Chapter 707: And death claims another

"Death to the Galanis family!"

"Curses upon the name Galanis!"

"Death!"

The people of Gorgyma clamored in their numbers on the streets of their city state as Lady Euania paraded the captured Athaliah and her son, Ianthinos.

As for the elders, though they were arrested, the hate the people had towards them was minuscule compared to the hate they had towards the Galanis family.

They had suffered extensively with the last five generations of the Galanis family creating a stratified society that heavily impoverished the ordinary citizens while enriching the nobles.

Several structures erected during their reign, created using the sweat and blood of the common man, had already been destroyed, with the last one being the royal palace, already quite close to being torched.

"Euania, you are making a big mistake!" Athaliah cried out as she struggled against her bindings to no avail.

Meanwhile, her son, Ianthinos, the current ruler of Gorgyma, staggered forward as the guards behind him shoved him forward whenever he stopped moving.

The little bastard glared back at them as he bellowed. "Do you know who I am?... I will have your heads for this!... This is no way to treat a king!"

Before any of the guards could respond, a large rock suddenly pelted Ianthinos in the face, drawing blood as it fell to the ground.

The boy King stood stunned and the guards with him were silenced as well.

Alas, this was merely the beginning as even more stones began to rain down, the first one merely serving as a signal for the rest.

The people succumbed to their primal urges, deciding to not leave the destruction of the Galanis family to Euania, instead taking matters into their own hands.

"Ian!" Athaliah exclaimed as she shoved aside the guards and rushed to protect her child.

Meanwhile, the men Euania commanded tried to stop the enraged mob with very little success.

For every person they took down, seven more arose to stone the Queen Mother and her boy King.

"Euania!... Save us!" Athaliah cried out but received no response.

Euania couldn’t act unless she wished to turn the weapons of her subordinates against the people of Gorgyma.

Even if she decided on such an extreme act, what were the chances she would be able to beat back the people enough to take Athaliah and Ianthinos to safety?

And so, she stood, her eyes filled with complicated emotions as she watched as Athaliah and Ianthinos were stoned to death.

Why had she thought that parading the Queen and her son would serve as a means to let the people know that what they wanted had been fulfilled?

A foolish idea and due to that, the boy King and his mother were welcomed by the cold hands of death.

Somewhere else, in the pseudo-divine kingdom of the Jester, Harlequin announced with an eerie smile. "And so another bites the dust."

Alex left the Spirit World with Victoria, swiftly arriving in the valley that was now the resting place of the Broken Saintess.

Yet another Alex and the Fixer were waiting, the latter of which was clearly at the end of his wits as he approached the just arriving Alex, his gaze fixated on the sheathed sword he was carrying.

"Is that it?" The Fixer inquired.

Alex nodded, and instantly, The Fixer tried to grab it, only for Alex to let go.

The moment the Fixer held it, he fell to the ground, realizing belatedly that he was incapable of carrying the sword.

He blinked in confusion.

Meanwhile, Alex approached the other Alex with the two merging.

Victoria spared the Fixer a glance before making her way over to Alex who now stood before the corpse of the Broken Saintess.

"So what is your plan?" Victoria asked.

Alex pursed his lips. "According to what we know, the entity before us died because it skipped the creation of a pneuma."

"It basically has an Avatar and a Soma, but no pneuma." The Fixer chipped in as he got back on his feet and dusted himself, swallowing the earlier embarrassment.

"It also lacks a life force."

"Can no one else wield the GodKiller?" The Fixer asked, causing Alex and Victoria to glance at him.

"What do you think?" Alex asked back with a raised brow.

The Fixer thought to speak only to ultimately stay silent allowing Alex to shift his attention back to the Broken Saintess.

"You wish to replace its pneuma?" Victoria asked, quickly catching on to what Alex had in mind with the latter nodding.

"Instead of handing it to Vessina, I’d rather take a bit of my pneuma and hand it over to the Broken Saintess."

"But the pneuma has to be divine." The Fixer pointed out. "Otherwise, it won’t be able to handle the weight of carrying a divine Avatar and Soma."

"My pneuma may not be divine... but it is something." Alex calmly remarked, taking into account the fact that his pneuma was significantly tainted by Nyx.

Alex’s brows furrowed as he pondered a question at that moment, is Nyx in his current state divine?

His original deduction on Nyx’s identity as the shadow of the Absolute One remained but it did make him wonder if the divinity of the Absolute One would also persist in his shadow.

Pursing his lips, he guessed he would be finding out shortly.

"What about the life force?" The Fixer asked with Alex replying.

"Well, Victoria, if you don’t mind, could you call on the Witch."

"Understood," Victoria remarked as she chanted.

Open Sesame.

The next instant, a portal to the Spirit World appeared and out of it, the Witch of Fables emerged only to freeze, her face turning sour as she remained at the portal.

"Is something wrong?" Alex asked only for the Witch to respond.

Apologies, Alexander, but I won’t be able to help you. The ascension of the Jester is nigh, I cannot risk being infected by his foolishness.

With that, the portal disappeared, and The Witch returned to the Spirit World.

"That was... unfortunate," Alex muttered while scratching the back of his head.

Meanwhile, the Fixer’s expression revealed his inner turmoil as he grappled with the ever-increasing possibility that he would fail in his mission and the Jester would complete his ascension.
