Chapter 1042: Chapter 1038: Change 3
Although that was the case, Sun Wen and the others still nodded, hardly expecting to encounter a surface dweller right at the entrance to the shelter. Regardless of whether the other party was friend or foe, with the considerable strength of the four of them, Sun Wen didn’t believe this strangely originating man could single-handedly take on the four of them.
After all, they were eager to learn about the situation above ground, to find out what had been happening there.
"Who are you? How did you find this place?"
Sun Wen asked, puzzled.
The man opposite them fell silent for a while, appearing to organize a suitable excuse, and soon, he said, "I saw people coming out here, so I came in."
"Is that so?"
The four were sure not to believe what the man said, but they also didn’t think he would necessarily tell the truth.
They saw the man’s face, only his chin visible beneath a duckbill cap, break into a smile, then he pointed at the window and asked, "May I come in?"
After thinking for a moment, Sun Wen signaled to the others with a glance, and immediately, they pounced on the man, pulling out the specialized handcuffs from the shelter that were used to constrain evolved beings, and quickly handcuffed the man’s hands. The man didn’t resist, and Sun Wen pinned him down by pressing his knee into the man’s back, holding him firmly to the ground.
"Stay calm," Sun Wen commanded sternly.
Surprisingly, the man obediently nodded, which pleased Sun Wen. It seemed that the other party was just an ordinary person, which was very reassuring.
"Is your name Lin Jie?" a soldier beside him asked, lifting the tag on the man’s waist and looking at it curiously. The tag, besides a line that read "A gift for Lin Jie," featured a bear head with a smiling face.
The supposed gift, however, was non-existent.
The man nodded again, affirming that was his name.
Sun Wen smiled, removing the man’s cap. Revealed was a very ordinary face, neither handsome nor ugly, simply one that at first glance appeared very common, without anything special, like someone you might randomly see on the street, destined neither for great achievements nor tragic downfalls, just one among the masses, a face that could be summed up with the word "ordinary."
It was filled with the nuances of life’s many faces.
Yet, this man’s face was the kind that one would remember at a glance, not the sort that would disappear into a crowd.
"It’s not that you can’t enter the shelter, but we can’t fully trust you until we have confirmed your identity," Sun Wen said matter of factly, handcuffing Lin Jie’s hands and handing him over to another person.
"Hmm." Lin Jie just nodded, not saying anything more, his demeanor further reassuring Sun Wen and the others.
"Let’s go."
With a wave of his hand, Sun Wen and his companions took Lin Jie through the window and walked to the right.
Coming out of the window, to the right was an up-and-down steel door with access control nearby, which was covered with a layer of purple moss.
But Sun Wen and his companions had no idea that this "ordinary person" named Lin Jie was an existence more dangerous than zombies!
Just so, under Lin Jie’s careful watch, Sun Wen came before the access control without using an access card, but directly entered a password. Lin Jie narrowed his eyes, the corners of his mouth curling into a barely perceptible smile.
The metal door hissed open, revealing a wide corridor. Sun Wen and the others, along with Lin Jie, walked in, rounding two bends, and finally arrived in front of a second metal door.
Just as before, Sun Wen entered a password, revealing a large elevator.
"Walk inside."
After giving Lin Jie a push, Sun Wen and his three companions no longer continued to escort him like a prisoner.
As the steel door closed, a blue light illuminated above the elevator and it began to slowly descend.
At that moment, one of the soldiers glanced at Lin Jie’s backpack and without any warning, reached out and took it off Lin Jie’s back.
"What’s inside it that makes it so heavy?"
The soldier weighed Lin Jie’s backpack and found it remarkably heavy, at least more than ten kilograms. Although such weight was trivial for the modified humans, it would be burdensome for an ordinary person, yet Lin Jie seemed unaffected, not showing any signs of it on his face or breath.
Without waiting for Lin Jie to speak, the soldier unzipped the backpack and the contents were exposed.
"What is this?"
Seeing the contents of the backpack, both the soldier and Sun Wen’s group looked puzzled. The backpack was filled with objects resembling cicadas, slightly bigger than a pigeon’s egg.
The front end was crafted from black metal, resembling the head of a cicada with four extremely sharp appendages. The black part made up less than a tenth of it, while the rest was made of glass, oval-shaped, and hollow inside, probably meant to hold something.
Lin Jie glanced at it, a hint of murderous intent flashing deep in his eyes.
"It’s nothing, just an ’extractor’."
"Extractor? What kind of extractor looks like this?"
The soldier shook the so-called extractor in front of Lin Jie, left and right. What a ridiculous extractor, they had seen many things in the shelter but never an extractor like this.
Extractors shaped like insects were impractical to use; however, neither Sun Wen nor his team disliked it. Once they reached the surface, it would be great to decorate their rooms with it.
Thus, each of them took one, and Lin Jie’s backpack potentially had hundreds!
The four seemed to be in a good mood, but once they found out what these insect-shaped "extractors" really were, Lin Jie believed they would immediately throw them away!
And also destroy any remaining "extractors"!
While the four were fiddling with the extractors in their hands, Lin Jie suddenly asked, "How much longer until we arrive?"
Sun Wen glanced at him and slowly replied, "We’re three kilometers from the surface; at this speed, we’ll arrive in just over half an hour, so just wait."
"Oh."
With that response, Lin Jie fell silent and patiently waited.
Half an hour passed quickly, and soon, Lin Jie felt the elevator’s descent slowing down. He understood they were almost at the shelter, his eyes lit up, and a smile of excitement appeared on Lin Jie’s face. But soon, as if recalling something, his expression soured again.
Ding!
Following a sharp ringing sound, the elevator came to a halt and a steel door appeared in front of them. Lin Jie looked at Sun Wen, expecting him to type in a password to open the elevator door.
However, much to Lin Jie’s disappointment, Sun Wen didn’t move to act, but the steel door opened on its own. Immediately after, Lin Jie smelled an air different from that on the surface; the air here seemed somewhat murky.
