I am chasing a rough man in the 80s
Chapter 179: The Scared Spiritless Street Urchin

Chapter 179: Chapter 179: The Scared Spiritless Street Urchin

On her first day at work, Suizi was sent to buy some items by the principal.

Most of them were office supplies. The Department Store was a distance away from the night school, and there was no public transportation available. It would take about forty minutes to walk there.

Suizi suspected strongly that this was the principal’s revenge for not getting the ribs.

Yu Jingting had gone to the construction site on a tractor early in the morning and hadn’t returned by noon, very likely because he had obtained more work to do.

Suizi left a note for Yu Jingting, informing him of her itinerary.

After buying everything she needed and there was still some time to spare, Suizi roamed around the Department Store.

The store spans two levels, selling an array of household items, clothes, fabrics, and a few small household appliances, but no baby supplies could be found.

Suizi had been standing in front of a tape player for quite some time.

She had been thinking about buying one to play tapes to her unborn child as a kind of prenatal education.

The concept of prenatal education did not exist at this time, just as there was no need to consume folic acid in preparation for pregnancy.

Suizi had the desire for her baby to be healthy and smart. A cassette tape with piano music was only ten taels, affordable for her.

The tape player was unaffordable though.

A single-deck tape record player imported from Yueben Country cost 340 taels, and it required a special ticket.

They haven’t even finished paying for the tractor at home. Suizi knew she mustn’t think about buying such large items.

Suizi regretfully touched her stomach. Her baby was currently just over three months old. Suizi had researched that a fetus starts to have hearing from the fifteenth week and starts reacting to external sounds during the twenty-eighth week.

She could not help but wonder whether she would be able to let her baby listen to a pleasant melody before then.

Since she couldn’t afford a tape player, Suizi looked at cameras instead.

In her previous life, there were little to no opportunities for her to take photos with the baby in her belly. This time around, she vowed to seize every chance to document the growth of her child.

These so-called "luxury items" were all displayed inside glass cases and could only be viewed from a distance.

Squinting her eyes, Suizi tried her best to discern the price. It was 420 taels, even more expensive than the tape player.

Her current monthly wage was forty-eight taels. She would need to starve for at least half a year to buy one.

She also can’t afford to buy a camera.

However, she consoled herself that it was okay because she could sketch it out.

If she couldn’t afford a camera, then she could use her paintbrush to record the changes that her child went through little by little.

She first had to practice sketching, starting with her baby’s daddy. She planned to use a neighborhood dog as a practice subject when she returned home.

"Step aside!" Babel noises echoed from the stairs.

Suizi had been in front of a counter near the stairs when she heard the noises. When she looked up, she saw a few workers carefully carrying a piano.

The sales clerks and customers all threw envious glances at the scene.

"The piano costs over 2000 taels, and you also need to have a ticket. Whose family could afford it?"

"Not sure. But they must be affluent."

The conversation between the two clerks reached Suizi’s ears, and she felt a pang of disappointment.

She had been hiding a secret.

She was tone deaf.

Fate had a way of balancing itself. It had given her many strengths but took away her ability to comprehend music.

In her previous life, she had sought all kinds of assistance from highly skilled teachers, but her abilities in playing musical instruments just wouldn’t improve.

Her hands, praised by Yu Jingting for their nimbleness when the lights were turned off, couldn’t coordinate on the piano keys.

Once she has saved up money, she decided to buy a piano and employ the best teacher to train Jiaojiao and the baby in her belly.

"Be careful!"

Accompanied with exclamations of surprise from the onlookers, Suizi came back to her senses.

A black board was descending from above. It was the piano cover!!!

The piano cover somehow fell off.

The workers also overlooked it since this expensive item was one they rarely handled, and they were dumbstruck when they saw what happened.

At the critical moment, a hand quickly pulled on Suizi’s arm and yanked hard.

Suizi was pulled to one side while the piano cover fell heavily on where she had just been standing.

The workers screamed in panic, fearful because a piece worth over 2000 taels had just been damaged.

Suizi was shaken and broke into a cold sweat.

If the kind stranger hadn’t pulled her, she would have been hit by the piano cover.

"Are you alright?" The savior was a young woman, shorter than Suizi, and spoke very gently.

"I’m okay, thanks to you." Suizi finally thought of thanking her savior.

This person indeed saved her life.

If it weren’t for her, Suizi would have been hit by the piano cover and the real issue would be her baby in the bell if it got injured.

"Thank you so much, may I have your name?" Suizi bowed to the savior, thinking that no matter what she had to repay her. Even if it was by delivering some home-cooked food.

"You don’t need to be so polite, I just lent a helping hand. I’m glad you’re okay." The young woman blushed at Suizi’s sincere gratitude.

"Suizi!"

Upon hearing the familiar voice, Suizi turned around. The next second, she was held in Yu Jingting’s strong arms.

After seeing the note that Suizi left, he hurried over to her.

He walked into the store just in time to witness the terrifying scene.

His wife almost got hit.

The entrance of the store was a fair distance from the stairs, so he didn’t have time to help her.

In that moment, his soul nearly escaped from his body.

Luckily, a kind stranger had saved her.

Suizi was wrapped securely in his arms. She wanted to reassure him that she was okay, but she felt his arms trembling slightly around her, and she couldn’t hold back her tears.

"I’m sorry Jingting. I didn’t mean to let you worry this much"

He didn’t respond. Instead, he tightened his grip around her even more.

Only when he confirmed her safety and sanity, did his anxious heart slow down.

"Were you scared? Touch my hair, you’ll feel better." Yu Jingting loosened his hold, reaching to touch her hair.

"A little." Though Suizi was usually strong, seeing how worried he was about her made her feel so wronged that tears couldn’t stop falling from her eyes. Seeing Suizi’s tears made Yu Jingting’s heart feel like it was being fried on a pan.

"Right, a kind person helped me—huh, where did she go?" Remembering that the kind stranger was behind her, Suizi turned to look back. But the woman was nowhere to be seen.

She must have left without revealing her name after doing a good deed.

"I really wanted to thank her, why did she leave so suddenly?"

Although for that lady, it was just a simple act of kindness, it made a difference for both her and the baby’s fate. Suizi regretted she couldn’t say thank you.

"You’ll meet again if it’s fate. For now, please, step back." Now that he had confirmed the wellbeing of Suizi, Yu Jingting pulled her back a step.

"Find your manager! This damn mall, my wife was almost injured by you all, bring your manager to face the consequences!"

Yu Jingting roared angrily, silencing the bustling shopping mall.

The workers had already carried the piano down. Two of them were examining the fallen piano cover. One of them spoke:

"She wasn’t hit, was she? She seems fine, so why the fuss? Hey, the piano cover has a dent—Ah!"

Yu Jingting abruptly kicked the man, sending him flying.

Suizi couldn’t stop him.

"Don’t blame the workers!" Suizi’s voice was swallowed up by the ensuing hubbub.

The workers, seeing Yu Jingting retaliate, swarmed him.

Most of those workers were guys in their 20s, brash and fiery. And with their naturally feisty northern temperament, things easily escalated.

Although four men surrounded Yu Jingting, they did not manage to gain an upper hand.

The manager of the store ran down from upstairs, looking to stop the commotion.

However, with Yu Jingting super focused on venting Suizi’s grievances, how could he stop?

If anyone dared to hurt his wife, he would see to it that they bleed.

The situation was spinning out of control. In desperation, Suizi made a snap decision.
