Chapter 24: Chapter 24 Ordinary Person_1

Tang Ye looked at the black cloth and was filled with a burst of rage. At a first glance, it seemed familiar, but the four characters "Longtang Window Company" on it immediately reminded him of who it belonged to!

It was that damn diminutive, green-faced speed zombie!

Its uniform had the company’s name printed on it. Tang Ye was confused. He had locked the community gate; how did this zombie get in?

After killing the zombie that Hu Yayun turned into with his crowbar, he picked up her and Lanlan’s bodies and carried them away. While walking down the corridor, he specifically checked the surroundings but couldn’t find any other access points.

The bloodstains on the ground were still fresh, suggesting that this had happened recently. The speed zombie probably hadn’t gone far, but Tang Ye didn’t know where to start looking for it in order to avenge Lanlan and her mother.

All he could do now was to bury them properly and avoid leaving their bodies exposed.

Tang Ye carried the two bodies downstairs, found a rusted spade with a broken corner, dug out two pits in a flower bed, and buried their bodies in them.

"I’m sorry; I will avenge you!"

Tang Ye placed the food he had just brought back on their graves as offerings and then left the community after staying there for a while.

Walking alone in the street, Tang Ye felt particularly empty inside after Lanlan and her mother’s deaths. He didn’t even know what to do next. Perhaps he should actively hunt down that damn verdant zombie, but where? It was not like he could run around randomly in search of it. Tang Ye racked his brains but couldn’t figure out how it got inside the community!

Zombies kept passing by him, annoying Tang Ye and sparking a fierce light in his eyes.

"Go to hell!"

He suddenly waved his zombie-blood-stained crowbar violently at a zombie, smashing its head with a burst of tremendous power.

After venting his anger through this vigorous attack, Tang Ye felt deflated. What was the point? Was it just helpless anger? Unloading his anger on zombies weaker than him who couldn’t fight back?

Tang Ye couldn’t help but wonder what would happen if he actually found the dwarf zombie. It was so fast; could he even catch it? If it fought back, could he actually defeat it? Just its speed alone was enough to leave Tang Ye in the dust! It was the same with the previous giant zombie!

Since he couldn’t, then he should become stronger, evolve—into a superior zombie!

Tang Ye sensed the energy within his body. He wasn’t sure if he was considered an evolved zombie, on par with the dwarf zombie or the giant zombie, but if he were to fight one of them, even five of him would be no match.

Was there a specific prerequisite to become a zombie like that? Do they have to eat humans?

Tang Ye shook his head. If that were the case, why would his nails evolve to retract freely?

"Eat, then. Eat until the results are clear! I refuse to believe I can’t evolve!" With that, Tang Ye stretched out his hand, scooped the brain out of the zombie he had just killed, and tossed it into his mouth!

Then he headed towards the other zombies. He had some doubts. Zombies were once humans; was there any difference between eating zombies and eating humans? Even though this was his line of thought, Tang Ye was once a commoner too. Eating humans was a moral boundary he didn’t want to cross.

No matter what, eating zombies was less guilt-inducing than eating humans!

Groan! Groan! Heh, heh!

Tang Ye stuffed a zombie’s brain into his mouth then noticed a swarm of disturbed zombies attracted by a young couple running for their lives.

Tang Ye glanced at the couple, guessing that they were searching for food due to scarcity, but unfortunately, they were spotted by the zombies.

The young man was running desperately, holding an iron pole as a weapon. The girl was behind him, but she lacked his stamina. Her face reddened as she ran, clearly struggling. She tried to hold his hand several times, but he didn’t even look at her. He just kept running!

The gap between them gradually widened until the girl couldn’t bear the burning sensation in her lungs anymore. Her pace involuntarily slowed down, and she was tackled to the ground by a zombie charging from the side, who bit into her neck. Blood gushed out like a fountain!

And the young man didn’t look back once; he turned a corner and headed towards an iron fence. He seemed confident, believing he could climb over it. But when he finally reached it, he realized his mistake—a mistake he couldn’t afford to make twice!

As soon as the boy stretched out his hands to hold the iron bars, a zombie grabbed him with a fierce hold and bit into his waist.

Ahh!

He let out a shrill scream and was immediately swamped by a frenzied swarm of zombies.

Tang Ye was observing all of this without any intention of helping. He toppled a running zombie with a swing, skillfully removed its brain, and tossed it into his mouth.

Indifferently, he glanced at the gruesome remains of the girl’s body, torn and mangled by the zombies, then continued looking for his next target.

Tang Ye’s heart had changed. From the first woman he encountered at the Wanhe Supermarket to Zheng Minghui, he hadn’t saved many, but the gratitude of the people he saved was not as heartfelt as he had anticipated. Perhaps he wanted some appreciation, but not much—a smile or a thank you would suffice.

But despite doing nothing, he was still attacked by some. Only the mother and daughter had fulfilled his expectations. Or rather, only Lanlan, who retained her innocence and kindness towards him even after knowing he was a monster. But what about her mother?

People’s prejudices could be as immovable as mountains, hard to overcome. Lanlan’s mother was grateful to him without knowing that he was a zombie. If she knew he was a zombie, would she turn against him? Therefore, Tang Ye was reluctant to save people as a zombie.

No one would persevere in doing something that offered no rewards. Tang Ye was not a saint or a great man, capable of embracing the world with an open heart. He was once just an average man, eking out a living at the bottom of society.

...

"Stop fighting, I’ll give you my share; please stop..." A beautiful young girl with delicate features pleaded anxiously with the five people squabbling for food in front of her.

"If you’re not going to eat it then give it to us sooner! Why were you hiding it in the first place? Get lost!" A girl her age snatched the pack of soda biscuits from her hands and yelled at her.

The girl felt wronged but didn’t say anything. Handing over her food did not calm down the quarreling group; they just got more chaotic, pulling at each other’s hair and coming to blows.
