Chapter 96: Peacful way From an Undead
’Past?’ Renjiro thought, a small smile playing on his lips. The name sounded faintly familiar, almost comical. Still, this Bone Dragon’s show of respect was unexpected, and rather welcome.
Renjiro replied calmly, his voice carrying easily, "It seems there is a strange connection between you and my people, Dragon. Even now, after you have become... this creature of bone, our paths cross again."
"Haha! Indeed! And you have the little old man on the peak to thank for this meeting!" Bine Dragon laughed, the sound dry and rattling. "He’s the one who dragged me back from the peace of death, forcing me into this eternal undeath."
High above, Varn’s hidden face flushed a dark, angry red. This cursed Bone Dragon, was deliberately shaming him, a powerful Necromancer, right in front of the enemy! He swore, if he got out of this alive, he would never summon this disrespectful bag of bones again unless he absolutely had no other choice.
Renjiro gestured subtly towards the mountaintop. "The necromancer up there seems... rather hostile towards my elves."
The Bone Dragon dipped its skull in agreement. "Varn is my master, yes, but he is also a greedy, shameless old creature. He has undoubtedly set his sights on Your Majesty’s beautiful, magical Elven Crown."
Varn shrieked from the peak, his voice cracking with fury, "You! Do you want me to scatter your soul fire to the winds right now?!"
The Bone Dragon completely ignored him, as if he hadn’t spoken.
It turned back to Renjiro, its tone becoming almost apologetic. "Please forgive him, Your Majesty Elf King. The old fool is close to death, you see, and it makes him... irritable. Not like us dragons and elves, hm? We are among the noblest races. Even facing oblivion, we maintain our dignity."
Renjiro’s smile remained faint, but his eyes were sharp. "So, dragon... despite all this, are you going to try and take my Crown for him?"
The Bone Dragon lowered its great skull slightly, a gesture that seemed both regretful and resigned.
"Yes," the Bone Dragon’s voice rumbled, deep and echoing like stones grinding together. "I have great respect for you, and for the Elf King before you. But you must understand, Varn is my master. I have to follow his orders until the day he dies as his summon."
Someone, hidden nearby, listened intently to this exchange.
Meanwhile, on the mountaintop, Varn fidgeted, growing annoyed. ’What? Why do I have to wait?’ he fumed inwardly. ’I’m the master here! It’s my right!’
Unable to hold back, Varn bellowed, "Hey! Dragon! What are you waiting for? Kill that damn Elf King now and bring me the Elf Crown on his head! NOW!"
"Quiet, Varn!" the Bone Dragon snapped back, its voice ringing with undeniable power. "I know how to handle this, so just let me do it in silence!"
"Stupid fucking dragon!" Varn muttered under his breath, his face red with anger.
High above, the bone dragon hung in the air. It was huge, easily stretching dozens of meters from head to tail. A cold feeling of death spread out from its skeleton body. It had no blood or flesh, just an eerie blue soulfire burning like cold flames in its empty eye sockets.
Slowly, it lowered its massive skull, fixing its glowing eyes on Renjiro. The Elf King sat calmly on Unicorn, the Elf Crown resting on his head.
The Bone Dragon’s eyes seemed to narrow, focusing intensely.
The air grew heavy with silence. Everyone knew a big fight was about to start.
All the elf hunters and archers drew closer, weapons ready. Flying tree creatures zipped through the air above, and giant golems, easily twenty meters tall, stomped into place. They formed a tight circle around Renjiro, ready to protect him.
"Hmph," Sylphie, Unicorn, snorted, shifting nervously on her feet.
Renjiro gently patted her neck. "It’s okay," he seemed to signal. "Don’t worry."
The Bone Dragon spoke again, its voice a low rumble. "huh... hmmmm. You are very brave. You show no fear, even standing before me, the Undead Dragon."
Renjiro gave a small smile. "My first impression of you isn’t bad. But I must admit, I truly dislike the undead and the death energy clinging to you to your body and your very self."
The Bone Dragon didn’t seem offended. It understood how elves felt about undead.
"Well," it went on, "your honesty earns you my friendship! I swear by the Dragon God, if you just hand over the Elf Crown, I will not harm you or any of your people. Let me just take that greedy, shameless old man Varn away, and then maybe we can talk properly."
Renjiro’s answer was firm. "I’m afraid I can’t do that."
"That’s a shame!" The Bone Dragon let out a sound like a deep sigh, sending dust swirling from its bones. It really didn’t want to fight the elves. "Then I have no choice but to take the Elf Crown myself! I apologize, but... this might include... killing."
Up on the mountain peak, the Necromancer Varn was completely out of patience. He screamed in rage, "Y-you! Are you done talking yet? Hurry up and get that damn Crown for me!"
The Bone Dragon whipped its skull-like head toward the mountaintop. A blast of blue fire shot from its jaws, hitting the rocks near Varn.
"Be quiet, old fool!" it roared. "Are you trying to speed up your time to die and cross iver to the other world of deads?"
"I am your master!" Varn sputtered, almost choking on his own fury. "How dare my own summoned creature talk to me like this?!"
The young woman next to him quickly patted his back. She worried her master might actually drop dead from anger. If he died, how could she, a weak necromancer, survive alone out here?
Just then, the Bone Dragon turned its terrifying head back to the elves. A huge wave of dark energy flowed out from its soulfire eyes, wrapping around its giant skeleton body like a thick, gray fog.
"ROAR!!!" the Bone Dragon bellowed, the sound shaking the very air.
"I’m repeating the offer even though I know the answer... so if possible make the right choice!"
