Chapter 52 - 51: Mud Man Summoning

Chapter 52: Chapter 51: Mud Man Summoning

Among this group of refugees, there were also a small number of local residents. Watching their spirited fervor, Wei Tianyang thought to himself that even if they wanted to join Li Fei’s New Liberation Front, they shouldn’t be so careless as to say it out loud, right?

Weren’t they afraid of being overheard by the conservative forces’ official army?

Moreover, with just a prompt from Kacha, they blurted it out so freely—it was rather bold of them. What if they ran into the local plainclothes security officers? Wouldn’t they be arrested and skinned alive?

After the group of refugees left, it was time for Wei Tianyang and his companions to take action. Staying in the urban area even for a moment was mainly to pick up the coffee beans pre-ordered from Starbucks—apparently, for her, nothing was more important than coffee.

After stuffing the coffee beans into the trunk of the car, the driver drove them out of the city area.

Leaving the city behind, signs of human creation gradually disappeared. Apart from the uneven dirt road and the occasional sight of a telephone pole, there were no other traces of human civilization, with the view increasingly overtaken by dense wilderness.

Kacha and Starbucks began checking their weapons inside the car.

The division of labor for their weaponry was clear: Kacha used a 90-type rifle with a folding stock because his ability required close-range use, so he took the vanguard.

Starbucks, on the other hand, used a model with an extended barrel for long-distance precision shooting support, while also using her superpower to lock the enemy’s firearms.

Wei Tianyang’s 90-type rifle was unmodified, but he was carrying the bomb, which was the core of the entire operation.

Obviously, this was arranged by Yaha.

Perhaps, in Yaha’s mind, only Wei Tianyang was capable of protecting the bomb, and the other two were just his assistants.

In reality, the 90-type rifle didn’t mean much in Wei Tianyang’s hands. If he had to use a gun, he would still choose the AK47 hidden inside his right arm—it was more convenient and more covert.

Two hours later, the car reached a vast highland. This place was a spacious clearing within the forested countryside, with only the sound of the wind howling and the wilderness swinging with its gusts.

After disembarking, the driver took the car down from the highland and hid it in the depths of the forest. The three of them then walked to the edge of the clearing.

Wei Tianyang overlooked the forest sea before him. In that dark green ocean, he saw white and red factory buildings sporadically visible, resembling sharks that emerged from the sea, revealing their fins.

Starbucks told him that it was Tiantai Pharmaceutical’s factory, which was used to temporarily transfer the Medicine People.

Before the civil war broke out, it was Kongse’s largest OEM factory, providing twenty to thirty thousand jobs for the small town, making toys for Sethiyan Corporation, including dolls and Transformers toys.

However, now the place was deserted—the workers had all been conscripted, sent to fill the lines at Qiyang and Linjiang, and the factory’s equipment had been sold off by the local government for personal gain.

Wei Tianyang closed his eyes and sniffed at the dry air. The interwoven network of scents from different directions made it hard for him to distinguish. He smelled the bitter odor of medicines, disinfectants, rust, human waste, and blood...

At that moment, Kacha called out to him and tossed him a bulletproof vest.

"Put it on," Kacha said.

"Got any plan?" Wei Tianyang asked as he picked up the bulletproof vest.

"We’ll wait for nightfall and then sneak in to plant the bomb," Starbucks chimed in at that moment.

"What about the refugees inside?" Wei Tianyang asked again.

"We’ll see. If there’s too many of them, we’ll have to forego the rescue. We’re only three people—we can’t take on the entire guard force of the factory," Starbucks said.

"That’s not what we agreed on at the start," Wei Tianyang shook his head.

"Our primary goal is to get revenge on Tiantai Pharmaceutical, not play the hero. And realistically, if there are only three or five refugees, we can certainly rescue them. But what if there are thirty or fifty?" Starbucks argued.

Seeing Wei Tianyang’s displeased expression, Kacha quickly stepped forward to persuade him, "Starbucks is right. The three of us can’t quietly and quickly transfer a large number of refugees. Rescuing them is a secondary option."

"How are we any different from terrorists then?" Wei Tianyang challenged.

"There’s no real difference," Starbucks replied while she took off her shirt, revealing a tank top underneath. After donning the bulletproof vest, she tied her long hair into a ponytail, her exposed arms showing smooth muscle lines.

"We must rescue all of them, save as many as we can. Otherwise, I won’t set the bomb," Wei Tianyang said gravely.

"The terrain of that factory is very complex, and we haven’t scouted it in advance. We also don’t know how many armed guards are inside. Sneaking in to plant a bomb would be easy, but rescuing people is much more complicated. Ishmael, there are several times more enemies here than last time; we can’t escape like we did then," Starbucks said with a furrowed brow.

"We’ll leave at night. You guys go rescue the people, and I will plant the bomb. If you get discovered, I’ll expose myself to draw their gunfire," Wei Tianyang said.

"And then?" Kacha asked worriedly.

"Then I will kill them all," Wei Tianyang declared.

Starbucks shook his head helplessly.

The three of them hunkered down on the high ground, Starbucks adjusting his scope while Kacha pulled out a novel to read.

Waiting from afternoon until deep into the night was a torment for Wei Tianyang. In the meantime, the trucks that went to pick up people from the pig farm continuously returned to the factory, obviously empty-handed. After all, Wei Tianyang had rescued all the refugees from the camp the previous night.

Bored, he paced the empty ground, now looking at the pale sky, now gazing into the distant forest sea, now sitting cross-legged on the ground, recalling all he had experienced before.

Just as he was listless, he noticed a white light emanating from beneath Kacha’s buttocks.

The light was very faint, naturally white in color, and indeed not easy to detect under the afternoon sunlight around two or three o’clock. But Kacha happened to sit on it, and the light, hitting the green gathered-leg military pants, was barely visible.

What was that?

Wei Tianyang walked over and carefully observed, which caused Kacha to look back in surprise. Kacha turned his head to look behind him, then down at the ground where he had been sitting, but noticed nothing unusual.

"What’s up?" Kacha asked.

When Kacha stood up, Wei Tianyang saw a line of characters similar to Western alphabets embedded in the ground, emitting a white light. The light was weak, like that of a flashlight running low on battery.

Kacha also looked at the ground, but didn’t see anything unusual. Seeing Wei Tianyang pensively staring at the bare, muddy ground, he recalled how the night before, Wei Tianyang had squatted down and traced on the floor with his finger, worrying that his Black Medicine symptoms were flaring up again.

"Ishmael? Are you feeling... unwell again?" Kacha asked, while reaching for an antidote.

Wei Tianyang pressed Kacha’s hand down and shook his head.

He touched the characters on the ground, and in an instant, the surroundings became very quiet. The daylight dimmed, the cold wind stilled, and a faint, sweet, and foul odor wafted through the air.

Kacha and Starbucks had disappeared. He was still on this highland, but the scenery around him had drastically changed. The ground was no longer made of dirt; it was indescribable and of a warm purple chitin, making a crunchy sound when stepped upon, very eerie.

Above the ink-blue sky, stars were enveloped by a river of fire, flowing slowly like a sandy band of light. The massive moon was cracked, entwined by that band of light, emitting a faint white glow. Behind the light... a black sphere was moving...

He had seen this scene before when he had just escaped from Zero Nine One Reception Station.

Below the highland was a vast wasteland made of deep purple chitin structures, with no trees, but the factory ruins were still there.

Wei Tianyang slowly got up and suddenly noticed, at the edge of the highland, a Mud Man sitting there.

The fellow was plump, its entire body caked with a thick layer of mud, with a big belly that was either due to its body shape or deliberately accumulated mud. At a glance, it looked like a round lump of clay, easy to be overlooked.

A monster?

Fuck, are there really monsters in this world?!

This was the first time Wei Tianyang encountered such a situation, and for a moment he didn’t know what to do. At the same time, a slight sense of panic started to seep into his consciousness, causing an inexplicable pain in his heart.

He crouched down like a startled fox, instinctively trying to reduce his target area and preparing to pounce with all his might, his right fist clenched tightly.

However, at this moment, the lump of mud started talking.

"Oh, hey, haha... after waiting so long, finally someone has answered the summoning. I was almost at the end of my wick," the Mud Man said cheerfully.
