Chapter 471 - 469 Evil Faith
Chapter 471: Chapter 469 Evil Faith
The woman understood Wang Ye’s words and grabbed his hand, leading him to the other side of the stone plaza.
The squad followed her all the way.
"Do you think this is a good idea?" Da Gu whispered.
"We lack information," Wang Ye replied simply.
"I feel there are no survivors here. We should make contact with headquarters as quickly as possible, at the very least find a place with network access, and get the combat system online," Mika said.
"Let’s find those civilians first, then take them to the evacuation point with us. According to the map, there’s an evacuation point 12 kilometers west from here," Wang Ye said.
"We should head to the evacuation point first, meet up with the main force, then figure out a way to rescue them," Mika said.
"No one wants to run back here again, Mika," Wang Ye said.
He looked back at his teammates, then at Mika, who had nothing more to say.
Who would be willing to come back after reaching the evacuation point?
"We have no obligation to save them, right? Besides, even if we take them to the border, it’s unlikely the fleet will let them on board," Da Gu persuaded.
"But we can’t just leave people here," Wang Ye said.
If he hadn’t found out, then it would be another matter, but now that he knew civilians were trapped, he couldn’t just stand by and do nothing.
"Our mission doesn’t include this, I’m not going with you," a soldier said.
"We are soldiers!" Wang Ye said.
"I only risk my life for the missions set out by the United Council, I don’t want to play the hero," the soldier shook his head.
"I understand you, then you go to the evacuation point first. The others who think the same can leave too," Wang Ye said.
The nine-man squad instantly shrank to three.
Only Da Gu, Mika, and Wang Ye remained standing there.
"You know, they won’t be punished, because this really isn’t in the mission sequence," Mika said.
"I know," Wang Ye sighed.
"This isn’t a mission, but it’s our responsibility, Wang. This won’t earn you a medal, but it will give you peace of mind," Mika smiled.
"Give us peace of mind," Da Gu smiled.
The three of them continued following the woman, eventually arriving at a half-destroyed building.
It was impossible to tell what the building had been used for before, but the woman expertly entered a ruined hole in the rubble, opened an iron door, and let the two men follow her in.
Wang Ye activated his night vision goggles and followed the woman inside first; past the door was a narrow corridor with a small storeroom on the left side. The woman stopped at the end of the storeroom and knocked on the floor.
At that moment, Wang Ye heard the sound of a group of people stirring below; an old man’s voice emerged.
After the woman and the old man exchanged words through the floor, a large iron trapdoor was propped open.
Wang Ye followed the woman down, with Da Gu and Mika close behind, descending into the space below via a narrow iron ladder.
In a room less than 1.5 meters tall, Wang Ye saw dozens of men and women, old and young, huddled through the night vision goggles.
They became alert at the sight of Wang Ye’s weapon, but the woman quickly explained in a flustered manner.
Wang Ye handed his headset to the leader among them and said, "We’re here to catch Johnny. Does anyone know him here?"
The old man retorted angrily, "Johnny! He is a prophet, our guide! You shouldn’t have come!"
"Johnny is a terrorist," Wang Ye said.
"No, if you hadn’t invaded us recklessly! He wouldn’t have awakened the demons inside us! We wouldn’t have become like this!" the old man said.
Wang Ye turned to look at Da Gu and Mika, all of them feeling embarrassed. Their well-intentioned efforts were misdirected after all.
"Where have all the other people here gone?" Wang Ye asked again.
"They were all killed by you, but even in death, they will rise and continue to fight! Our god, Wei Tianyang, will protect us!" the old man roared.
"My child is missing!! They are willing to help me find my child!! Don’t do this!" the woman said frantically.
"You traitor! Your faith in Wei Tianyang is not strong enough! You refused to take Black Medicine! And you’ve led our enemies right to us!" the old man accused.
Wang Ye saw other women curled up in the corners, holding babies, with some children around three to five years old shielded by men. They understood the woman’s feelings, but no one helped her.
"She just wants to find her daughter!" Wang Ye said angrily.
"Her daughter isn’t important! Your deaths are what matter!!" the old man shouted, waving his fists.
At this moment, men in the cramped space began to roar at them, pulling out small folding knives and trying to get closer.
Wang Ye and Da Gu raised their guns and shouted, "Back off! Back off! Or we’ll kill you!!"
Da Gu patted Mika, who then turned and climbed the ladder to ensure their escape route was clear.
"Think of your children. You’ve become Johnny’s human weapons. If you die, what will become of them?" Wang Ye said.
"Their fathers will become heroes!" yelled the old man.
Wang Ye couldn’t stand it. He realized this old man must’ve been one of Johnny’s preachers used to delude people, and there were likely many like him in this country.
Da Gu also backed up the ladder, with Mika atop grabbing his bulletproof vest and pulling him up.
"Wang Ye, we’re leaving, hurry," said Da Gu.
As the woman stood by, crying, Wang Ye thought quickly, grabbed the woman, and pulled her behind him, saying, "Come with us; we’ll help you find your daughter."
"Look!! Look!!! That bitch has betrayed us!!" the old man cried out.
Wang Ye had Da Gu grab the woman while he leaned against the ladder, allowing the woman to step onto his shoulders to climb up.
"Kill her! Kill her!" the old man bellowed.
The men were getting closer, brandishing their knives in front of Wang Ye.
Wang Ye tapped his helmet.
Mika took a flash grenade from his vest, pulling the pin.
"Fuck off!" Wang Ye cursed, shooting the old man dead and quickly climbing the ladder.
Mika threw the flash grenade, grabbing the shoulder strap of Wang Ye’s bulletproof vest and yanked him up.
The men rushed forward as the flash grenade exploded.
A bright flash illuminated the corridor. Da Gu covered the woman’s eyes and turned his face to the wall, closing his eyes, while Mika and Wang Ye hit the floor.
Then, all four of them crawled through the corridor and made it outside.
"Damn it! Shit!" Wang Ye cursed.
They ran back to the stone square, where a group of dead soldiers was exchanging fire with enemies in a certain direction.
They quickly lay low but heard the sound of off-road vehicles.
Turning his head, he saw two vehicles firing while driving towards the dead.
Da Gu quickly stood up and waved his arms, shouting.
The off-road vehicle almost hit him; it swerved and stopped at the roadside, while another vehicle stopped in front of them, its machine gunner on the roof relentlessly firing, with casings clinking as they fell.
"What’s going on? Are there still people here?" Price jumped out of the vehicle, looking at Wang Ye.
"Which squad are you from?!" asked the driver.
"We’re Freelancer Squad, six more of our brothers have already gone to the evacuation point west of here!" Wang Ye replied.
"We’re headed there! Get in quick!" said the driver.
"No, this civilian lost her daughter, we need to help her find her child," Wang Ye stated.
"Don’t joke around... there are barely any survivors left here! And so many monsters! This place is doomed!" said the driver.
Wang Mingxue jumped out of the vehicle, saying, "Wait a minute! Is there a civilian?!"
At that moment, civilians from the ruins of the building also ran out; seeing a fully armed squad, they immediately put away their knives and started to act like harmless refugees.
"There really are! Look!" Wang Mingxue pointed towards them.
"They’re cultists," Wang Ye said.
"What?" Wang Mingxue gasped.
By now, more and more of the dead were emerging, comprised of the National Defense Force, Black Medicine Army, and civilians—some barehanded, some with melee weapons, and a few with rifles.
In addition to the dead army, there were tall, black, humanoid figures with blood-red eyes, pushing through the dead, moving towards them.
"Motherfucker..." Leng Kai got out of the vehicle, propped his rifle on the hood of the off-road vehicle, and aimed at the distant monsters.
Wang Ye and the rest also set up their weapons, and as if facing a great enemy, they unconsciously gathered together.
