Chapter 26: Chapter 26 - Rarity commands the prize_1
Ning Yu’er wanted to say something to Tang Ye, but her words halted at the edge of her lips, she didn’t even know what to say.
"Can...can you... understand me?" She asked with a soft voice.
Tang Ye ignored her, carrying his food and headed outside.
"Ah, don’t go, wait for me."
Seeing that he was ignoring her, Ning Yu’er dumbfoundedly ran after Tang Ye.
Ah!
A zombie was lingering at the door. Seeing Ning Yu’er behind Tang Ye, it let out a roar. She screamed, and Tang Ye curled his lips, throwing his crowbar like a whip at the zombie.
Boom!
Zombie brains splattered everywhere. Ning Yu’er was startled by the bloody sight of Tang Ye, at the same time it also made her realize that she couldn’t go outside, otherwise she would be eaten! She gave Tang Ye a pitiful look, hoping for some reassurance, but Tang Ye merely glanced at her and pushed her back inside.
He killed off the rest of the wandering zombies nearby, then dragged their bodies out of the dormitory. Ever since the death of Lanlan and her mother, Tang Ye found it hard to muster any desire to save people. Nevertheless, judging from the girl’s expression, she seemed salvageable.
Tang Ye scratched his head, scooping the zombie brains in front of him off the floor, and threw them into his mouth one by one.
Ning Yu’er, who was locked in the dorm, didn’t hear any movement outside, causing her heart to rumble with various thoughts.
"Where did that zombie go? He didn’t leave, did he..."
She couldn’t help but feel scared. The classmates who had survived with her were now nowhere to be found, leaving her alone, heightening her already existing fear.
She wasn’t a privileged noblewoman who had never done any hard work, nor was she a spoiled child who depended on others to live, she was just afraid of being in an environment without any other human existence, familiar or strange! Seeing Tang Ye, who was different from other zombies, was like spotting a life-saving straw, making her want to rely on him.
As time ticked by, Ning Yu’er waited anxiously in the dorm, imagining countless scenarios of Tang Ye coming in, but there was still no movement outside, only the occasional growl of the other zombies.
Ning Yu’er looked at the windows, noticing that it was already evening. She collapsed on the ground like a soulless body, hugging her slender and evenly proportioned legs as tears streamed down her face. The darkness of the night seemed to gradually swallow her heart.
...
"Done!" Tang Ye twisted open a bottle of water, washing his bloody hands and looking at his masterpiece, a sigh escaped from his lips.
At the entrance of the school, he had used numerous zombie bodies to build a wall, like playing with lego blocks. However, it was only one meter high. His initial plan was to make it at least five or six meters high, but Tang Ye was too exhausted to kill any more zombies, so he cut some corners. But he was still satisfied with his work.
As for the quality, well, Tang Ye was just playing around. Anyone who put in a little effort could open a door.
Looking up towards the now dark sky, Tang Ye’s heart sank a little.
"I almost forgot someone, hopefully, you’re okay."
Tang Ye had forgotten about Ning Yu’er after he had locked her in the room. Considering that she was still just a child, Tang Ye couldn’t help feeling a bit remorseful.
Entering the dormitory, a zombie in a school uniform wandered down from the upper floor. Tang Ye twirled his crowbar in his hand and knocked it down with a single strike, its head bursting with another hit.
He casually threw the corpse out, planning to handle it the next day, then walked towards the dorm where Ning Yu’er was.
Seeing that the door hadn’t been tampered with, Tang Ye felt somewhat relieved. Just as he was about to enter, he suddenly came to a halt.
"She probably hasn’t eaten for a few days. I should bring her some food."
Looking at the dimly lit corridor in the shape of the Chinese character ’回,’ he didn’t see any other zombies. Thinking that a school this large ought to have a cafeteria, he left the dorm building.
About half an hour later, Tang Ye had walked around the entire campus, and now, looking at the words "cafeteria" above the doorway, the only thing he felt was rage.
"F*ck, what kind of damn school is this! So deceitful!"
He had circled around twice before realizing that he had entered the cafeteria through an archway, which was just a short distance away from Ning Yu’er’s location. It would have only taken five or six minutes to get there, but Tang Ye had taken half an hour, his frustration evident.
Walking past a few scattered zombies in school uniforms, Tang Ye stepped in. Based on his knowledge, school cafeterias usually have their own convenience stores.
Just as he thought, he saw the words "Qinxue Supermarket" as he entered. There were not many zombies inside the cafeteria, Tang Ye hadn’t counted, but there were probably no more than ten. He walked into the mini supermarket and was stupefied by the sight.
All the food on the shelves, gone!
Every time he went to a supermarket or convenience store in the past, they were full of stuff, allowing him to choose whatever he liked, but today, they were all gone?
Tang Ye was nearly angered to death by this school, but when he thought about it, it made sense. When the post-apocalyptic outbreak happened, black rain fell from the sky. Only those who stood under a cover could avoid turning into a zombie. Most of the students in school stayed in the classrooms, so the number of survivors here was the highest. And it was reasonable for the cafeteria, the only food source in the school, to be raided multiple times by survivors.
Looking at the messy boxes and snack wrappers on the floor, Tang Ye frowned. It seemed that everything edible was gone. He thought about going outside the school to find other supermarkets to get food.
But Honglin High School was uniquely situated, sandwiched between a residential area and a small commercial district. Tang Ye rarely came here before the apocalypse, and he didn’t know if there were any other snack shops nearby. The nearest convenience store he knew of was about two kilometers away, and Tang Ye didn’t feel like running that far.
Tang Ye rummaged through the Qinxue mini supermarket with determination and miraculously found a few packs of small dried fish and a bar of cheap chocolate. Stuffing them into his vest pockets, Tang Ye headed towards the dormitory.
Tang Ye walked into Ning Yu’er’s dorm without knocking. Thinking it was a zombie entering, Ning Yu’er shrunk back in fear.
The dorm was pitch black, and Tang Ye instinctively reached for the light switch, but since the power had been cut off, it didn’t turn on. Tang Ye was helpless, but whether the lights were on or off, it made no difference. After becoming a zombie, he could see in the dark.
Looking around, he spotted Ning Yu’er curled up in the corner. However, she didn’t have his night vision, she could only see a tall and strong figure in the darkness. Feeling fearful, she didn’t dare to confirm if it was Tang Ye until she nervously asked, "Mr. Zombie... is that you?"
Her voice was very small and had a pitiful tone that provoked both the desire to comfort and protect her and the urge to ravage her recklessly.
Tang Ye pulled out a bar of cheap chocolate from his pocket and threw it at her. He originally intended to give her everything he had found, but some kind of base human instinct made him reluctant, feeling that his ration was insufficient.
After all, scarcity adds value!
