Chapter 1041: Chapter 1037: Change of Residence 2
The viscous, dark green blood began to spread around, revealing a black egg from within. The next second, the egg cracked open, and a ferocious, multi-legged insect crawled out. At the moment the egg opened, the first thing it saw were Sun Wen’s wheat-colored, muscular arms.
Hiss, hiss, hiss~
With its mouth full of sharp teeth spread wide, the darkness inside seemed like a deep abyss that had no bottom, it hissed towards Sun Wen’s arm. But being so small, the noise it made was even finer than a mosquito’s to human ears, practically inaudible.
Quickly, the hair-raising legs began to move, heading swiftly towards Sun Wen’s arm.
When it jumped onto Sun Wen’s arm, he didn’t feel a thing, even when its jaws tore his flesh. It was fast, burrowing a hole through Sun Wen’s arm in less than a second, with bright red blood dripping onto the surrounding steel rebars.
Only when the raised tail spike cut a wound on Sun Wen’s arm did he feel the intense pain emanating from it.
"Oh!"
With a scream, his companions quickly looked over.
"Old Sun, what’s wrong?"
Sun Wen did not pay attention to his companion’s concern and lifted his arm to look. There was mysteriously a six-centimeter-long wound.
"What the hell!"
He hurriedly covered the wound, thankful that the new human’s self-healing ability was strong; the bleeding, which was only a little bit, soon stopped.
Looking at the rebar covered with his blood, Sun Wen thought he had accidentally cut himself on it and didn’t think much of it.
It was just that the strange pain in his arm made it feel somewhat numb.
"What the hell is this thing, this smell, ugh~" Seeing a large amount of pus and blood splattering from the hole, the scent wafting in the air was enough to upset anyone’s stomach, absolutely overwhelming.
"What are these?"
Someone noticed several insects the size of fingernails crawling out of the pools of pus and blood and asked in confusion.
"Definitely nothing good."
The person on the edge said, picking up a flamethrower, walked up to the hole, and fired directly into it.
The rolling flames surged forth, and those freshly hatched insects, which had not even seen the world yet, were scorched into curls by the hot flames; the disgusting, sticky pus and blood also blackened and solidified under the high temperature.
"There’s another one here."
At that moment, another person spotted yet another insect slowly creeping out. It was crawling back and forth, appearing very helpless. The soldier with the flamethrower stepped forward, prepared to stomp it to death, but was stopped by someone else.
"Wait a minute, let’s take a look."
Everyone gathered around, curiously observing this strange insect. Perhaps sensing living people approaching, the insect that was aimlessly crawling around suddenly became excited and rushed towards one of them.
But the people were cautious, though they did not know what harm the insect could do. What good could come from a creature that emerged from a ball of meat?
As the insect approached, a few of them immediately dodged, and the insect, unable to keep up with their reactions, could only helplessly hiss and chase after the closest person.
Seeing that the insect couldn’t catch up with them, the group’s playful mood surged. They hopped left and right, deliberately preventing the insect from getting close to them.
"Come on, come on, I’m over here."
"Right here, right here."
"Hey, can’t touch this."
"Hahaha~"
In about five or six minutes, just as people were beginning to get bored, the little insect chasing them suddenly stopped, its numerous legs gave out, and it collapsed on the ground, motionless.
"What’s wrong?"
"Dead."
"Judging by its characteristics, it seems to be some kind of parasite that dies if it doesn’t find a host within a certain period."
"Is that so."
A soldier was scanning the carcass of the bug with a scanner while incessantly poking it with a small stick in the other hand, leading to this conclusion.
"Who has a container?"
"I do."
"We need to take this bug back for research."
"Suit yourself, but make sure it’s really dead."
"It’s really dead, gentlemen. No need to worry."
Using tweezers to carefully pick up the carcass, the soldier touched his nose and said, "Let’s move, get out of here. There’s probably nothing left to find."
With that, the group of people left. Meanwhile, Sun Wen glanced at his watch
and said to the others, "Our time is almost up, we can head back."
"You go ahead."
"Alright, I’ll notify you when the next shift arrives."
"That would be great, we can have a proper celebration when we get back."
"Hahaha~"
The group burst into laughter, and then Sun Wen led the other three away from the team, while the remaining eight continued to search the surface for people and resources.
As the four traveled back the way they came, heading towards the entrance of the shelter, the vast streets were desolate with only them, echoing the bleakness in their hearts, just like the surrounding environment.
They were desperate to encounter other people on the surface, but to date, they hadn’t found a single person. This made them wonder if everyone on the surface had been wiped out. And what about the zombies?
Before entering the shelter, streets were teeming with zombies. Logically, upon their exit from the shelter, they should’ve been met with the endless hordes of the undead!
Yet, from three days ago to now, they had only encountered a single silver zombie. Other than that, not a trace. Where could the rest of the zombies have gone?
Before they knew it, they had arrived in front of a collapsed building next to a shopping mall. Before them was a heap of dense, evolved plants. They had not cleared these plants when they left, as the foliage concealed the shelter’s entrance behind the collapsed building.
"Let’s go, get inside."
After saying this, Sun Wen took the lead to push aside the evolved plants and crawled through. The interior was overgrown with weeds, with a window in front. Climbing through that window, they would find the shelter’s elevator.
However, as soon as Sun Wen and his group entered, their expressions suddenly turned to shock.
"Who are you? How did you find this place?"
The four swiftly raised their weapons, aiming ahead.
Standing on a pile of stones in front of the four was a man with a bulging backpack and a cap worn low on his head, such that they could only see his chin — perhaps a dubious habit of keeping his head down subconsciously.
"Someone from the surface?"
The man didn’t speak, staring at the four for a good while before finally lifting his finger towards the window and saying slowly, "Inside is the shelter, right?"
Sun Wen and his companions exchanged looks. For some reason, they felt that the tone of this man didn’t seem to belong to any good person.
