Chapter 27: Silencer

Lukas got out the steaks he bought, marinated them, while he prepared his frying pan.

He heated the frying pan up, put in some oil and then a piece of butter.

When the frying pan got heated up, he spread the butter across the pan as it melted.

Sizzle.

The oil sizzled when he put in the steak.

Instantly his tiny dark room was filled with the aroma of the steak.

After the steak was medium rare, he activated his SSS Level Summoner ability.

An orange glow appeared in the room and when the glow dissipated, Shiba appeared.

Shiba turned its head from left to right as it looked at the unfamiliar surroundings.

It stopped when Shiba had a sniff of air.

Shiba jumped excitedly as it tried to find out where the aroma was coming from.

Lukas got the steak out of the frying pan and put it onto a plate.

He squatted down and placed the plate in front of Shiba.

"Here you go. Take your time and eat. You are safe here and no one is going to snatch away your food."

Lukas said as he patted Shiba’s head.

Shiba nodded and then turned its focus onto the steak.

It opened its huge mouth and, in a swoop, swallowed the steak and the plate.

"Wait..." Lukas tried to stop Shiba from swallowing the plate.

He was worried that it might hurt Shiba.

Burp.

However, Shiba just gave out a loud burp after swallowing the steak.

Lukas shook his head and said, "These plates cost money."

He continued to make more steaks for Shiba, and the steaks were taken care of by Shiba very quickly.

Lukas frowned at the rate Shiba was going.

His earnings for the day suddenly seemed so little.

Got to keep it up and get more demonic beast cores to exchange for money at the Awakened Center, Lukas thought silently to himself.

Finally, he whipped up a meal for himself.

As he ate, Shiba had found a cozy corner with a stack of old cloths and laid onto it.

Lukas smiled at Shiba and said, "If you like it, that’s your bed from now on."

Shiba nodded and snuggled into the stack of cloths.

He glanced at Shiba and felt for the first time, a sense of home in this tiny dark room.

After finishing his meal, Lukas washed up and rested for the day.

Next day.

Lukas woke up and after a quick breakfast he went over to the Awakened Center.

This time he had his duck cap and face mask on again.

The Awakened Center was filled with all the awakened teams as usual.

This time they were gathered outside a training room, shouting and cheering on whoever was inside.

"Hi, Mandy. I’m here to exchange the demonic beast cores I got for rewards." Lukas walked up to the counter and said.

Mandy took a moment to recognize Lukas’s voice.

Her eyes widened and before she could say something, Lukas held up his finger against his lip.

Gesturing for her to let him keep a low profile.

She got his cue and nodded.

"Follow me." She said and led Lukas to a room that had the same looking device at the checkpoint.

"What’s all the commotion about outside?" Lukas said as he took out the demonic beast cores one after another.

Mandy couldn’t believe what she was seeing, as she counted the demonic beast cores one after another.

She had expected Lukas to come back with one or two, and at most three demonic beast cores.

But right in front of her were undeniably eight demonic beast cores.

"Mandy? Are you all right?" Lukas asked as he saw Mandy in a daze.

"Oh. I’m fine." She started to place the demonic beast cores onto the device to test for their authenticity.

As the machine whirred, Mandy explained what was happening outside.

"It’s Riley in the training room, trying to break your record before the month ends." She said.

"Interesting." Lukas nodded and said to himself.

When he was done, he wanted to have a glimpse of Riley to see how powerful Riley was.

"I’ve checked and all the demonic beast cores are authentic. You will get $100 for each demonic beast core."

Mandy said and immediately Lukas’s phone buzzed.

He took out his phone and saw the familiar message.

[$800 have been credited into your account.]

[Thank you for contributing to the defense of the Administration Area.]

Lukas then looked up and asked, "Mandy, I need to buy some more weaponry, could you help with that?"

"Sure, follow me." Mandy led him to the lift, and they went up to the weaponry room.

Lukas didn’t waste time, picked up boxes of bullets for his pistol, and a silencer for the pistol.

After what happened out in the woods, he wanted something to let him avoid the scavengers and other awakened teams.

He paid for the stuff and got down to the training room to see how Riley was doing.

"Riley, hang in there."

"You can do it."

"I have faith in you!"

The crowd of awakened shouted and cheered.

Riley looked out at them and brushed his long flowing blue hair.

He gave them a thumbs up and a wink.

Some of the awakened blushed at what he did.

He must be winking at me, they thought secretly to themselves.

Lukas’s eyes opened wide as he didn’t expect Riley to be so outgoing.

He looked on as the light beam appeared and the voice boomed from the speakers in the ceiling.

"Ember Ox eliminated."

"Initiating sequence for the fifth round."

Roar.

The Water Gorilla appeared, and it immediately opened its mouth, and a waterspout shot out from it.

Riley leaped away and the Water Gorilla turned its head to chase after him.

The waterspout followed Riley, leaving a trail of broken concrete sliced open by the waterspout.

Riley panted as he kept running.

His SSS Level Lightning had taken its toll on him again.

Every lightning strike he unleashed sucked so much of his energy that he could only deal out huge damage but for a very short duration.

Bright flashes of light started to appear at Riley’s hands.
