Chapter 1039: This book as my witness

Chapter 1039: This book as my witness

Primo listened to country music as he waited for Hera in the car. He tapped his finger against the steering wheel, rocking his head along with the beat. When he heard the backseat open, he snapped his brows up and glanced through the rear mirror.

"Ready to go?" he asked Hera.

Hera closed her eyes and drew a deep breath. She didn’t respond to him, gazing down at the book beside her and the pacifier she took from Miracle’s crib in her hand. She raised her head, turning it to the villa where her children were staying at the moment.

"Just a minute," she murmured, staring at the house. "Give me a moment."

Primo nodded in understanding, checking his wristwatch. He didn’t say anything anymore, knowing this was what she needed right now. Just a moment. A moment to breathe, to gather her thoughts, and to wrap her heart with steel.

Hera stared at the house with soft eyes, smiling subtly. Primo, on the other hand, kept his eyes on the rearview mirror. It was almost strange to see her wear such a look. After watching her for a while now, one would believe Hera had no heart at all. If he was still her enemy, this would shock him. But then again, she had always been like this. At least, he knew that much when she was still in Heaven’s body.

He lost an arm as a lesson, after all.

Primo kept his eyes on the rearview mirror, watching her carefully. When Hera closed her eyes once more and drew another deep breath, he saw everything disappear when she reopened her eyes. The softness and gentleness, the affection and longing, all gone. What was left in her eyes was nothing but the demoness everyone feared.

"Let’s go," Hera ordered, setting her eyes on the driver’s seat. "Let’s pick up Tiger and leave this place."

"Yes, ma’am!" Primo raised his brows briefly, whistling at the remarkable change that exuded in her tone. "God, you’re scary."

"Ah... she’s really a strong, independent woman," Tiger murmured, watching Ivy work tirelessly from the rooftop of a building with binoculars. "Did she move on?"

He slowly pulled away from the binocular, furrowing his brows as he cocked his head. "That’s unfair," he frowned, but then, he couldn’t go to her and ask that question in person.

"Tch. I shouldn’t have gone here." He clicked his tongue, shaking his head, feeling a vibration in his chest. "Time’s up."

Tiger shoved his hand inside his pocket and checked the time. Seeing that his "visitation time" was over, he leisurely turned around and left the building. He had a strong urge to peek at the binoculars one last time but stopped himself.

It was better this way.

Watching Ivy more would sabotage all of his and everyone’s efforts. As cynical and cruel as it sounded, the thought that Hera had it worse made him feel better. If she could stop herself, he could do it too. When Tiger reached the ground floor and to the entrance, he caught an SUV pulling over to the side.

"She made it in time," he muttered to himself, jumping into the front passenger seat. "I didn’t do anything, even if I wanted to."

Tiger turned to the backseat, telling her about his achievement. "Be proud."

"So proud of you," Hera remarked emotionlessly. "Let’s go."

"That’s all?" Tiger scrunched up his nose.

"What were you expecting? She would jump in joy? A pat on the back?" Primo commented sarcastically, maneuvering the car back on the road. "She has to leave her children behind while you only have to exercise abstinence."

Tiger squinted his eyes at Primo, shaking his hand with his index pointed at Primo. "You... do you want another prosthetic?"

"Hera, look at him. He’s threatening me!"

"Oh, come on! What are you? A child?" Tiger gasped in disbelief, looking back at Hera. "Hera, don’t spoil this brat. I’m telling you."

"Don’t pick on him, Tiger."

"Hehe."

"Tch." Tiger snapped his tongue in irritation, glaring daggers at the devious Primo. "Why can’t my life be so simple? Why do I always get partnered up with dudes like you?"

"I’m still much better than Moose’s."

Tiger opened his mouth but then shut them closed. He rocked his head in agreement. Every time Tiger gets partnered with Moose, his every move and every step costs something. Moose always ripped off everyone except Hera.

"So?" Primo cleared his throat, shifting his gaze to the rearview mirror. "Where do we go now? Flying back?"

"Port," Tiger answered nonchalantly, earning a quick look from Primo. "Aside from the heart-wrenching business we have here, there’s also one. Dimitri has people in this place. That guy is fucking doomed."

"Ahh..."

"Bear already took down their hideout in the city. You should remember them, No One," said Hera, keeping the pacifier in her jacket while holding a book on her lap. "The Scorpion Gang."

"Those bastards," Primo clicked his tongue, but not surprised at every development of this twisted story. Everything was twisted from the get-go. So what if his previous alliance was actually under Dane? Dane was twisted, just like his cousin, Mr. John.

"From what I heard, their operation is being done in the port," she continued quietly, eyes glinting with murderous intent. "Dane or Dimitri... even if he calls himself a fucking dog, I’m going to break him limb by limb. How dare he attempt to publicly execute my husband?"

Primo glanced at the rearview mirror. "Now that I think about it, shouldn’t we worry about Heaven’s well-being? Dimitri knew how troublesome you were. The problem is, he knew you as Heaven Liu, not Hera Cruel."

"Don’t worry about that." Tiger reached for Primo’s shoulder, tapping it reassuringly. "He would soon forget about Heaven Liu completely once he finds out who is after his ass."

Primo cast him a sidelong glance, shrugging nonchalantly. He trusted Hera, but more than that, he understood Tiger’s remark very well. As someone who used to have his wicked group in the underground, earning Hera’s attention was akin to a death sentence.

She was feared for a reason.

And she didn’t need to prove that to anyone. Her actions already spoke louder than any gloating or bragging.

"This book is our witness..." Hera sat on the edge of the desk, looking at the man beside her, who was seated behind the desk. She held his hand down, his palm on top of the book she carried with her. "... I promise you swift release if you tell me where Dimitri is and‌ summon every last member of your gang."

The man, whose face was swollen and was already covered in blood, shuddered. He looked up at the woman, and then at the two other guys smoking leisurely in the room after taking down everyone — EVERYONE — stationed in the fort.

"I would never break any promises I’ll make in this book." She lowered her head. "Now, speak."

The man whimpered. His body ached everywhere, but his growing fear of who this person said she was made his pain pale in comparison.

"I don’t know," he forced his words out. "I swear! Please!"

Hera arched a brow, making him panic.

"But I got contact with him!" he exclaimed. "He never gives his location. All I do is distribute the goods or ship out the goods. The only time he reaches out is whenever there’s a transaction!"

"When’s the next delivery?"

"Tonight! Someone will come to check the goods before it gets shipped out. He works directly for Dimitri!" The man gulped. "I’m just a middleman! Please don’t kill me."

Hera’s eyelids narrowed. "Call for your gang. If your goods have more than just arms and drugs, you’ll be diving into a pool of acid. That, I promise you too."
