Chapter 301: Chapter 299: Decadent Flesh
He changed into his combat suit in the tent, which clung to his body like a second skin. The lining, made of an unknown material, felt like many hands freely caressing his body.
The chest of the suit was reinforced with two ceramic bulletproof plates, and the abdomen featured a flexible, abdominally shaped protective layer. Both sides of the waist and the insides of the thighs had special bodily fluid discharge holes for sweat release, while the soles of the feet were equipped with sound-absorbing insoles, making his steps as silent as a cat’s.
Inside the suitcase was also a complete life support system and a portable radio set. Wei Tianyang did not need these, so he walked straight out of the tent.
Straus led him to the command tent, where everyone gathered around a table and put on AR glasses.
At that moment, at the far end of the table in the glasses, President Leona Surtz and the core cabinet members appeared. They were all squeezed into a small conference room in the President Mansion. Seeing Wei Tianyang fully dressed relieved them somewhat.
"No need for chatter, Wei, how confident are you?" Leona said.
Wei Tianyang had only used his large-scale annihilation ability once and had yet to test it on the Heavenly Falling Objects. Even if the annihilation was ineffective against it, he could absorb it and carry it away like an underwater spider. Thus, he had never considered the possibility of failing the mission.
"I don’t need to consider the success rate. Let me confirm once again, you’re sure the transition zone is clear of survivors, right?" Wei Tianyang said.
Leona looked at the Minister of Defense, who made a call and after repeatedly verifying the information, finally nodded.
"What I want to tell you is, there’s no going back. Once I activate that ability, it can’t be stopped, and it won’t be possible to reverse it either. So..." Wei Tianyang said solemnly.
"I know, you’re worried about causing a humanitarian disaster. We’ve verified the intelligence, the infected area indeed has no survivors left, go ahead with your actions. To retreat a million steps, even if it causes consequences later, this administration will take all responsibility," Leona said.
"Of the presidents I’ve dealt with, you are the first to take responsibility proactively," Wei Tianyang smiled.
Perhaps it was because she had earned his favor, or for some other reason, Leona also smiled.
"We have sacrificed many, and we cannot let their deaths be in vain. This matter must be concluded," Leona said.
Wei Tianyang nodded, "Evacuate your people from here, I cannot predict how much the area will expand after I activate the ability, it would be bad if there were accidental injuries."
Leona agreed and immediately ordered Straus to lead people in evacuating.
"Shouldn’t we leave some people behind for support? Also... after Wei handles it, if there are still survivors in the city, we can enter quickly to rescue."
Wei Tianyang sighed, "You still don’t understand, Straus."
Straus looked at him.
"Once I’m finished, there will be nothing left here," Wei Tianyang continued.
"What will you do? A hurricane? Fire? Or... a flood?" Straus’s face showed a puzzled expression.
He knew about the Superpower Special Department but had never seen it before. This mission was his first time seeing those soldiers with supernatural abilities.
"Don’t worry, it won’t cause any pollution, there won’t be any radiation dust, nor will it turn the ground into a mess of pits," Wei Tianyang said.
Straus was at a loss for words, and Leona could not laugh either, shaking her head, "The reconstruction work afterwards will be comparatively smooth. Straus, you’ve worked hard; withdraw."
Straus nodded, then a 3D map floated onto the table in front of everyone, constructed via AR glasses, not a stereoscopic projection.
The 3D map displayed the terrain around Gerlitz and its surrounding areas, with a huge red sphere located in the southern part of the city, while several areas on the map were marked with red X’s.
"Is that Heavenly Falling Object shaped like a sphere?" Wei Tianyang asked.
"It’s just an icon," Straus said.
"How big is it?" Wei Tianyang looked at Leona on the other side of the map.
"It initially looked like decaying brain tissue. The first measurement was 70 meters tall and 120 meters long," Leona answered.
"The first measurement?" Wei Tianyang asked.
"Yes... When we prepared to study it, sporadic transformation events occurred, and it continued to grow. By the second measurement, its height had reached 90 meters," Leona said.
"It’s more than that now, isn’t it?" Wei Tianyang asked.
"We cannot measure it anymore. These are images taken by spy satellites and drones," Leona explained.
As soon as she finished speaking, four photos appeared above the map.
The first photo, timestamped the day before yesterday, showed the current state of the Heavenly Falling Objects. They looked like a writhing mass of dark flesh, lying on the side of a mountain range, resembling a terrifying growth.
"We’ve given it a codename, ’Fallen Flesh’," Leona said.
"Fallen flesh? Very apt," Wei Tianyang nodded.
The second photo was taken last night in a city street, crowded with a marching crowd.
"Those are all zombies... They follow the Fallen Flesh, moving slowly, and it’s this behavior that has prevented them from spreading in all directions," Leona explained.
Wei Tianyang saw the third photo, a close-up of a zombie, its face very close to the camera filling the entire photo.
"This photo was taken by the first soldiers to contact the zombies... taken 2 months ago," Leona said.
Wei Tianyang observed carefully, noting that unlike the zombies in movies, the individuals in the photo were not rotten. Instead, they had undergone some sort of transformation. The mouth protruded, the face became elongated, the jaw narrower, resembling a cone. The nose enlarged as the nostrils expanded and the bridge flattened, causing the cheeks to hollow due to the deformation, as if the muscle tissue beneath the skin had melted.
"How strange..." Wei Tianyang pinched his chin, recalling the mutated corpses he had seen during his time at the Libitelli.
They were similarly emaciated, and their brains had deformed elongated.
The fourth photo showed the scene when the Fallen Flesh was first discovered. It was being hoisted by a crane, with a containment center being constructed nearby. Some workers were included in the photo, small in comparison to the dark mass in the distance.
"Which pharmaceutical company was in charge of this project?" Wei Tianyang suddenly asked.
"That..." Leona hesitated.
"It’s okay if you don’t want to say it. I just asked subconsciously," Wei Tianyang said.
He wasn’t concerned about which pharmaceutical was involved; the outcome was already sealed. They had failed, unable to obtain it.
Leona didn’t respond, just instructing the head of the intelligence bureau to synchronize all this information into the email being sent to Wei Tianyang.
"Now you know everything you need to," Wei Tianyang said. "Let’s pull out. I’ll go on ahead."
With that, he vanished into objective reality, disappearing inside the tent.
Straus was taken aback, startled by seeing a living person just disappear like that.
"Don’t worry, Straus. Take your people and evacuate. He will handle all the issues," Leona said.
