Chapter 1038: Ten seasons

"We don’t have so much time," Gray remarked as he peeked through the door, checking if there was anyone outside. When she made sure no one was coming, he closed it carefully and locked it. He turned his head to the crib.

Standing beside the crib was Hera, looking down at the beautiful and chubby baby in it. Soft giggles echoed in the playroom as Miracle reached for the person standing by her crib.

"She’s not crying," Hera whispered, erecting her index to let Miracle hold it. "And she also has a very strong grip."

The panic swelling up in Gray’s heart slowly disappeared, watching Hera play with her daughter. He sighed deeply, leaning his back against the door. When Hera and Sebastian parted, Gray followed her to the fire exit. He wasn’t surprised when she suddenly asked him for a favor. In fact, he sort of expected that she would ask him to help her see Miracle.

Which explained the situation.

Gray distracted Miriam, telling her there was something Axel wanted her to do, and volunteered to look after Miracle. Hera snuck in when Miriam left.

"My Miracle," Hera whispered lovingly. "Did she gain more weight?"

Her eyes softened even more at the adorable big bun holding her finger. She was so cute and as white as snow.

"I will see you grow up, Miracle," she promised quietly. "Mommy will ensure you and your brother will have a life... just like everybody else. A normal one where you can be as free as a bird, fail as many times as you can and learn as much from them. A life without fear, without hate, and danger."

The side of her lips curled up, caressing Miracle’s plumped cheeks with her index. "Mommy loves you and your brother so much, Miracle. You were my world and you will always be." She nodded at her, chuckling as Miracle tried to put her finger into her mouth.

"Take care of her, Gray," she added while keeping her attention on Miracle. "Even if you have to die for her and Basti, protect them at all costs."

Gray lowered his head, balling his hands into tight fists. "It’s an S-Rank mission. If that isn’t enough to reassure you, then we genuinely care for these children."

"Once I leave this place, I will be gone for a very long time," she added in a voice above a whisper. "I’ll be sending everyone to hell. Do you understand what I’m trying to say?"

"I know." Gray clenched his teeth. "I think I already had an idea when I heard about you and Heaven."

Hera smiled subtly, engraving Miracle’s face so she wouldn’t forget. "Don’t contact me and watch Basti from finding ways to reach me. My son is a genius; he’ll find ways to reach me."

"Basti doesn’t know about you."

"That’s also what I hoped for." Hera caressed Miracle’s head which was covered with thin and soft hairs. "But in any case, just do what I say."

"Yes."

"Everyone’s eyes would be on me," she continued. "They will be watching everything that I do, every move, even my breathing. I don’t want those eyes veering in my children’s direction."

"Like I said, you don’t have to tell me." Gray frowned, holding himself back from arguing with her. "They will be safe. As long as you don’t come in here and show up, no one will know about them."

"Not unless Dominic is involved."

Gray’s breath hitched, still keeping his eyes on her. But Hera never once looked in his way. She kept her gaze on Miracle as if she didn’t want to waste even a millisecond.

"Do you now understand?" she uttered. "That’s what I am so worried about."

"Dominic is dead."

"And I hope he stays dead."

Gray drew a deep breath and breathed it out through his mouth. He closed his eyes, nodding in understanding.

"I got it," he said. "I’ll make sure he stays dead for as long as he wants."

Hera smiled, bending over the crib. She planted a kiss on Miracle’s forehead, eyes closed, inhaling the natural baby scent on Miracle. When she drew her head back a little, she smiled lovingly.

"I love you, my Miracle," she whispered one more time, raising her brows when Miracle grabbed some of her stray hairs. "Ouchie."

Miracle giggled and pulled her hair, plunking out a few stands of hair.

"Don’t eat it," Hera carefully held Miracle’s hand, taking the strands of hair away before her daughter could eat it.

She missed this.

Hera missed the days she would have to stay at home with her children. She missed those menial and chaotic days when she would cook for them, feed them, take care of them, and complain to Dominic at night about her body aches. If only she knew this day would come, she would’ve appreciated those days more.

If only she knew, she wouldn’t have done anything else other than spend day and night with them. Now that she was looking back at those ten seasons, how little and short yet fast those days were.

When she got the strand of hair from Miracle’s grip, Hera placed it in the pockets of her jacket. She smiled one more time before straightening her back. This time, Hera faced Gray squarely.

"I am fine, Gray," she reassured as soon as she caught the bitterness in his eyes. "I’ll be."

A thin layer of tears coated Gray’s eyes. "Don’t die," he breathed out.

"I won’t." She nodded reassuringly. "I’ll contact you again in the future."

Gray pressed his lips into a thin line, casting his eyes down again. A sharp exhale slipped past Hera’s nostrils, marching in his direction. She planted a hand on his shoulder, squeezing it.

"See you around, Gray," she whispered before turning around, and heading to the connecting door where she came from. But just as she reached for the knob, she stopped.

"*hic*" Miracle let out an irritated whimper. "Wahh!"

"Miri!" Gray sniffed and wiped his eyes, rushing to the crib to soothe Miracle. Carrying the big baby in his arms, he looked at Hera.

Hera was already looking back at them, eyes on Miracle. Her expression cracked, but she didn’t say anything. However, she didn’t need to say anything to him to see the reluctance in her eyes. Hera forced herself to turn her back with a heavy heart, eyes closed, as she walked through the connecting door.
