Chapter 487: Chapter 484: The Suddenly Appearing Youth_1

All the zombies had disappeared from sight. Qiongli glanced at the dark, unlit tunnel and hesitated. She had no idea what was inside or why the zombies had retreated.

She wasn’t sure if zombies behaved like wild animals, but if they were retreating, what did that indicate?

No matter how she thought about it, it made her skin crawl. There was a Level 4 zombie among the horde, and it was only a matter of time before her group was chased down!

She glanced at both sides of the tunnel. On one side, a sheer, trembling ridge; on the other, a valley thrown into disarray by the storm. In the distance, a mountain village was faintly visible.

Perhaps she and some of the other New Humans, with their superior physical abilities, could bypass the tunnel by going around it. But what about the children and the elderly left behind?

As she was about to say something, she saw Brother Zhang and his group already entering the tunnel, muttering, "Women will be women."

Seemingly irritated by the crying from little Nannan in his arms, he turned back and yelled, "Shut up, you little brat, or I’ll kill you!"

At this, Nannan’s crying amplified, and she began sobbing out the words "Daddy" and "Ah Fu."

"F*ck!"

Cursing, Brother Zhang produced a knife and stalked towards Qiongli, his face cold.

The tunnel was thick with darkness. Paired with this atmosphere, Nannan’s weeping was especially eerie. The survivors, who had just escaped from the zombie horde, felt their hearts jump into their throats all over again.

"Hold it right there!"

Qiongli brandished her army knife at Brother Zhang, yelling firmly. Sensing the homicidal intent emanating from Brother Zhang, Nannan struggled in her arms. The frail-looking hands wildly scratched at Qiongli and managed to tear through her clothes, leaving several bloody streaks on her skin.

While attempting to calm Nannan, Qiongli kept a wary eye on Brother Zhang.

"We’re stuck with these useless people all day. What can they even do? Cry? What if they attract the zombies? F*ck, b*tch, if you dare to get in my way today, I’ll kill you first!"

As he spoke, Brother Zhang charged forth. His machete gleamed menacingly. With one hand holding Nannan, Qiongli lost half of her combat power. She seemed bound to lose. Several Level 1 New Humans rushed to assist her.

They were no match for a Level 3 New Human, however. One swing of Brother Zhang’s machete and two men were beheaded, blood gushing.

Appalled, Qiongli thrust her knife forward, repelling Brother Zhang momentarily. She swiftly retreated.

"Are you crazy?"

"You’re talking crap! You’re the crazy one! This is the Apocalypse! Don’t fool yourself into thinking it’s a time of peace! Heh, this brat is a New Human... I wonder how she tastes."

When Brother Zhang noticed something strange about Nannan, he grinned with a twisted delight. Shocked, Qiongli had only thought he was at most a violent man, not realizing he could resort to cannibalism.

But she never imagined this man had done such things!

The other survivors were also horrified. Upon reminiscing about what they had seen earlier, they all felt nauseous and now looked at Brother Zhang with fear.

To them, anyone who had eaten another human was no longer their kin, but a human-shaped zombie!

"You monster, get lost!" With an increased grip on Nannan, Qiongli seemed to soothe the child. No longer struggling, Nannan now stared at Brother Zhang.

As Qiongli continued to back away, she tried to find a spot to set Nannan down so she could engage Brother Zhang in a one-on-one combat. Despite her effort, she couldn’t find the opportunity. The time spent placing Nannan down was enough for Brother Zhang to kill her twice over!

The bystanders were outraged, loudly berating Brother Zhang and his men. "animals without a shred of humanity!"

"Animals? Just because we are trying to survive? We are animals in your mouths, a bunch of ignorant wastes! Don’t paint yourselves as noble! What would you do if someone threatened your lives? Huh? Ha-ha!"

"Let me tell you, you’ve seen too little. You’re sheltered, with food, clothing, and housing. How about us? We were living meal to meal, always in danger. Have you ever been starving? Felt like you were literally starving to death?"

"You haven’t, but I have, and they have, too! You get to live like you’re in heaven at the shelter, but we’re out there searching for food and avoiding zombies, even watching out for our own kind! Not only do zombies eat people—people do, too!"

"You’ve never gone hungry. Could you stomach those disgusting bugs? You could not! But if you were starved for two-three weeks, months even, then you’d know there’s nothing a human wouldn’t eat..."

"I’m an animal? I’m just trying to survive! Just to see my wife one last time, even if she’s already dead, murdered, or eaten by those damned zombies! If anyone dares to slow me down before that, I’ll kill them!"

Brother Zhang scoffed at the people in front of him. These people reminded him of those children back before the Apocalypse, those who lived a carefree life in the cities. These people had the luxury to genuinely study and ask poor kids who didn’t love learning, "Your family is so poor. Why don’t you study hard?"

Each person’s circumstances were different. These people knew nothing about the experiences of those turned away from the shelters, yet they had the energy to do good deeds given their favorable circumstances.

He was different. From the start of this Apocalypse, he too had kindness, but after witnessing one inhuman event after another, he found that kindness laughable!

All he wanted was to survive and make it to the Chenyang 169 Base to see his hope materialize. He’d not let any foolish saintly woman with misplaced pity slow him down!

Qiongli was unlike this. She was aware that her actions may endanger more people. As the core of the team, her moral compass did not permit her to easily rob others of their lives. She had no right!

Inadvertently because of her, two people had already died at the hands of Brother Zhang. Maybe from the start, she shouldn’t have agreed to take Brother Zhang’s group along.

There was still a Level 2 New Human and three Level 1 New Humans present. If they teamed up, they could probably defeat Brother Zhang. However, the weakness of human nature would expose itself, and who would be willing to oppose Brother Zhang?

Even if they teamed up, some of them would still die, but who? No one was willing to sacrifice their life.

For a Level 3 New Human, killing New Humans of a lower level was all too easy!

"Hey, what are you guys doing?"

Suddenly, a slightly hoarse voice sounded. The people looked towards the source of the sound and spotted an exceptionally handsome young man sitting atop the tunnel. He seemed to have appeared out of nowhere.
