Chapter 53: 52 Chapters Objective Reality
Wei Tianyang was startled. The other party was speaking Chicken Snake language, but it was quite obvious that he wasn’t fluent, his accent strange. He definitely wasn’t one of the Chicken Snake People.
"Your gear is pretty rudimentary. Given that, your ability must be really strong," Mud Man said.
Wei Tianyang hadn’t let down his guard yet; he didn’t know where he was, and he was uncertain about who the other person was.
But Mud Man seemed very friendly. The clumps of mud on his head gradually dispersed as if invisible hands were pulling them apart and then dropped to the ground.
Behind those clumps of mud was a dark face.
Wei Tianyang took a careful look: a black man in his thirties with a broad, flat nose and a not-too-bright smile on his face.
"Code name, Mud Man. What about you?" Mud Man said.
Behind him, a large mass of mud floated up, slowly peeling away to reveal a sci-fi styled personal light machine gun encased within.
The gun’s barrel was short, with the stock folded, and the drum magazine was a round canister with no visible bullet chain.
Mud Man’s right-arm mud also peeled away, revealing sandy camo fatigues and cut-resistant gloves. He picked up the gun, and the floating mud reattached itself to him, fusing the gun and his right hand into one, crudely resembling a large, growth-like appendage on his right arm.
"Code name..." Wei Tianyang instinctively started to say Ishmael but then realized something far more serious.
This Mud Man might be from the Superpower Special Department.
"You look like a rookie, eh? Just enlisted?" Mud Man chuckled.
Wei Tianyang nodded, going with the flow.
"Really a rookie, then you definitely don’t know where this place is, right?" Mud Man said.
"Did you leave that mark?" Wei Tianyang asked.
Mud Man nodded.
He continued, "This here is the backside of the world. Only those injected with Black Medicine from the Superpower Special Department can enter. We call it ’Objective Reality.’"
"This is our secret, exclusive to us. We must be loyal to our nation, but we must never reveal anything about Objective Reality to others. This is the consensus among our kind."
"The world as perceived by human senses, which is the reality we live in, is referred to as ’Subjective Reality.’"
Hearing this, Wei Tianyang felt confused and said, "Wait a minute! That’s not right! Could it be... that this place is the true face of the world?"
"Not quite... after all, I am just a soldier, not a scientist. But this terminology comes from the first generation of the Superpower Special Department," Mud Man shrugged.
"First generation..."
"That’s right. Seeing your age, you must belong to the latest, the sixth generation of special forces. I’d roughly count myself as from the early fifth generation."
These few sentences, packed with a tremendous amount of information, assailed Wei Tianyang’s worldview. Because it was so illogical, he didn’t even find it surprising anymore.
"Members of the Superpower Special Department gain strength and new sensory abilities through the injection of Black Medicine: hyper-sensory perception. This ability allows one to momentarily transition into Objective Reality, free from the constraints of time and space. This mark allows us to summon each other across time. By the way, do you know the date?" Mud Man said.
"The date... Today is November 17th," Wei Tianyang said.
"Then we can’t meet in reality. Although I am also on this high ground in Subjective Reality, I left this mark back on October 9th," Mud Man said.
"Last month? What... what’s the principle behind this?" Wei Tianyang exclaimed.
"This is the difference between Objective and Subjective Reality. I don’t know all the principles either, but the law is such that members of the Superpower Special Department can leave marks to summon teammates. Here, we can’t hurt each other, but there are basic rules to follow."
"Summoning marks can be erased by oneself. They will also fade if left unattended for a long time, or if the person who left the mark dies, or after leaving Objective Reality. Those without hyper-sensory abilities cannot see the marks."
"Furthermore, you can only summon people from the present or a specific future timeframe. The past won’t work, not even a few minutes ago; neither will far into the future. The time difference between you and me might already be at its limit."
"It’s really... magical..."
Wei Tianyang had relaxed a bit, gripping his Type 90 rifle as he looked up to the sky, excitement and curiosity sparkling in his red eyes. What he once perceived as a terrifying spectacle—the blood-red cosmos and the moon plummeting into it—now seemed incredibly magnificent.
The Mud Man sighed and continued,
"I was shocked when I first got here, but then I got used to it. Maybe a million years ago, when humans were still upright apes, the sky looked just like this."
"It looks too ominous, gives you goosebumps, and rattles your nerves. But, I have to say, it’s beautiful. It’s mesmerizing—you just want to keep watching," Wei Tianyang said.
"Rather than looking up at the sky, we should pay more attention to the ground. Come, take a look," the Mud Man waved and led Wei Tianyang to the edge of the high ground.
The two looked down upon the plain beneath the highlands, where the vast expanse of factory ruins was now clearly visible without the obstruction of wild forests from subjective reality.
The factory areas were crescent-shaped and connected together, spanning a large portion of land. Wei Tianyang couldn’t estimate the exact acreage, he could only describe it as "damn huge."
But on the walls and ceilings of these factory buildings, there were several thick red vines wrapped around them. They blocked the entrances and pathways like giant pythons coiled around the structures.
"What are those?" Wei Tianyang asked.
"That’s why we need to keep this secret guarded. Those Heavenly Falling Objects—have you ever wondered from which heaven they’ve fallen?" the Mud Man said gravely.
Wei Tianyang looked up once more at the eerie sky.
"Previous generations of the Superpower Special Department who stepped into objective reality have confirmed that these Heavenly Falling Objects leave scars in our world. Their corpses land in subjective reality, but some of their harmful effects spread through objective reality. Those strange diseases... that’s how they come about."
"Pharmaceutical companies can create us from corpses, so they can use these things to create the ultimate biological weapons."
The Mud Man looked sternly at Wei Tianyang, his eyes resolute, his face severe. He said earnestly, "We are soldiers, loyal to our country, to our people, and we must complete our missions. But before that, we are warriors trained among the human race."
"Since only we can enter, then... this is our responsibility. It’s our duty and the warrior’s mission."
Wei Tianyang listened to the Mud Man and was stirred. A warrior’s duty? The mission... he made a note of these two words.
"Can we enter here unrestricted and unconditionally?" he asked.
The Mud Man shook his head, "Whether we enter or leave voluntarily, it requires the consumption of some specific substances. I can give you a list so you can prepare them yourself in the future. But... but... we shouldn’t stay here long... You should feel it too, that creeping dread inside... It’s real, influenced by what’s above us."
Wei Tianyang looked towards the moon and felt an ominous shadow over his heart.
"Right, we must never let the ’outside’ know about what’s here. Destroying it is our responsibility! Get it?... Oh, and your code name? How should I address you?" the Mud Man added.
"Call me Ishmael," Wei Tianyang said.
"Good! There are many pollutants in this factory, and my super-sensory ability can sense their presence, which is why I entered objective reality when passing by."
"You mentioned earlier... that this thing spreads strange diseases, right? Damn it... I haven’t got any protective gear on me," Wei Tianyang frowned.
"Those Black Medicines have given us strength and also made us immune to these diseases. But don’t get cocky, Ishmael! It’s a curse!"
"Are there monsters inside? Can’t you handle them alone?" Wei Tianyang asked.
"No, there are no monsters. For decades, those who have entered objective reality have never seen any living creatures," the Mud Man said with a laugh.
"It seems you just feel this place is too big... and need someone to lend a hand," Wei Tianyang shook his head.
"Not quite... my superpower is controlling earth, but there’s no mud here... besides, my weapons can’t cut through those vines; I’ve already wasted a drum of ammo," the Mud Man smiled.
Wei Tianyang finally understood why the Mud Man had left a mark asking for help.
"By the way, what’s your superpower? Can you breathe fire? Or..." the Mud Man asked.
Wei Tianyang extended his right arm, flashing his Bone Knife.
"Okay, let’s go clean up," the Mud Man said with a smile.
