Chapter 94: Powerful Summon
Chapter 94: Powerful Summon
Instantly, the effect was clear. The skeletons, which had been poised to follow Varn’s mental commands and surge down towards the elves, suddenly ignored him. Their attention snapped entirely to the giant stone figures that had just crashed into their midst.
Whether they carried rusty blades or were armed only with bony claws, the skeletons turned as one.
They swarmed towards the ten Golems, ignoring everything else.
Soon, each Golem was surrounded by a thick tide of clattering undead.
Their attacks – hacking, scratching, biting – were completely useless against the Golems’ magical stone hides. It was like throwing pebbles against a fortress wall; they couldn’t even chip off a tiny piece of rock. Yet, driven by the Golems’ magical taunt, the skeletons attacked relentlessly, fiercely, mindlessly.
Back on the mountaintop...
The old necromancer, Varn, stared in disbelief.
"What? What just happened? What did those Golems do? My summons... they’re ignoring my commands! I... I can’t control them anymore!"
Varn was utterly baffled.
He’d never encountered anything like this before. Undead were supposed to obey their summoner!
The young woman beside him ventured nervously, "Master... I’ve read that some giants possess unique, innate abilities. Could... could that roar have been some kind of special giant power?"
Varn nodded slowly, his hidden face grim. "That’s very likely!"
Just at that moment...
A dense cloud of arrows shot up from the elven lines below. They soared high above the chaotic swirl of skeletons and Golems, reached the peak of their arc, and then rained down.
Varn let out a rough laugh. "Foolish elves! Physical attacks mean little to the undead! Everyone knows only the Light Magic truly stops them!"
And indeed, as the arrows struck...
Countless skeletons were hit, arrows sticking out from their bony bodies. But they didn’t fall. They didn’t even seem to notice, still mindlessly hacking and clawing at the Giant Golems they were locked onto.
Another wave of arrows flew, then another.
Soon, many skeletons looked like bony pincushions, bristling with shafts, but they still stood, still attacked.
It seemed these skeletons, summoned by this particular necromancer, were almost completely resistant to the elves’ regular arrows.
Elaria turned to her king, her brow furrowed. "Your Majesty, our archers’ arrows seem to have no effect on these skeletons. Any living creature would have fallen long ago."
Renjiro frowned, watching the futile assault.
Were they truly unkillable? No, that didn’t feel right. Nothing in this world was truly immortal, not even the gods. There had to be a weak spot.
Suddenly, Elaria’s eyes widened slightly. "Your Majesty! I remember! Undead creatures have a ’soul fire’! Destroy that, and they truly die!"
"Soul fire?" Renjiro repeated, considering it.
Just then, a single arrow flew faster and straighter than the rest, making a sharp zip sound as it cut through the air.
Renjiro looked up just in time to see it strike home. It was an arrow loosed by Selena, the sharp-eyed commander of his archer force.
The powerful elven arrow slammed right into the center of a skeleton warrior’s skull. The touch of elven magic woven into the arrowhead instantly snuffed out the weak, flickering light deep within – the skeleton’s soul fire.
The soul fire was the very core of an undead creature’s existence. Like a living person’s soul, but for the undead, it was often faintly visible, a small, eerie green spark deep inside their skulls, like the glow of marsh gas in a dark cemetery. Put out that fire, and their unnatural existence simply ends.
And sure enough, the moment its soul fire vanished, the skeleton warrior collapsed. Its form crumbled instantly into a loose pile of ordinary, lifeless bones on the ground, never to rise again.
Selena’s clear, commanding voice cut through the sounds of battle: "Archers! Aim for their skulls! Target the soul fire! Channel your magic into your shots to destroy it!"
"Yes, Commander!" came the unified shout.
Whoosh!
Another volley of arrows flew skyward.
This time, every archer took careful aim at the heads of the skeletons still swarming the Golems.
As the magically charged arrows rained down...
Skeleton after skeleton was struck in the skull. Their soul fires winked out like snuffed candles, extinguished by the elven magic carried by the arrowheads. One by one, the animated skeletons fell apart, collapsing into piles of inert bone.
It took less than a minute. After just a few well-aimed volleys, not a single skeleton remained standing on the battlefield.
Renjiro laughed, a clear, pleased sound. "Undead or not," he announced, his voice easily carrying over the sudden quiet, "before my archers, they are nothing!"
Hearing their king’s praise, the elven archers below let out a proud cheer.
But high up on the mountain peak, the necromancer Varn trembled, shaking not from the cold mountain air, but from pure, helpless rage.
He was furious!
"Ignorant elves!" he shrieked, his voice thin and ragged with fury. "Did you truly believe that was all the power a Necromancer like me possesses?"
He gripped his bone scepter tightly, raising it high above his head.
Thick, dark energy swirled violently in the air before him, coalescing rapidly into the shape of a doorway that shimmered with a disturbing, sickly grey light.
"Come forth!" Varn bellowed, thrusting his scepter towards the newly formed gate. "My Dragon!"
As the grey portal pulsed, expanding rapidly, a terrifying dragon’s roar blasted out, echoing across the barren peaks and shaking the very ground.
"What is that?!" Renjiro asked sharply, his gaze locked on the strange, shimmering portal that had appeared high on the mountaintop. He could feel an immense, cold wave of necromantic power washing down from it.
Elaria frowned beside him, quickly searching her deep well of knowledge. The dragon’s roar sparked a memory, and her face immediately grew serious.
"Your Majesty," she said urgently, her voice low and tight, "that looks like a Gate to the Underworld! It’s a sign of an extremely powerful summon! With a gate like that, they can summon a very strong undead army from very far away or a very strong undead!"
