Chapter 1019: What’s next
Today was a long night or day for everyone. Wolf grunted as he slowly regained consciousness. His eyes flickered underneath his eyelids before they snapped open, jolting as he realized he had fallen asleep on their way to their destination.
Fortunately, when he woke up, he wasn’t tied or held captive in an unknown place, as expected. He was still in the backseat while Victor and Tracy were in the front.
"Good morning, Wolf," Tracy greeted without looking back at him. "I’m a little concerned about your health. You snore very loudly."
Wolf furrowed his brows. The last thing he could remember was they were entering a ferry with their car. "Where are we?"
"Almost there," answered Victor. "Look."
Wolf slowly set his eyes on the window, seeing some small houses on the side of the road. It was almost dawn. He squinted his eyes until he recognized the familiarity of the road. It had been many years since he stepped foot in this place.
Hera’s territory.
"Are you believing us now?" Tracy humored, glancing over her shoulder.
"I fell asleep, so I guess I believed you before that."
"True." Tracy rocked her head. "I’ve never been to this place before."
"What?"
"We told you," Victor chimed in. "Did you forget? We got our first mission without stepping foot into the base. I’m sure it’s not only us but also everyone in the secret files she kept for herself."
"I heard a lot already made their way here," Tracy added. "Considering we took the ferry, we’ll probably be the last one. We should’ve taken a chopper if not for the fact we were within the Interpol’s territory."
"Did you hear anything from her?" Wolf asked out of plain curiosity.
"Nope." Tracy shook her head. "The only thing we know is that we must go home."
"Did it occur to you it might be someone else?" Wolf returned. "For instance, it could be Dragon or Ram."
"It did." Victor rocked his head. "But then again, you don’t even know about us. You don’t even have any idea. What makes you think they know more than you?"
"But Ram knew..." Wolf trailed off as he pondered. "Never mind."
He realized Ram couldn’t know everything. Knowing the old fellow, he would’ve made his move if he knew more than expected. But alas, Ram was treading extra carefully. It only showed Ram knew bits and pieces of the puzzle, but not the entire picture.
"Just relax," said Tracy as she leaned back. "We’re almost there. I just hope I got a clean room where I can sleep for a few hours."
Wolf darted his eyes to the front, wondering if these two had been awake since they got him out of that van. It wouldn’t be a surprise if they did. They weren’t safe enough to sleep.
Silence slowly dawned in the private car as neither of them talked. Wolf could see Victor yawning and then the latter would shake his head awake. Tracy was still awake, but quiet.
"Do you want me to drive?" Wolf offered. "I already know this place. I know where are we heading."
"It’s alright." Victor smiled. "We’re almost there, so I can hang on."
"Are you sure?"
Tracy chuckled, looking back at the back seat. "Victor and I take our ranks seriously. We may have been given a special mission, but we still respect that your position in the group is higher than ours."
"Call it something we learned as detectives." Victor shrugged. "But we’re more comfortable knowing our place and others. We aren’t part of the core."
Wolf rocked his head, not pushing his offer to them. After all, it was the rule in their group. Although everyone respected one another, crossing the core was akin to crossing the big boss, Hera. And crossing the soldiers was akin to crossing the underbosses. That was the silent rule.
"It’s not like I mind," Wolf muttered, setting his eyes on the window. "It’s been a while since I was in here."
"You’ve never been in here since your employment in the CIA?"
"No." He shook his head. "You know why more than anyone."
Another moment of silence descended on the vehicle as neither of them talked. Wolf kept his eyes fixed on the window, snapping his eyes up when he caught a chopper from a distance.
"Who do you think that is?" Tracy wondered, seeing the chopper heading in the same direction.
"I don’t have any idea." Wolf shrugged. "But whoever that is, I’m sure they got the message as you."
Victor smiled. "It really is happening, huh?"
"It is." Tracy chuckled shortly. "The disbanded Reapers... are all going home."
"It is almost nostalgic," Wolf added quietly. "The question is... what’s next?"
Silence reigned over them once more. Ever since Hera sent out her people all across the globe — new members like Tracy and Victor or old members like Wolf and Ram — this place was never been the same. Or rather, they spent so much time outside of this island that it felt like coming back to their childhood home.
The rest of the trip was spent in silence as neither of them talked anymore. All they could do was stare at the road, rocky or not, and remember all the memories they had in this place. The place might have brought them a sense of nostalgia, but also, myriads of questions.
What next?
Once they reach their destination, what would happen?
’What about her life as Heaven?’Wolf wondered, staring at the side road quietly. ’If she’s back in her old body, what about Dominic and her children?’
Aside from Hera’s existing problem as Hera Cruel, Wolf was aware she had a bigger problem on her hands. For instance, the family she left behind as Heaven Liu. Hera might’ve not changed despite being in another person’s body, but everyone was aware she loved her children more than life.
He had a hunch before everything went down, and that hunch came to life.
’What’s your plan now, boss?’ he wondered, his jaw tightening as he clasped his hands tighter. ’What are we going to do now?’
