grave situation.

"That’s right," Dane murmured. "There’s a high chance Dominic could’ve lived if only they were with him. But those guys who claimed loyalty..."

Dane squinted his eyes as he trailed off. "No," he whispered, shaking his head mildly. "I’m looking at it the wrong way."

Dane worked for Dominic for a long time. Therefore, he could safely say those guys were only working for Dominic for the money. But somehow, something changed. Dominic started trusting them more, and they also started looking more into Dominic’s business. Dane never figured that out in the past while working as Dominic’s assistant because he was too busy covering his tracks. He didn’t want Bear or even Tiger to grow suspicious of him.

"Heaven Liu." His lips parted, realizing he had been missing one part of the picture. "Right. That bitch... is the only one who never fully trust me."

Dane was able to get Tiger and Bear’s trust while they were working closely together. But he also had many chances to get close to Heaven, but the woman was obviously not welcoming. She never said it, nor had she made him feel she knew something, but he knew Heaven was keeping her eyes on him.

"Now that I think about it... those guys are more rather close with Heaven Liu than Dominic," he realized, rummaging through the memory lane to get any hints. "And she’s also the reason why those guys hadn’t done anything, even after knowing Hera Cruel is alive."

He narrowed his eyes even more as his expression turned solemn. Everything around him felt quiet, delving deep into the matter. He recalled everything he could — big or small details — regarding the Reapers and Heaven Liu. Those times, they were up against Primo, Silas, and then Dragon.

Something changed along the process.

When?

How?

What was the cause of it?

Myriads of more questions hovered over Dane’s mind, trying to get some clues from his memories. But just as he felt like he was close to figuring it out, a knock came through the window. He almost jolted, snapping his eyes to the window.

Dane rolled down the window, watching Alfred bend down.

"Boss, we’re here. The area’s clear."

"Uh." Dane blinked, looking around the fields surrounding the area. "I see."

He shook his head, throwing his thoughts at the back of his head. He had been thinking about one matter he didn’t realize they had already arrived at their destination. Dane huffed and tugged the hem of his shirt, stepping out of the backseat while Alfred opened it for him.

"We’ll stay here for the night," said Alfred. "And then we’ll move again before dawn breaks."

Dane glanced at Alfred and snickered before setting his eyes on the small cabin house in the middle of the rural field. When he snapped his tongue, he cast Alfred another look.

"Don’t bother me for the night. Unless it’s something important, don’t even think about it."

"Yes." Alfred nodded, jogging to the trunk to get some baggage Dane needed. He carried the baggage to the entrance, only to stop when Dane put a hand on his shoulder.

"Keep them there," said Dane. "I’ll take them from here."

Deep lines appeared between Alfred’s brows but didn’t question it. "Alright. The men are already surveying the area, so I’ll be in the warehouse," he said before he turned his back, heading to the small warehouse in the area.

Dane kept his eyes on Alfred, and then at the luggages on the ground. Opening the door first, he carried the luggage inside. The cabin was dark and not a single source of light was on. He could only rely on the faint glow of the moon to navigate his way in.

"Smells like some old rotten men live in here," he commented, waving in front of him to shoo the smell.

When he placed the luggage in the corner, he looked around to find the switch. Soon, he caught a handful size lever switches hanging down from the pillar. He marched towards it, casually grabbing it, and then switched it on.

Click.

Dane squinted his eyes on instinct as a cozy, warm light spread across the entire cabin. But when he slowly opened his eyes, he instantly saw a figure sitting in a chair from the corner of his eyes. His breath hitched as his irises went wide. Slowly, he turned his head to look at the person waiting for him inside this cabin.

Dominic Zhu.
