I Am Extraordinary Alone
Chapter 470 - 468 Black Fog

Chapter 470: Chapter 468 Black Fog

Price aimed his gun at the group of bound people; some were sobbing, some cursing, but most were silently unmoved.

The surroundings were very quiet, which made the bursts of gunfire in the distance even clearer.

Leng Kai said, "Johnny isn’t here. Let’s rescue these people."

Having said that, he was about to step forward.

At this moment, an unfamiliar sound reached everyone’s ears, a sound they were all too familiar with, similar to the hissing of a smoke grenade releasing gas.

Leng Kai immediately crouched down while activating the thermal imaging on his goggles, searching for potential attackers.

The others also knelt on one knee, lowering their stances and staying alert.

"Gas?!" Wang Mingxue exclaimed.

A bitter, pungent odor spread through the air, and Soap hurriedly took out a gas mask from his waist and put it on.

"It’s a trap; we need to retreat!" Price said while pulling a grenade from his chest.

"Wait a minute!!" Wang Mingxue hadn’t figured out what was going on.

Yuri dragged Wang Mingxue out, saying, "Those people have been drugged!"

Leng Kai and Xiao Qiang backed away. He saw the civilians’ eyes glowing red, which in the darkness looked like a pack of hungry wolves.

"They aren’t human anymore... That irritant is the key; Johnny has set us up!" Ghost said.

As everyone left the factory, Price pulled the pins from three grenades and threw them into the crowd.

As they just stepped out the factory door, heart-wrenching howls followed from behind, and then came the brutal explosions.

Wang Mingxue dared not look back, for she knew that the factory had turned into hell. Leng Kai caught up, continuously shooting behind them.

Price glanced at his HUD while running and said, "Mission terminated! We need to evacuate!"

Suddenly, everyone’s HUD displayed the evacuation route, but the next second, the HUD went offline.

"We’ve lost connection!! We’re being interfered with!" Ghost said.

Leng Kai unloaded the magazine into his waist bag, then took another from his chest rig and inserted it into the magazine well.

He looked back; a group of dark, tall, slender figures was running toward them.

How did people turn into that?

Black Medicine was supposed to grant people superpowers, so why did it turn them into monsters?

The eight of them ran for several hundred meters across the open field, constantly shooting behind them. At that moment, three off-road vehicles arrived just in time, stopping by the side of the road.

Without the support of their combat systems, they were unable to identify friend from foe through their goggles, but the vehicles were plainly recognizable as assets of the United Council.

The Black Medicine Army soldiers on the machine-gun seats shouted, "Get on!"

The eight quickly jumped onto the vehicles, hanging off the sides.

The gunners opened fire on the dark creatures on the field, their large-caliber bullets bisecting them. Yet they combined with each other, becoming whole again and continued their pursuit.

As the vehicles quickly drove away, Leng Kai, seeing the soldiers wearing gas masks, asked, "Have you encountered those things too?"

The driving soldier replied, "Corpses driving trucks delivered a large group of civilians; we were about to go rescue them! But they suddenly mutated!"

"Are there any normal people left in this country?!" Soap shouted, hanging off the door.

"Who knows! Go ask President Yinan yourself!" the soldier said.

"You’re the task force, right?! Before we left on our mission, we heard that there was a special forces team planning to capture Johnny alive!" the soldier said again.

"That’s us! But Johnny isn’t here!!" Leng Kai answered.

"Then what are we doing here?!" the soldier asked.

"Consider it a vacation," Soap said.

"Where are you headed now?!" Leng Kai asked.

"Our guys ran into the Superpower Special Department, and we’re almost out of ammo; we’re heading to the evacuation point." the soldier said.

"Nothing’s going our way, even though we were supposed to be the ones ambushing." Soap said.

"You managed to retreat after encountering superpowered soldiers? Our guys are right there, aren’t they?!" Leng Kai asked.

"Lucky, isn’t it?! Mud Man is dealing with those dead bodies, we’ve lost track of the other three!"

Leng Kai glanced at the rearview mirror and saw Wang Mingxue in the car behind, with Price.

He checked his rifle, and the navigation display in the car showed that the convoy was about to pass through a group of buildings.

Leng Kai took out a paper map from the side pocket and examined it. The area used to be a slum, and in a country already impoverished to the bone, the existence of both rich districts and slums was a cruel irony.

"Something’s there! Something’s there!!" the driver suddenly yelled out.

Leng Kai looked up only to see a black shadow crash into the windshield. The driver jerked the steering wheel wildly, and the vehicle tipped over as a result.

Soap was the first to leap out of the car, tumbling into the shoulder of the road and disappearing from view, whereas Leng Kai clenched the handle tightly as the vehicle rolled onto its side and skidded for more than ten meters before smashing into a tree on the roadside.

Leng Kai was pinned underneath. He pushed at the driver, who had already passed out, and then, gunfire erupted outside.

He pushed harder and saw Wang Mingxue appear at the window above him.

She yanked the driver out, then reached in to grab Leng Kai.

"Leng Kai! Leng Kai!" she called out anxiously.

"Don’t worry, I’m okay," Leng Kai said.

He grabbed Wang Mingxue’s arm, pulled hard, and his whole body squeezed out from the driver’s seat.

He lay atop the car, surrounded by swirling fog. The two SUVs behind had stopped nearby, with Price and a few soldiers jumping out to stand guard. Ghost pulled Soap out of the ditch; his right arm was bleeding profusely and seemed dislocated.

"Don’t take off your masks!" Price said.

The fog swirled around them, and pairs of red eyes stared at them from the darkness.

"They are near," Leng Kai said.

He and Wang Mingxue stood back to back, lifting their rifles.

"What did we just hit?!" Soap, holding his pistol, leaned against the back of the SUV, while Ghost crouched beside him.

"Look at that," Ghost pointed to a corpse nearby.

The group looked in the direction Ghost pointed and saw a man in combat gear lying on the ground, his left leg bitten off and his right arm mangled, his body full of holes.

"Who is that?" Leng Kai asked.

A soldier took a look and swore, "God... damn, that’s Mud Man!"

"One of our own superpower soldiers... dead?" Leng Kai was shocked.

"Stay focused, everyone. Move the injured to the vehicles; we need to get out of here fast!" Price said.

...

Wang Ye led his team to the next objective. Without the combat command system, he was unaware the mission had been cancelled. Now, the entire Black Medicine Army’s combat system was crippled, and thousands of soldiers in Yinan were scattered like sand.

They had run through several blocks, and according to the paper map, they had reached the center of the small town.

On their way, Wang Ye didn’t see any civilians or any national defense forces. He suspected that after the first round of air strikes, the town’s defense forces had been wiped out, and their only enemies left were the dead.

At that moment, a woman suddenly crossed the small stone plaza, her face wrapped in white cloth.

Wang Ye shouted to her, and the team quickly chased down the woman to detain her.

The woman kept talking, but Wang Ye couldn’t understand her. He took out his cellphone, set the simultaneous translation to offline mode, and finally, the woman’s words were correctly translated.

"I got separated from my child!! My child!!" the woman said frantically.

Wang Ye put an earphone in her ear and said, "What about the others?"

"I lost my daughter! She is only six years old! Please, help me find her!" the woman shook her head, crying out to the soldiers.

"Forget it... we can’t help her look for her child," Da Gu said.

"What’s that smell around here? It reeks," Mika said.

Wang Ye sniffed the air, which carried a sour stench.

"The smell of corpses?" Wang Ye said.

"Better put on gas masks, just to be safe," Da Gu said.

Everyone put on their masks, and Wang Ye took out a mask from his backpack to give to the woman, saying, "Where did you come from? Take me there, and I will help you look for your child."
