Chapter 222: A Mysterious Call
Chapter:
---
The chilling silence in the house weighed heavily on Adam as he stood near the lifeless family.
His violet eyes scanned the room, sharp yet clouded with a mixture of sadness and suspicion.
Adam circled the dining table, scrutinizing each member of the family.
No visible wounds, no signs of struggle—only the eerie white glaze over their eyes and their unnaturally still bodies.
He clenched his fists. Whoever did this must be a Power Holder capable of killing without even touching their victims, he thought.
This notion filled him with unease as he tried to piece together the grim puzzle.
Breaking the silence, Adam turned to Ninja, who stood guard nearby, his hand resting on the hilt of his katana. "Search the entire house," Adam ordered, his tone calm but firm.
Without hesitation, Ninja bowed his head in acknowledgment and darted towards the other rooms, his movements swift and purposeful.
As Ninja disappeared into the dimly lit hallways, Adam closed his eyes and took a deep breath.
He reached out with his heightened senses, trying to detect any lingering presence in the house. The air was cold, heavy with death, but there was no trace of the perpetrator.
Minutes passed. Adam opened his eyes and let out a frustrated sigh. Nothing, he thought.
Soon, Ninja returned, descending the stairs with a measured but defeated expression. "Lord Adam," he said, bowing slightly, "I found nothing. There are no signs of anyone else here."
Adam nodded, unfazed. He had expected this outcome. Whatever had killed the family had left no trail, no clue to its nature or origin.
Suddenly, a familiar telepathic voice echoed in Adam’s mind—it was Pratham. "Lord Adam, we’ve detected another Power Holder," the voice informed him.
Adam straightened immediately, his eyes narrowing. "What’s their condition?" he asked aloud.
Before Pratham could answer, Adam turned his focus to Sona through their telepathic connection. "Sona," he commanded, "check on the new Power Holder immediately. Ensure they’re safe."
"Understood, Lord Adam," came Sona’s swift reply.
The scene shifted to Sona, who was soaring silently over a quiet neighborhood, the cool night breeze brushing against her golden wings.
Her ethereal glow illuminated the rooftops as she made her way toward the location of the detected Power Holder.
Upon receiving Adam’s telepathic message, Sona quickly descended and teleported into the designated house.
The moment she materialized inside, a sharp gasp escaped her lips. The room was dimly lit, but she could clearly see the small figure of a young girl lying motionless on her bed.
Sona cautiously approached, her golden wings casting a faint, comforting glow over the child.
The girl’s lifeless body was cold to the touch, her skin unnaturally pale. Most chilling of all were her eyes—glazed over in the same ghostly white as the family Adam had just encountered.
Sona’s heart sank. She took a deep breath to steady herself and immediately reached out to Adam through their telepathic link.
"Lord Adam," she reported, her voice tinged with sorrow and urgency, "this Power Holder has been killed. Her eyes are white, and her body is ice cold. It feels as though her entire body has been frozen solid."
Back at the first house, Adam stood motionless, absorbing Sona’s message. A deep frown etched itself onto his face as his worst fears began to materialize.
This was no isolated incident—someone, or something, was systematically targeting Power Holders.
Without wasting a moment, Adam reached out telepathically to all his allies. "Everyone," his voice echoed in their minds, firm and resolute, "assemble immediately at my location. This is urgent."
His command was met with immediate responses. In seconds, Pratham and Ninja materialized beside Adam, their expressions reflecting a mix of readiness and concern.
The room was quiet, the tension palpable as Adam reappeared with his team.
Sona, Tayo, Ninja, and Zero materialized around him, their expressions laced with concern.
On the computer screen, the digital avatars of Pratham and Mikasa flickered into view, their glowing forms a stark contrast to the dimly lit room.
Adam scanned his team, his voice cutting through the silence. "Every Power Holder in the city is in danger. I need a detailed report—now."
Pratham and Mikasa exchanged brief glances before nodding. "Understood, Lord Adam," Mikasa replied, her voice steady. With that, their digital forms blinked out of existence as they dove into their assigned task.
Adam’s gaze shifted to Zero, who knelt before him in unwavering loyalty. "Zero," Adam began, his tone commanding yet calm, "I need you to build as many surveillance devices as possible, and quickly."
Zero lowered his head in acknowledgment. "I won’t disappoint you, Lord Adam. I’ll get started immediately." In a blink, he teleported out of the room, his determination evident in his sharp, calculated movements.
Adam turned to Sona and Tayo. His violet eyes reflected the weight of the responsibility he carried.
"Sona, Tayo—you two will stay together. Your safety is paramount. We don’t know the extent of our enemy’s power, and if they’re targeting other Power Holders, you could be next."
Both nodded in unison, their expressions resolute. Without another word, they vanished, their departure marked by a faint golden glow left in their wake.
Next, Adam’s focus shifted to Ninja. The silent warrior knelt with one hand resting on his katana, waiting for orders. "Ninja,"
Adam said, his voice firm, "go to Zero. Stay with him. If the enemy strikes again, I want someone with heightened senses by his side."
Ninja’s head dipped slightly in acknowledgment. "Understood, Lord Adam," he replied. Within moments, he, too, disappeared.
The room was empty now, save for Adam and the faint hum of the computer screen.
Adam let out a breath, his hand reaching for his phone. He was about to dial Leo’s number when the device vibrated in his hand. A call. The number on the screen was unfamiliar.
Adam frowned, his instincts immediately on high alert. He hesitated briefly before answering.
Bringing the phone to his ear, he said nothing, opting to let the other side speak first.
For several seconds, there was silence. Adam’s pulse quickened. Then, a voice broke through—a man’s voice, calm yet unsettling.
"No matter how hard you try, Mr. Adam," the voice said, "you won’t be able to save them."
The words sent a chill down Adam’s spine. He didn’t recognize the voice, but its tone carried an unnerving familiarity, as though the speaker knew him far too well.
"Who are you?" Adam demanded, his voice sharp. "And why are you killing the Power Holders?"
There was another pause, the silence stretching taut between them. Finally, the man spoke again, his tone almost mocking.
"Who said I’m killing them?"
Adam’s grip on the phone tightened. He didn’t trust the man’s words, his gut telling him there was more to the story. "Then what are you doing?" Adam asked, suspicion lacing his voice. "If you’re not killing them, who is?"
The man chuckled lightly. "I haven’t killed anyone," he said. "I’ve only taken their powers. They didn’t deserve them."
The statement hit Adam like a thunderbolt. His eyes widened, his breath catching for a moment. "You... you’re stealing their powers?"
The line went silent again, but this time, Adam didn’t press. His mind raced with questions, scenarios, and a growing sense of urgency.
And with that, the call ended, leaving Adam alone in the dimly lit room, his thoughts a maelstrom of confusion and dread.
