Part 5

Some time had passed since we had started cooking.

Gradually, the other classmates finished their dishes and started plating them.

Incidentally, the other students were making hamburgers.

I wished I had made hamburgers, too.

I continued cooking, glancing at them occasionally.

“Here we go.”

I threw several vegetables in the air at once and cut them to the perfect size with a knife in an instant.

Then, I put the cut ingredients into the pot and stir-fried them.

Seeing me cook like that, the other students became excited.

“H-hey! He cut the ingredients in midair!”

“The ingredients are…dancing!”

“That’s not all! The fire seems to have a mind of its own, changing its intensity to match Yuuya-kun’s cooking!”

No, I’m not doing anything crazy.

Cutting vegetables in midair was a habit of mine, but other than that, I was cooking normally.

But the ingredients were dancing, and the fire’s intensity was changing on its own. What were they seeing?

Was I the weird one because I couldn’t see it?

“Hmph… That’s just child’s play.”

While I was confused by the reactions of those around me, Yuzuki-kun, who started cooking first, finished his dish.

“It’s ready.”

“I’m looking forward to it.”

He then brought the finished dish to Anke-sensei.

When the students saw the dish, they let out cries of surprise.

“Wow… It looks delicious!”

“What is that? It looks like something you’d get at a fancy restaurant!”

“What’s that sauce made of?”

To everyone’s surprise, Yuzuki-kun had made a steak with a tasty-looking sauce.

“This is Wagyu beef roti with red wine sauce.”

“Wagyu beef? And red wine!?”

You had that here?

I was surprised by the unexpected ingredients, and Yuzuki-kun looked at me with a triumphant expression.

“Of course. The battle starts with the choice of ingredients.”

“Eh…”

Well, that may be true, but…

First of all, I didn’t know such high-class ingredients were available. Once again, I realized how amazing Ousei Academy is.

I was more surprised by Yuzuki-kun’s cooking than by the academy, but Anke-sensei immediately tasted Yuzuki-kun’s dish.

“Mmm! It’s delicious! The heat is perfect, and the sauce goes well with it. It’s good enough to be served at a high-end restaurant!”

“Of course. I’ve been eating first-class cuisine since I was a child, and I’ve learned to cook from those chefs myself.”

It seemed that Yuzuki-kun’s family was wealthy and ate amazing meals every day.

I kind of expected that from the way he carried himself, but still.

As I was thinking this, my dish was finished, so I brought it over to Anke-sensei.

“Hmph. Now, what kind of dish will you make to compete with mine?”

Yuzuki-kun said this as if he were already confident of victory.

But I don’t think I can win.

The reason is…

“Yuuya-kun’s dish is…”

“Eh? Huh?”

“It’s not a mistake, is it?”

When my classmates saw the dish I made, they reacted differently than they did with Yuzuki-kun earlier.

That’s right; what I made was nikujaga. [T/N: Japanese-style meat and potato stew.]

I didn’t think he would make such an amazing dish! It’s home economics class, after all.

That’s why I made something I’m used to making at home.

Well, unlike Yuzuki-kun, I’ve never eaten fancy dishes. Even if I were told to make one, I wouldn’t know how without a recipe.

In any case, when Yuzuki-kun saw the nikujaga I brought, he frowned.

“…What is this? Are you making fun of me?”

“That’s not what I meant. It’s just the only thing I know how to cook.”

“…Huh. This is completely useless. Sensei, there’s no need to eat it.”

Yuzuki-kun said coldly. But Anke-sensei shook her head.

“No, that’s not how it works. Nikujaga is a fine dish, and I’ll eat it properly.”

“…Do as you like. It doesn’t matter anyway; I’m going to win.”

Yuzuki-kun lost interest in my dish as if to say that it was all a waste of time.

Then, Anke-sensei ate my nikujaga.

“…”

“…”

“……”

“……”

“………”

“……Um, Sensei?”

The silence continued, and I couldn’t take it anymore, so I asked her.

“De…”

“De?”

“──It’s delicious!”

“?!”

Anke-sensei shouted that while crying!

“What is this nikujaga? It’s perfect in every way, yet it also has a sense of warmth. I never knew such a dish existed!”

“What!?”

Yuzuki-kun looked incredulous upon hearing Anke-sensei’s praise.

“Don’t be ridiculous! How can a commoner’s dish be better than my cooking?”

“Komyouin-kun, if you don’t believe me, why don’t you try it yourself?”

Anke-sensei said this and handed Yuzuki-kun my nikujaga.

Yuzuki-kun looked confused for a moment but eventually took a bite.

“!?”

At that moment, his eyes widened, and he froze.

Anke-sensei continued speaking to him in a gentle voice.

“Do you understand? The winner of this contest is Yuuya-kun.”

“…”

“Eh, I won? Really?”

But Yuzuki-kun used Wagyu beef. His dish looked tastier than mine.

I was surprised by the unexpected decision. I thought Yuzuki-kun would protest somehow.

However, he didn’t protest and left the home economics room without saying a word.

“Well, that was a very good match. Now, everyone, let’s eat the dishes you made.”

With that, Anke-sensei, seemingly unconcerned about Yuzuki-kun, told the students who had been watching the situation to begin eating. They were somewhat confused.

In the end, everyone enjoyed a harmonious meal together.

However, while everyone else was eating hamburgers, I was eating nikujaga.

As I ate the nikujaga with mixed feelings, Kaede approached me.

“Hey, Yuuya. If it’s okay, can I have a bite of your nikujaga?”

“Huh? Sure, I don’t mind, but…”

I gave Kaede the remaining nikujaga.

She put it in her mouth, and her eyes widened.

“Mmm! What is this? It’s so delicious!”

“R-really? I just made it normally.”

“No, no, no! This is the best nikujaga I’ve ever had! I can see why Anke-sensei praised it so much!”

Kaede ate my nikujaga with a look of genuine appreciation on her face.

Seeing this, Luna hurriedly approached us.

“Kaede, that’s not fair! Yuuya, give me some, too!”

“Eh, what!? But there’s not much left…”

“Hmm! Yuuya’s cooking is really delicious!”

“You’re eating it!”

Without waiting for my permission, Luna took the nikujaga from Kaede and started eating it.

Inspired by the two of them, the other students started asking for my nikujaga, too, and it was almost gone.

As a result, I didn’t get to eat any.

But that’s okay; they’re enjoying it, so they didn’t have to worry about me. I didn’t think ordinary nikujaga would cause such a commotion.

Seeing everyone’s reactions, I couldn’t help but grimace. Then, I suddenly thought of Yuzuki-kun.

“Come to think of it, is it okay that he left without permission when class is still in session?”

Well, maybe he has some mysterious power that can influence Sensei’s thoughts, just like when he made this cooking competition happen.

With that thought in mind, I managed to get through the joint class. However, I couldn’t stop worrying about Yuzuki-kun, who was left alone.

***

While Yuuya and Yuzuki were having a cooking contest,

Meanwhile, Night and the others were enjoying a peaceful time at home.

“Fugo! Buhi, buhi!”

“Pii!”

“Puon!”

Akatsuki looked like an instructor and gave off a somewhat stern atmosphere. Ciel and Don straightened their posture.

“Buhi? Fugo!”

Then, as if to say, “Watch closely,” Akatsuki thrust out his front legs confidently.

It was a copy of Usagi’s training routine.

He thrust his front legs forward several times with quick movements, then looked satisfied.

“Buhi~”

Unfortunately, Akatsuki’s kicks weren’t as sharp as Usagi’s or Night’s, but they were quite cute. In Akatsuki’s mind, they were perfect.

Satisfied, Akatsuki quickly returned to his stern expression and turned back to Ciel and Don.

“Buhi, buhibuhi!”

“Piii!”

“Puoon!”

Then, as if to say, “Try it,” he urged the two of them. Ciel and Don nodded.

Then…

“Pii!”

Ciel’s sharp kick sliced through the air.

The force was tremendous, and the wind pressure from the kick hit Akatsuki.

“Fugoo!?”

Akatsuki was knocked over by the wind.

“Pip!”

Ciel asked, as if to say, “How was that?” Akatsuki staggered to his feet and nodded.

“Fu-fugo…”

I guess that’s a pass, he thought. He turned his gaze to Don.

Then, Don gathered his strength and thrust his front legs forward.

“Puooon!”

However, Don’s movements were slow and far from sharp.

Akatsuki nodded with a smug expression at such a kick.

“Buhi, buhibuhi.”

“Puon…”

Akatsuki looked as if to say, “You’ve still got a long way to go,” and Don looked dejected.

As if to vent his frustration, Don slammed his front legs into the ground with great force.

“Puooon!”

“Buhi!”

The next moment, the ground shook violently. Akatsuki was unable to withstand the tremor and rolled over.

Don may not have had Ciel’s sharpness, but he had tremendous leg strength. Being stepped on by such feet would not end well.

If Usagi had been there, everyone except Akatsuki would have been considered promising and received training. The only one who realized this was Night, who was quietly resting.

Then, Stella, who had been watching Akatsuki and the others, cried out when she saw Akatsuki lying on the ground.

“Nya.”

“Fu-fugo!?”

Akatsuki immediately got up and charged at Stella, who was meowing as if mocking him.

However, Stella didn’t panic. She looked at Akatsuki and stopped his charge by pressing her front paws against his head.

“Nyanya.”

“Fuu, fugooh!”

Akatsuki struggled desperately, but Stella’s front paws didn’t budge.

Then, when she suddenly let go, he fell over from the momentum.

“Buhii!”

“Nyanya~”

“Buhihii!”

As Stella left the scene, Akatsuki chased her angrily.

“Pipi!”

“Puooon!”

Thinking that a new game had begun, Ciel and Don joined the chase, too.

“Woof…”

Night yawned, ignoring Akatsuki and the others.

Then, Ouma, who had also been watching Akatsuki and the others, opened his mouth in exasperation.

“Hmph… This house has become quite lively. Because he keeps bringing more creatures here without thinking, it’s become cramped.”

“Come on, it’s good to have more family members.”

Kuuya laughed cheerfully at Ouma.

“I’m not saying it’s bad. I’m just saying he should think before acting. There’s only so much space on this land.”

“That’s true, but if it gets cramped, we’ll think about it then. If necessary, we can always move.”

“…Do you really think you can just move all the stuff in the storage room somewhere else?”

“…You’re right.”

The two thought about the storage room and sighed.

Ignoring them, Akatsuki and the others intensified their chase, eventually running around the house.

Then, Meiko, who was cleaning, finally lost her temper.

“Hey!”

“Buh, buhi!”

“It’s good that you’re energetic, but please don’t run around inside the house. Besides, you’ll get the floor dirty!”

“P-pii…”

“Puoon…”

“Nya…”

Akatsuki and the others looked dejected after being scolded.

“Good grief… they’re totally complacent thanks to peacetime.”

Seeing everyone like that, Ouma let out an exasperated sigh.
