Chapter 1053: New order
Meanwhile...
"Those damn reapers!" Dane growled, punching the inside of the backseat door like a maniac. "I’m going to kill all of them. All of them!"
He was panting and grinding his teeth, his chest heaving in and out heavily. The corner of his eyes sharpened, laughing evilly through his gritted teeth.
"That’s it," he breathed out. "They want to die so bad? Fine. I’ll send them all to hell where they belong to rot."
Another wave of laughter echoed in the car, making Romnick and Alfred in the front passenger seat look at each other. Right now, they were heading to another hideout after hearing about the situation at the port. Dane’s plan was perfect. They almost succeeded in securing the shipments and taking down the headache of the Interpol, Elliot Dunkel.
But alas, the Reapers just happened to have a more crazy idea to spoil their plans.
It wasn’t like Dane didn’t expect the Reapers’ presence in the port. Matter of fact, they considered that fact in their plans. After all, the ones who sabotaged the shipment were the Reapers. But alas, despite their great consideration, it was still not enough to stop them.
"Boss, I already ordered our men to pull back." Romnick cleared his throat, thinking he had to say that in case Dane didn’t hear him for the first time. "There’s nothing they can do. So, those who were left unharmed or stationed around the port are probably headed back."
"Tch." Dane clicked his tongue, glaring daggers at the front passenger seat. "Retreat? Why are they retreating? I send more than half of our forces in the country to that place. They should be able to take down those damn rats!"
"Boss, I don’t think we’d ever get the shipments." This time, Alfred spoke his thoughts aloud.
Romnick nodded. "I agree with him. If we continue, our losses will be far too great than our gain."
Dane darted his eyes between the driver’s seat and the front passenger seat, scoffing in ridicule.
"Our losses will be greater than our gain?" he repeated mockingly. "Do you even hear yourself?"
Alfred and Romnick’s expression turned grim at the response they got from Dane. If this was before, Dane would agree with them. After all, Dane always kept himself calm because he knew he had to make rational decisions. But because of the Reapers’ activities and all the pressure about the shipments, Dane was slowly losing control of his emotions.
"If those shipments didn’t land to their rightful owners, do you have any idea who would come for your heads and mine?" Dane hissed. "Not only the Russian Mafia will send out their ghosts but also people, even Hera Cruel wouldn’t cross."
Deep lines appeared between Romnick’s forehead, looking over his shoulder. Their organization’s operation ran differently than the rest. However, although there was secrecy in their clientele, they mostly knew about them. Dane was away for a long time and thus, those who were left behind had to run the business.
Dragon was the face of the business, but every one of the underbosses had their roles in the operation. In other words, aside from the organized giant mobs, they couldn’t think of anyone who could bring forth such a reaction from Dane.
"Those shipments were just as important as our lives," Dane breathed out, stressing each syllable to get his point across. "And so was Elliot Dunkel’s death."
Romnick assessed his boss’s fiery expression, realizing Dane wasn’t just simply losing his calm. Dane was perfectly rational, albeit furious about the situation.
"I’ll see what I can do," said Romnick, nodding at his boss before setting his eyes to the driver’s seat. "Pull over. I’ll check the port and find ways to retrieve the shipments."
"But you can’t go alone."
"I’ll meet the guys who were able to get away before the chaos."
"Bring some men with you," Dane suggested, earning a look from Alfred through the rearview mirror while Romnick looked back. "As long as you can get those shipments back, I don’t care how you’d do it."
"But Boss, if you send out the rest of our men to assist him, that means lowering your guards," Alfred expressed. "Romnick can gather the rest of our men —"
"Shut up." Dane snapped at Alfred. "You’re stupid, Alfred. You are not meant to use your numb brain."
Alfred instantly shut up, tightening his jaw as he clenched his teeth.
"Take our men with you," Dane continued, shifting his attention to Romnick. "I am not as fragile as a vase that would shatter if I lose a few men around me. I can fight for my survival, and Alfred will stay with me. Don’t you dare say you’re worried about me because I know you’re only worried that once I fall, all of you will die as well."
Romnick wasn’t given a chance to persuade his boss to keep his security as tight. All he could do for a moment was stare at Dane and then nod. They already lost quite a few important people in the course of a short time. They couldn’t afford to lose more.
"I understand," he remarked quietly. "I’ll take the men with me."
Dane nodded in satisfaction as he leaned back. "Good," he breathed out. "Make sure you either get the shipments or kill Elliot Dunkel. Nevermind. Kill Elliot Dunkel. That’s much easier than retrieving the goods. We can do that later."
"Why him?"
"Because he knows too much and his position poses a threat to some individuals." Dane rocked his head before he suddenly went quiet. A snicker escaped him as he calmed down, sorting his thoughts the more calm he felt.
"Hah. That’s right," he muttered. "I can blame Hera Cruel once our clients asked about the shipments. As far as I know, they had their grudges against the Reapers. It’s a good way to take down the Cruels without exhausting all our resources.
"Haha! How did I not think of that?" he continued, laughing maniacally. "There’s no need to be so worked up about the shipments. Hera Cruel... you are so dead."
Romnick raised his brows as he scrutinized the look on Dane’s face. By the looks of it, Dane managed to gather his thoughts, which eased his worries. He then cast Alfred a look, nodding at him as if signaling Alfred there was nothing to worry about their boss.
With that being said, Alfred slowly pulled over and so were the escort cars following them. Romnick hitched outside, instructing their men about the new orders. And in a short period of time, only two cars — including the one Dane was in — drove to their next destination while the rest went to execute the order.
Kill Elliot Dunkel.
