Chapter 244: Chapter 242 Challenge
Jonathan had Luke stop the car and switched off the safety on his rifle.
"Listen, we have the right to fire freely if those people make any threatening moves, shoot them on the spot," Jonathan said, "Mette and Grace come with me, Luke stays in the car and watches Spencer."
No one in the car objected, and Grace switched off her safety, asking, "Rules of engagement?"
"Our AR glasses and meme blockers will protect us, I will do the talking while you control others and keep them from getting too close," Jonathan replied.
He pushed open the car door and got out with Mette and Grace.
Spencer, sitting in the back, observed them through the windshield.
The trio formed a triangle and stopped in front of a man holding a rifle, all three guns pointed at him.
The negotiation began and the surrounding crowd temporarily calmed down, looking on from the side. However, to Spencer, this vigil seemed dangerously charged, the people suppressing their inner anger, their impatience evident from their expressions alone.
Spencer locked the car door, although seated alongside a Trinity, he still didn’t feel reassured.
He saw Luke’s hand resting on the rifle, with the other hand on the steering wheel, ready to engage at any moment.
These Superpower Special Forces, despite having miraculous and formidable supernatural abilities, still prioritized using rifles due to various restrictions and ingrained thinking.
It wasn’t their fault, after all, a Trinity’s superpower posed a significant load on the body, something Spencer was well aware of.
The capabilities of the Heavenly Falling Objects didn’t consistently tax the body; the Triangle could use their abilities frequently with antidotes in a day, but Trinity could not. Using their ability once required antidote and rest, and at most, they could activate it two to three more times before the venom in their spines would temporarily paralyze them, preventing any further forced use of their abilities.
These Trinities were formidable, but they lacked the skill level of Wei Tianyang because of the monotony of their capabilities and their low frequency of use.
Wei Tianyang could use Trinity-level powers indefinitely, possessing multiple, varied other abilities; Spencer had observed this first-hand, and top-secret documents from various countries described him similarly.
This was why only he could make the United Council and the main countries form a small secret alliance to ensure he wasn’t misused.
As the crowd grew noisier, Luke seemed to be losing his restraint. He folded the butt of his rifle and aimed the barrel towards the windshield, ready to provide cover fire at any moment.
Spencer, wearing headphones, couldn’t hear any sounds, but the beeping from the headphones alerted him that someone was speaking—indeed, he could see many moving mouths, as if they were cursing.
Jonathan and his team slowly retreated, turned around, and got back into the car; Spencer saw Grace holding another ICR rifle.
As the door shut, Luke let out a sigh, and Jonathan simply said, "Let’s leave this street."
The car doors shut and the meme blocker inside emitted white noise, diminishing the voices from outside. They drove off the shoulder, circled around the crowd from the sidewalk, and headed towards another street.
As Luke drove, he asked, "Do you know where he is?"
"We have limited information; that man said a young man sold him the gun in exchange for some food and water," Grace replied.
"Why would he do that?" Luke asked.
"I don’t know, the gun has a pheromone lock. The shopkeeper knew he couldn’t use it, so he returned it to us. Perhaps, the seller wasn’t Wei Tianyang." Jonathan answered.
"You mean... he lost the gun?" Mette said.
"There’s a possibility we can’t rule out; maybe he was hit, dropped his gun, and then headed to the northern forest," Jonathan said.
"Wei Tianyang wouldn’t fall in such a place," Spencer interjected.
Jonathan looked back at the rear seat and asked, "Why are you so sure?"
"From what I know of him, this place is not particularly dangerous for him," Spencer said.
"We’ve also looked at his file, indeed impressive, but he has never clashed with the Trinity, only fought against the two Triangles, and most of the time... he was slaughtering civilians and regular armies," Jonathan said disdainfully.
"That’s true," Spencer did not elaborate further, some things were inconvenient to mention and unnecessary.
"Our satellites and drones haven’t detected any widespread annihilation phenomena; he didn’t use his superpower, so there are only two possibilities: either he’s dead or he’s been infected," Jonathan said.
"Your deduction is too pessimistic," Spencer shook his head.
"This gun is right here, no soldier would discard their weapon, especially when there’s more than half of the bullets left in the magazine, he fired it, must have encountered some trouble," Jonathan said.
Spencer, unfamiliar with the current situation, simply stayed silent.
Grace then said, "You are the founder of United Pharmaceuticals, at first I thought you just shared his name."
"I thought my face was known to everyone," Spencer said.
"There are people in this world who don’t watch the news," Luke said.
"Do you know Wei Tianyang? Have you interacted with him regularly? What is his personality like?" Grace asked.
"He’s just a typical young man from Yin Country, impulsive, confused, but also persistent, no different from you," Spencer said.
"The file says he killed over a million people in Chicken Snake Country, but for some reason, he’s now a war observer for the United Council, pal? Don’t you find that especially ironic?" Mette said.
"There are places in the world at war every day; after Wei Tianyang killed a million people, the continuously warring Chicken Snake Country finally embraced peace, why do you think that is?" Spencer asked with a smile.
"The United Council isn’t foolish, he is now a restraint. I don’t judge his past actions, I’m only concerned about where he is now, what the situation is. Also, I think that for a Trinity-level soldier, he’s not qualified," Jonathan said at this point.
"Not qualified?" Spencer said.
"He hasn’t lived long enough, hasn’t been a soldier for long enough, doesn’t know what a real soldier is. I actually hope he’s been infected; then I’d have a reason to kill him. Even if he’s not infected, we’ll still take action, after all, we decide the situation here," Jonathan said with a cold laugh.
Luke laughed out loud.
Spencer looked at Grace and Mette beside him, who also wore disdainful smiles, laughing without a word.
"Why? Justice?" Spencer asked.
"To hell with justice, I’ve said it, I don’t judge his past deeds; I want to move against him just because the file says he’s formidable, that’s all," Jonathan said, laughing mirthfully.
"It’s a challenge," Mette nodded too.
"This is the game," Grace also laughed.
