Chapter 1052: Lunch money
Chapter 1052: Lunch money
"Any last words?"
That question sounded like a chain everyone heard locking. It sounded just as deadly as a death sentence. Everyone who had been working for Ram could only look at Hera and Ram with wide eyes. They held their breaths, knowing Hera Cruel wouldn’t change her mind.
Much to everyone’s dismay, instead of fear, a peaceful smile slowly dominated Ram’s face. His eyes softened, a rare expression that ever appeared on his face.
"It’s an honor to die in your hands, Hera."
Ram’s voice was quiet and gentle, keeping his attention to Hera. If not for that look on his face, they would think this was a trick. But by the looks of it, he already accepted his end. And he was just pleased the person who would take his life was Hera, not anyone or anything else.
Hera didn’t even blink at his remarks. She watched him look at her affectionately, welcoming the bullet with open eyes. It was as though he would rather see her face a little longer than close his eyes, never to open them again.
"Hah," Hera smirked, and without a second hesitation, she pulled the trigger.
BANG!
Everyone’s breath hitched, and time seemed to stop for a moment. They didn’t even blink, hearts dropping to their stomach alongside the deafening shot. Silence ensued, only that remained were the fading echoes of the gunfire.
When they realized Ram was still standing, they instinctively turned their heads in Hera’s direction. There, holding the pistol in Ram’s direction, thin smoke billowed from the muzzle.
"There’s never an honor in death, Ram," Hera remarked quietly, holding Ram’s gaze. "I must admit I’m impressed. You didn’t even blink when I pulled the trigger."
"You just grazed me," he said, wiping the minor scratch on his cheekbones. "Why didn’t you shoot me?"
Ram raised his chin, not welcoming any silly ideas that she wouldn’t kill him. Knowing her, there was always a reason for her to miss a shot. It didn’t mean she already forgave him and his decisions, no matter what intentions he may have.
"Because you made one right decision," Hera remarked. "One good decision... that I can overlook everything you have done so far."
Deep lines appeared between his brows, confused. Ram may have made many big decisions recently, but he couldn’t remember any decision that would make Hera forgive him so easily. Was it his affiliation with the Interpol? Or the fact he managed to uncover more details of her mother’s death? But that was impossible. Even if Hunter luckily entered Hera’s protection, that man knew nothing. Matter of fact, everything that Ram knew was information he never shared with anyone.
In other words, there was no way Hera could’ve figured out what he had learned during her coma and her memory loss.
"Dominic Zhu." After a minute of pure silence, Hera spoke again. "Ram, is that man here?"
Dominic?
Ram furrowed his brows, eyes swirling with curiosity. "He’s dead."
"No, he isn’t."
Ram paused again but quickly accepted she knew Dominic wasn’t dead. "Why do you want to know?"
"And you ask questions now too?"
"Hera."
"Is he here?"
"Dominic Zhu has nothing to do with what had happened to you."
"Answer me."
Ram clenched his teeth, getting a little nervous about her intention. He didn’t know how or when Hera and Dominic knew each other. However, if he thought about Dominic’s action and the look in Hera’s eyes, he could tell these two shouldn’t cross paths.
Was it betrayal? Was Dominic a secret client in the past? And Bear actually betrayed Hera? Was it the reason Bear was working for Dominic now? Myriads of thoughts surged in Ram’s head; the thoughts he tried not to entertain in the past resurfaced in his head all at once. However, he shut his eyes and drew a deep breath.
Whatever business Dominic and Hera had for each other, Ram realized this matter wasn’t something he should meddle with. This situation was for him to prove he always had her best interest in mind.
"Before I answer your question, may I ask you something?" he queried, only to get no reaction from her. "Will you kill him?"
"Kill?" Hera laughed in ridicule. "No, Ram. He’s my type. Why would I kill him?."
She said that with certainty and without a second hesitation. And yet, Ram knew killing Dominic might be an act of mercy. She could also mean she wouldn’t kill him until she pushed him to the edge that he would kill himself.
"No." Ram cleared his throat as he took a deep breath. "If you’re asking if he’s in the area, then the answer is no. He’s not in here. However, he’s in the country with Bernard."
"Where?"
Ram pressed his lips. "I don’t know."
"Don’t lie to me."
"I’m not lying with you, Hera. Dominic and I don’t trust each other that much to give out our whereabouts. But if my suspicion is correct, he had probably gone to where Dimitri was."
"Where is Dimitri?"
"Ask his people in the port. They probably know. Following Dimitri isn’t my goal. My only interest is Dragon and some people you may know. But you already dealt with him. I only helped Dominic because one way or another, Dimitri can be a problem in the future."
"He is a problem now, so he’s going to be a problem in the future.." Hera ran her tongue across her inner cheeks. "You didn’t get him followed?"
"With Bear on his side? That’s a lot of hope, Hera." Ram shook his head. "But I can give you a list of properties where Dimitri could’ve hidden."
Ram cast his assistant a look and nodded at him. The latter lowered his head slightly, marching back to the car to get a document. The assistant approached Hera with discretion, noticing the red light dots on his head multiplied by ten.
"Take that," said Ram as soon as his assistant stepped into Hera’s vicinity. "It might be helpful. Or if you want, we can take you there."
"No need." Hera snatched the file from the assistant, looking at it briefly. "This is enough."
With that being said, Hera turned on her heel and rode her motorbike.
"Wait!" Ram called. "We can assist you."
"I said no need," Hera said, holding her helmet as she looked back at him. "Go to the port and help Dunkel sort our deliveries. Also, tell Dunkel to hurry back. I’ll kill him if the goods I entrusted him go missing."
With that being said, Hera put on her helmet and revved up the motorbike. But before she went, she gazed down at the meter gauge, specifically the fuel meter.
"By the way." Hera turned to Ram once more. "Do you have some cash?"
"Huh?"
"I’m broke, Ram. It’s not even a stretch to say the homeless have more money than me," she explained sarcastically. "I need gas money."
Ram blinked in confusion, almost blaming his ears for hearing strange things from her mouth. However, despite the confusion, he took out his wallet and took out the cash that he used to buy himself a bowl of ramen. He rarely brought cash with him and all of those were to buy one bowl of ramen.
"You," Ram called his assistant. "I mean everyone, bring out all the cash you have and give it to her. I only have five hundred yen with me."
Confused, everyone still listened to their boss. They took out their wallets and took out the little cash they had. The assistant efficiently collected everyone’s money, overly confused about the situation. It felt like giving their lunch money to a bully.
"He — here, it is." The assistant stuttered as he handed all the cash to her.
Hera received it and despite the helmet around her head, he could see the dismay in her eyes. "All of you... this is all you got? How do you even live?"
She didn’t even have a penny! How could someone who was more broke than a beggar complain?
"I almost feel bad, but not bad enough not to accept it," she remarked as she shamelessly shoved the cash in her jacket. "Whatever. Ram, I’ll keep in touch. Do something stupid again, and I’ll see to it you’ll eat your own toe."
Hera shook her head and pulled down her visor before speeding away as if nothing happened. Everyone, including Ram, could only watch the motorbike speed away so shamelessly.
"That was an unexpected turn of events," Ram murmured as the ending was the least he expected from her. "How come she’s broke?"
His brows rose as he caught the red light dots on their head disappear when Hera disappeared from their line of sight. He looked around once but didn’t wonder where the Reapers were. All he could think of was what Hera told him to do.
"Let’s go to the port," he said as he turned and opened the backseat. "Elliot might be in trouble."
"Yes, sir!"
Everyone answered in unison, but before going inside their cars, they couldn’t help but look at each other. They didn’t know if they should believe their encounter with Hera was even real. However, with some of them still holding their empty wallets, it was proof it had happened.
She did ask for money.
