Chapter 111: Retribution and Resolve
The air outside the mall was heavy, not with the usual hum of shoppers, but a chilling tension that gripped everyone in its icy grasp.
Ani stood trembling, her tear-streaked face illuminated by the flickering lights overhead. Her phone still in her shaking hands, she had just made the desperate call.
On the other side, Adam’s voice had been calm yet firm, a stark contrast to her panic.
"Where are you, Ani?" Adam’s voice carried a controlled urgency that sent a wave of hope through her.
"The city mall," she managed to stammer, her sobs choking her words.
"Stay there," Adam commanded, cutting the call abruptly.
Ani stared at the darkened screen of her phone, confusion etched across her face. How would Adam get here so quickly? she wondered, panic and doubt gnawing at her mind.
Nearby, Zora, the self-proclaimed ruler of this chaotic scene, let out a mocking laugh. His dark eyes gleamed with cruel amusement as he watched Ani’s vulnerability.
"I thought he would at least try to comfort you over the phone," he jeered, his voice dripping with derision. "But it seems even he couldn’t handle your tears. How pitiful."
Zora turned his attention back to Ani’s sister, who was still pinned under his gravitational force. "Now," he hissed, his hand extending towards her. "Let’s finish what I started."
But before he could unleash his power, a force, unseen but immense, slammed into him.
This invisible force feels like a huge hammer of his size hitting his body, pushing him backwards very fast.
It was as if an invisible hand had yanked him away, flinging him across the mall like a ragdoll.
Zora moves backwards very fast and bounces on the ground two or three times before crashing into a wall.
He crashed into a distant wall with a deafening impact, his body slumping to the floor amidst the debris.
The crowd collectively gasped, their fear giving way to stunned silence.
Ani, too, was frozen, her wide eyes darting to the source of this sudden intervention.
Ani feels someone standing behind her,
Standing behind her, clad entirely in black with a mask obscuring his face, was Adam.
His presence exuded a cold, almost otherworldly menace. Ani turned slowly, her breath hitching as recognition dawned.
"Adam..." she whispered, her voice trembling.
Ani gets more emotional after seeing Adam and tears start falling from her eyes, just like a child cries after seeing his mother after getting hurt, she also starts crying after seeing Adam.
Kneeling before her, Adam gently wiped the tears from her cheeks with the back of his gloved hand. His voice was soft yet unyielding. "Don’t cry anymore. I’m here now."
---
Zora groaned as he struggled to his feet, blood trickling from the corner of his mouth.
His mind raced, replaying the moment he was struck. What was that? He hadn’t seen anything, but the force had been undeniable.
His eyes darted to the cracks splintering across the wall behind him, a testament to the power of the attack.
If he had not reduced the impact with his gravitational force at that moment, two or three bones of Zora would have broken by now.
His gaze shifted to the figure now standing protectively beside Ani.
The masked man exuded a quiet, terrifying authority. Zora’s heart sank as realization hit him. Another power holder.
For the first time in a long while, Zora felt fear. The government and police no longer intimidated him, but the presence of another like him was a threat he couldn’t dismiss.
Still, he forced a smirk, masking his unease. Pulling out his phone discreetly, he sent a quick message before slipping it back into his pocket.
Gathering his composure, Zora began to walk towards Ani and Adam. "So," he drawled, feigning confidence, "you must be the great protector she called for. What’s your plan? Save the damsel in distress and walk away like a hero?"
Adam ignored him, his focus shifting to Ani’s sister, who was slowly trying to sit up despite her injuries.
Blood seeped from a gash on her forehead. Adam retrieved a handkerchief from his pocket, handing it to her with a quiet, "Press this against your wound."
Ani’s sister hesitated, staring at the masked figure with suspicion. "You’re like him, aren’t you?" she asked, her voice tinged with both fear and defiance. "A power holder."
"I’m deal with him, but before that I have one more thing to do first" Adam says looking at Ani’s older sister.
Adam didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he turned his attention to Zora, his voice steady. "You’ve hurt them enough."
Zora’s smirk faltered. The weight of Adam’s words carried a promise of retribution.
Ani runs from behind and comes to her sister’s side, Adam is also standing there.
But before Zora could respond, Adam placed a hand on Ani’s shoulder and another on her sister’s arm.
"You’ll be safe now," he said softly.
The next moment, Ani and her sister vanished, leaving behind only a faint shimmer in the air.
---
Ani blinked as she found herself suddenly inside her own bedroom.
Her sister was beside her, clutching the bloodied handkerchief. "What just happened?" Ani whispered, her voice laced with disbelief.
She looks at Adam and about to asks him what is going on,
But before either could process what had occurred, Adam was gone again, teleported back to the mall.
---
Zora stood motionless, his mind racing. He had seen many things in his life, but teleportation was not one of them.
His smirk returned, though weaker this time. "Impressive," he admitted, clapping his hands slowly. "But do you really think you can scare me?"
Adam reappeared in the mall, his dark figure cutting through the dim light like a shadow given life. He stood silently, his posture relaxed but his presence radiating an unspoken threat.
Zora’s bravado faltered. He had always prided himself on being untouchable, but this...this was different. Still, he forced himself to laugh. "What now? Going to play the silent hero?"
Adam didn’t respond. Instead, he began to walk towards Zora with deliberate, measured steps. Each step echoed ominously through the mall, sending shivers down the spines of the onlookers.
Zora clenched his fists, his powers surging as he prepared to attack. But deep down, he knew the truth: for the first time, he was outmatched.
And as Adam closed the distance between them, Zora realized that his reign of terror was about to come to an end.
