Chapter 1040: Chapter 1036: Alienation 1
"What now!" Sun Wen was getting impatient. He had just pulled out a cigarette to take a hit and refresh his spirits when yet another task cropped up. Aimless searching like this, even though it wasn’t tiring for him as a new human class, was incredibly irritating to him mentally.
But it was only a mutter. Sun Wen still stood up, rolled up his sleeves and followed the others towards the place their companion had spotted.
Upon reaching the alley, they indeed saw a vehicle parked at the end, about ten or more meters away from them. Since they had been dispatched by the refuge to survey the surface conditions, naturally, each one of them was a new human class and also part of the refuge’s high-end combat force. They could clearly see the green pickup truck parked opposite the entrance of the alley.
Judging by the car’s body, it was very clean, evidently tended to frequently. And this vehicle greatly boosted their spirits.
"Let’s go, take a look. There might be people there."
"Be careful. The people on the surface might not be too friendly."
"Got it."
Sun Wen called out and, with his gun at the ready, cautiously approached the other side of the alley with his companions, each step breaking twigs on the ground with a "crack and crunch."
"Keep it down. What if we’re noticed by someone inside?" someone couldn’t help but remind.
They themselves held no ill will, merely wanting to see how people on the surface were faring now, but everyone knew that human nature was what failed the most in the early Apocalypse. For intruders, the instinctive response was to pick up arms and drive them away.
And they didn’t want hostilities at first sight; they were just looking for a new home.
However, after quite a while, as all of them reached the entrance of the alley, they saw no one, only the pickup truck parked there, lonely and unattended.
"No one?"
"What’s this?"
People looked around, and it was the same desolate scene they had seen before, completely lifeless. The only oddity was the bags of flour stacked on the pickup truck. Upon tearing one open, they found it all to be moldy.
Another soldier also discovered a strange substance packed in a clear bag placed at the door of a small bungalow.
Suddenly, everyone gathered around, curious about this package. The contents resembled the bait that fishermen mix with water, a pale yellow color. The light shined into the bungalow, revealing particles of dust floating in the air – it was clear no one had cleaned inside for a long time. Perhaps no one lived there at all. Aside from these signs, they also noticed distinct footprints on the ground.
"Scan it, what exactly is this?"
Someone took out a cylindrical device, and a blue light emerged from one end. With an operation of the device, the blue light scanned the pale yellow substance from top to bottom, and the device’s small screen rapidly displayed some data.
"The main ingredients are soy protein isolate, starch, acetic anhydride, and lactic acid, among others."
"Does this mean... it’s edible?"
"It should be."
The group wore baffled expressions. Was this food? They hadn’t seen such food since setting out, but the scanner never lies. If it was just these ingredients, then indeed, it could be edible.
"Move aside, let me try it." Someone quickly volunteered to be the guinea pig, rushing forward to grab the unidentified food. They picked up a bit with their fingers and threw it into their mouth.
The taste was strange, indescribable as they had never eaten this substance before. It was sour and sweet, free from other abnormal tastes. Overall, it was truly consumable.
With one person having tried it, the rest were aroused by curiosity and came up to taste it as well.
"This must be food from a survivor on the surface, it looks like the packaging was recently torn open, it’s still fresh."
"So does that mean someone was here before?"
"Must have been, look at those footprints, and the dust on the car, it’s very possible someone was preparing to load these things onto the vehicle."
"But where are they now? What were they doing with all this flour? Just look at how moldy it’s gotten."
"Let’s not worry about that for now, let’s go inside and take a look."
Someone interrupted the speaker and pointed towards the inside of the small bungalow, everyone around nodded. They followed Sun Wen towards the little house.
The windows were sealed tight with wooden boards, not letting a single ray of sunlight through, and besides the blackened spider webs in the corners were piles of coal, very damp.
From all this, it was easy to guess that in the early Apocalypse, a survivor had stored a large amount of flour in the bungalow and had sealed the windows to prevent zombies from discovering; only, for some unknown reason, the original owner was no longer there.
"It’s pitch dark, who the hell lives here?"
Muttering, Sun Wen raised his gun and shot at the boarded-up windows. The bullets easily pierced the rotten wood, and soon, the boards were shot and exploded open, falling off their nails. At that moment, sunlight finally shone inside.
In the quiet surroundings, the bursts of gunfire were jarring, creating a stark contrast with the silence, sounding loud to the ears and increasing people’s anxiety involuntarily.
"It’s all flour."
"Nothing else?"
"Come take a look, what a waste; someone had the talent to gather all this flour, and it’s all gone to waste."
As a few people went in, they saw the massive amount of severely moldy flour and couldn’t help but feel distressed; if it had been fresh, it could have fed the people in the shelter for half a year.
"Oh my god, what the hell is that, look inside."
"What is that?"
Quickly, the group noticed a hole nearby, and within that hole, there was something hanging from the ceiling, a flesh ball covered with white threads.
At a glance, this thing appeared to be nothing good, and the exterior of the flesh ball was gross enough to disgust these folks who had hidden in a shelter for seven years.
"Damn it, looks like a cockroach egg."
Sun Wen was the first to be put off and raised his gun to shoot at the flesh ball within the hole, the others also followed suit, barraging the flesh ball with bullets.
Stones kept splashing from around the hole as the bullets pierced the flesh ball, opening small holes, and black-yellow viscous blood dripped towards the ground in threads. Under the continuous gunfire, in just a few seconds, the flesh ball suddenly exploded, opening up like a flower, a foul smell hit them, and dark green mixed with black-yellow pus-blood splattered in all directions. Fortunately, the group were all quick to react, darting to the sides immediately, avoiding the disgusting pus-blood from splashing onto themselves.
But Sun Wen didn’t see that next to him, a glob of pus-blood flew right onto the exposed stone brick around the hole.
