Chapter 95: An Undead Dragon
Chapter 95: An Undead Dragon
Renjiro looked back up at the two figures cloaked in black. His eyes narrowed slightly on the frail-looking old man wielding the bone scepter.
"So," Renjiro stated calmly, "that necromancer is a high-level threat, then?"
"Yes!" Elaria confirmed her grave expressions.
Renjiro just offered a small, confident smile. "Don’t worry too much, Elaria. High-level or not, it makes no difference. Even if a stronger one came here to challenge me, in my presence, they would kneel!"
Elaria still looked worried. "Even so, Your Majesty, please be careful."
Renjiro gave a slight nod, then asked curiously, "This Gate of the Underworld... does it actually open a path to the land of the dead?"
"No, Your Majesty, that’s just what it’s called," Elaria explained quickly. "It works more like a magical doorway. It lets the necromancer pull specific undead servants from somewhere else, not from the true realm of the dead."
"Understood," Renjiro replied, making a mental note. Elaria really was invaluable. He decided he’d just ask her directly whenever he didn’t recognize something from now on.
As they spoke...
The grey portal on the peak flared wide open. With a sound like rolling thunder mixed with the clatter of giant bones, a massive dragon emerged. It was huge, easily stretching dozens of meters from snout to tail tip, a truly awe-inspiring and dreadful sight.
But this was no living dragon of flesh and scale. Its entire body was made of massive, blackened dragon bones, fitted together perfectly.
There was no muscle, no skin, just bone.
Even its enormous wings were complex structures of pure bone, clicking and grating against the air as they beat powerfully, lifting the monstrous undead creature high into the sky above the Mountains of Ashes.
The only sign of unlife in the Bone Dragon were its eyes, twin points of faint, eerie green light glowing deep within the empty sockets.
The soul fire, the mark of the undead!
"ROOOOAR!!"
The Bone Dragon threw back its massive skull and let loose a tremendous roar. The sound wave blasted across the mountaintop, sending loose bones flying like dry leaves in a gale. Many shattered into fine dust upon hitting the rocks.
The sight alone was enough to inspire dread!
Slowly, the Bone Dragon beat its enormous bone wings, its body, stretching dozens of meters long, hovering effortlessly high in the air.
It angled its skeletal neck downwards, fixing those dimly glowing green eyes on the small figure of the necromancer, Varn. Its voice echoed, ancient and dry like shifting sand, "Varn. You disturb my slumber again? Must you constantly cause trouble wherever you go?"
Varn’s shoulders stiffened beneath his robe. He often wondered if this Bone Dragon even remembered it was hissummoned servant. If it did, why was it always so infuriatingly arrogant, so disrespectful?
"My dear summon," Varn said, forcing a tight politeness into his raspy voice, "you exaggerate. You’ve slept plenty! It’s been three full years since I last called you!"
"Three years?" the Bone Dragon scoffed, the sound like boulders grinding together. "A mere nap for the great me, who enjoys eternal unlife."
"Well, I haven’t become a lich yet!" Varn snapped, his frustration boiling over. "I don’t have eternal life!"
"Ah, yes, quite right," the Bone Dragon drawled, sounding almost bored. "You are very, very old, Varn. Soon, you will finally die. And then, the great me can return to his rest, undisturbed."
’What?!’
Varn nearly choked, sputtering with rage under his hood. If he wasn’t practically standing with one foot in the grave already, and if he didn’t desperately need this arrogant pile of bones’ power, he’d blast its soul fire to smithereens right now!
The bone dragon then turned its massive skull, its gaze falling upon the young woman hiding nervously behind Varn. "Hmm, Varn. Is this little necromancer a... sacrificed you brought for me?"
The woman let out a small squeak of fear and shrank further behind her master.
Varn quickly stepped sideways, shielding her. "She is my apprentice! Put such thoughts out of your head! I summoned you this time to deal with that army of elves down below!"
"Elves?!" Bone Dragon’s voice rose slightly, a flicker of genuine surprise in its ancient tone.
It immediately twisted its long neck, focusing its gaze on the elven forces gathered at the foot of the mountain.
"Well, well, Varn, perhaps your old eyes aren’t completely useless. Those are indeed elves, one of the truly noble races of this continent! And look – unicorns... Giant Golems... and an elf wearing the Crown! Is that the Elf King of this age?"
"You!" Varn yelled, his voice strained with anger, "He is your target, your enemy!"
The Bone Dragon clicked its enormous, sharp teeth together, a thoughtful, grating sound. "Elves are as noble as we dragons once were. An Elf King... his rank is equal to our own Dragon Leader!"
Varn sneered bitterly. "Don’t be absurd. You are an undead Bone Dragon now. Your glory, your name, your very being... the Dragon Clan threw you away ages ago. You are not one of them anymore!"
The Bone Dragon slowly shook its massive head, a strangely sorrowful gesture.
"You speak the truth, Varn. I was indeed cast out by my kin. However," its voice took on a surprisingly earnest tone, "that does not change the respect I hold for Elves!"
Under the utterly baffled stares of Varn and his apprentice...
The Bone Dragon gave an almost playful flick of its bony tail. It swooped smoothly down the mountainside, coming to hover directly before Renjiro.
Then, with surprising grace for such a monstrous creature, it bent its right wing, placing the sharp tip across its hollow, skeletal chest.
It was the formal salute of the ancient Dragon Clan.
Bone Dragon spoke, its voice now resonating with unexpected warmth, "Elf King! It is my distinct honor to meet you! Long, long ago, while hunting near the great forest, I had the immense fortune to encounter the previous revered Elf King. That wise and kind ruler taught me much about the deeper flows of magic and power. Truly, without his generous guidance back then, I doubt I would have ever reached the strength I once possessed!"
