Chapter 2 – Christmas Party

Part 1

A few days had passed since the cooking competition with Yuzuki-kun.

After the competition, he seemed down, so I thought he wouldn’t bother me anymore.

However, he became even more aggressive, challenging me to “speed eating contests” and “let’s see who can get out of school faster,” as well as other competitions I didn’t understand.

I couldn’t escape, so I was forced to participate in these challenges every time.

But I ended up winning all of them unintentionally, which probably made him want to bother me even more.

I didn’t want to win, but I always ended up winning somehow.

I thought about losing on purpose, but he seemed to read my mind and said, “I don’t want your pity! Let’s fight fairly!” So that was impossible, too.

As a result, he has bothered me constantly every day.

But today was the last day of that routine!

Because…

“Hey, everyone. I know you have a lot going on during the New Year holiday, but don’t go too wild.”

──Tomorrow was the start of winter break!

During the after-school homeroom right now, our homeroom teacher, Sawada-sensei, was telling us how to spend our vacation. As usual, though, she didn’t seem very enthusiastic, so it didn’t feel like we’re being told off.

In any case, now that winter break had started, I wouldn’t have to worry about Yuzuki-kun bothering me.

I’d think about what happens when school starts again when the time comes. You could call it escapism.

As I find myself staring into the distance, Sawada-sensei continues.

“Also, I’m sure you all have homework for each subject, so don’t forget to do it!”

“Yes!”

Everyone responded to Sensei’s words, and the homeroom was over.

As I was getting ready to go home, Ryo and the others approached me.

“Winter break is finally here!”

“Yeah, I’m looking forward to the party.”

“Yeah! Speaking of which, do you have any plans besides the party during the break, Yuuya?”

“Well, sort of, but I’ll basically just be hanging out.”

“Then let’s get together with me and Shingo sometime!”

“Sure!”

I made plans to hang out with Ryo and Shingo-kun, and then we all went our separate ways.

On the way home, I worried that Yuzuki-kun might bother me again. However, I made it through the school gate and all the way home without being bothered, and I let out a sigh of relief.

“Phew… Lately, I’ve been getting caught up in all sorts of things, but I’m going to enjoy winter break!”

With that, I headed home, filled with anticipation for the upcoming winter break.

***

──Meanwhile, Yuuya was receiving an explanation about winter break.

In a certain abandoned building, several figures appeared.

However, the people gathered there did not appear to be ordinary citizens.

They were all dressed in suits and holding futuristic-looking guns or colorful, single-edged laser swords.

At the center of the group was a woman with purple hair and eerie red eyes.

She was the director of the Special Mutation Countermeasures Bureau, Oki Hinako.

She spoke with a somewhat unhappy expression.

“Why was I called here?”

“Because a ‘mutation precursor’ was detected in this area.”

That’s right; Oki and the other Special Mutation Countermeasures Bureau members had gathered in the deserted, abandoned building because a mutation precursor had been detected there.

Mutations referred to all supernatural phenomena, including the entities and anomalies that Yuzuki’s family, the Komyouin clan, dealt with. Their levels were determined by their scale.

Special humans were secretly working to deal with these signs of mutation before they could affect human society.

However, Oki remained in a bad mood after hearing the explanation from her subordinates.

“I know that. What I want to know is whether this mutation is serious enough to require my involvement. Can’t you handle it yourselves?”

“No, no, no! This time, the signs are at Level 3! We can’t do it!”

The Level 3 mutation the staff member mentioned could destroy an entire town, and only a limited number of staff members, even among the Special Unit, were capable of dealing with it.

“Even so, it doesn’t have to be me. Sakaki-san could do it…”

“Captain Sakaki is overseas for training, and the other captains are busy dealing with the recent increase in mutations. There are no free hands.”

“This is such a hassle. I haven’t even decided what to wear yet.”

“Huh? What do you mean, ‘what to wear’?”

The male subordinate tilted his head, not understanding Oki. Oki raised her voice.

“That’s right! I haven’t decided on the perfect outfit to wear when I meet him. Yuuya-kun!”

“What… No way! That’s so weird!”

“Huh? What’s so weird about it?”

“Everything!”

When the male employee shouted this, the other employees around him nodded in agreement.

“Hey! What’s so weird about that!?”

“First of all, meeting the extremely important Yuuya Tenjou is for work. There’s no need to choose an outfit; just wear your usual suit!”

“Rejected!”

“Rejected?”

“That’s right. I have to choose the perfect outfit so he can see me at my best, don’t you agree?”

“It’s not decided! Even if we concede that point and allow casual attire, we found out about the meeting with him a long time ago. How much longer are you going to agonize over this?”

“Until I decide on the perfect outfit.”

“This person is hopeless…”

The male staff member’s lament was echoed by the others.

As they made a commotion, one staff member operated a watch-like device and noticed something.

“Everyone, be on alert!”

Hearing this, all the staff members except Oki simultaneously drew their weapons and began watching their surroundings.

The next moment, the entire building shook violently.

Then, the space in front of them distorted greatly.

“What!?”

The staff were startled by the sudden occurrence. The distortion grew larger and larger, eventually revealing a strange entity.

It was a giant mannequin.

However, unlike a normal mannequin, its face was upside down, it had countless arms sprouting from its back, and it had multiple legs, greatly deviating from human form.

Most unsettling of all, the mannequin’s upside-down face was adorned with eerie eyes and a mouth, making it seem as though it could drain one’s soul just by looking at it.

A special wave of energy was emanating from the giant mannequin. The staff member closest to it was hit directly by the wave, causing them to kneel down and vomit.

“Ugh!”

“Are you okay!?”

“Get them down immediately!”

However, Oki remained calm and immediately gave instructions.

“I see. This building was originally a shopping mall, and the mannequins mutated when the mall closed. Still, I didn’t think there was enough accumulated negativity to cause such a mutation…”

As Oki analyzed the mannequin, it opened its mouth wide and let out a bloodcurdling scream.

“Oooooooooohhhh!”

The scream contained the same force that had caused the staff member to vomit earlier. If anyone were to be hit by it, they would suffer the same fate.

However, the staff members had already activated their watch-like devices, covering their entire bodies with a special energy that prevented the mannequin’s attack.

The mannequins’ screams were not just a means of attack, though.

In response, the surrounding space warped, and various mutations appeared: shoes with mouths, hats with eyes, and a creepy, huge clock.

These mutations resembled the products that had been sold in the shopping mall before it closed.

Then, the mutations summoned by the mannequin attacked Oki and the others all at once.

“Begin the sweep!”

When Oki gave the order, the staff raised their guns and swords and attacked the mutations.

Their weapons were equipped with special energy emitted from the watch-shaped devices they had obtained earlier. This energy, called an “otherworldly power” within the special phenomenon, was one of the means of countering the mutations.

The staff used these weapons to fight the approaching creatures, but there were more than expected. Gradually, some staff members began to suffer casualties.

“Gyaaaah!”

“What!? Damn it! Get away!”

One staff member was bitten by a mutated shoe-shaped creature with a mouth, but another staff member immediately cut it down.

However, another mutant appeared and began to overwhelm the staff.

“These things keep coming back as soon as we take them down!”

“Don’t let them get close!”

Oki then appeared and confronted the mutants.

“Hmph!”

She lightly thrust her bare hand forward, and several mutated creatures vanished in an instant.

She charged into the swarm of mutated creatures with that momentum and defeated them with her elegant martial arts skills.

“That’s amazing…”

“As expected of the director… Defeating mutated creatures with her bare hands…”

While the staff members were astonished by Oki’s barehanded annihilation of the creatures, she was assessing their strength.

“The mutated creatures that were summoned are just level one trash at best.”

Then, after casually slaughtering the summoned creatures, she sped up and approached the giant mannequin quickly.

“Oooooo!”

The giant mannequin let out a cry of surprise when it saw Oki in front of it. It had not expected her to sneak past the army of mutated creatures and approach it in an instant.

“I want to go home and pick out some clothes. Don’t get in my way.”

“Oooo…”

In an instant.

Just as the mannequin was about to attack Oki, its body was torn to pieces.

Oki’s hands held a single-edged sword that had appeared there somehow.

Yes, in that instant, Oki had sliced the mannequin into pieces with the sword she had picked up.

Without even glancing at the disappearing mannequin, Oki annihilated the remaining mutated creatures.

As a result, all of the mutated creatures were completely destroyed in less than five minutes.

“Level 3 mutations, cut to pieces in an instant…”

“After all, captain-level people are different from us…”

Everyone present recognized that Oki was strong, but they were shocked by her fighting ability once again.

Oblivious to the staff’s reactions, however, Oki spoke with an air of annoyance.

“Well, that’s done. I’m heading back. Clean up the mess, will you?”

“Y-yes…”

“Still, I wonder what kind of clothes I should wear to make Yuuya-kun happy. I can’t wait to see him… Ufu, ufufufufu…”

With a sinister smile, Oki left.

***

“Hmm…”

The special humans were just withdrawing from the abandoned building when…

A man wearing a suit and a beast-shaped mask visited the building where the mutants had been moments earlier.

He proceeded to the center of the building and casually waved his hand.

In the next instant, space warped, and a glass orb split in two and appeared.

“The experiment was successful for now, but with this level of thought, Level 3 is the limit.”

The masked man retrieved the glass orb and surveyed the building once more.

“If we can induce a mutation and then eliminate it, the thoughts will also disappear, making reproduction impossible. In other words, triggering a powerful mutation rather than sustaining one would be more efficient. This is a new insight we’ve gained.”

As he spoke, the man snapped his fingers.

A crack appeared in the space before his eyes.

“However, we still need to research whether this phenomenon is limited to this land or if it can be sustained in any land with a certain level of spiritual energy. That still needs to be researched.”

Without hesitation, the man stepped into the crack and smiled with interest.

“In any case, let’s move on to the next place. Numerically speaking, it should produce the highest level of mutation that we can currently achieve. I wonder how it will turn out…”

With that, the man vanished into the crack, laughing joyfully.
