Chapter 708: The Everlasting

The Beast of Erethetri.

It was the stuff of nightmares, an entity that had managed to leave an indelible mark on the continent of Henos with its actions.

It had been centuries since anyone had come across it causing some to even begin to question if it was truly a living being or perhaps it was just a fairytale spun by parents to ensure their kids behaved.

Clearly, that was not the case as it stood a good distance away from Cybele with a ravine separating them.

Cybele, or rather, ’Cybele’, had seen many things in her long life, but this entity was unlike anything she’d ever laid eyes on.

Its mere presence was enough to suffocate people and laying eyes upon it was the same as laying upon the origin of all life.

Her fight or flight response was rendered obsolete as she sat on her buttocks, her eyes widened as she waited for it to act.

It regarded her for quite some time before suddenly turning to take its leave.

Taking a step away, a gust of wind blew past and then, it was gone.

Cybele struggled to understand why it revealed itself just to leave and for a moment, she couldn’t help but think to herself.

Why did it seem... disappointed?

The memories came up on him like a flood, causing Ulysses to spasm as he struggled to handle the sudden inflow.

Amidst the flow of memories, he heard a familiar voice constantly repeating the word, remember who you are.

"Ah!" He let out an agonizing scream as he fell to the ground, his fingers digging into his skull as it felt like his head was about to crack open.

Finally, the inflow of memories stopped, and Ulysses was left lying on the floor, unconscious, with foam at the corners of his mouth.

A moment later, he gasped, regaining consciousness with a lost look swiftly appearing on his visage.

"I... am Ulysses." He muttered in a hoarse tone only for his expression to distort as the words of the Lord of Flesh and Blood, manifesting as whispers, sought to overtake his thoughts.

Ulysses struck his head repeatedly in a bid to get rid of the whispers but this did nothing in the form of relief as the whispers persisted, even growing stronger with each passing moment.

"I serve the Lord, I must fulfill his demands."

"I am Ulysses, I want to explore the world."

"The Lord demands obedience."

"I have free will!"

"Submit!"

"No!!!"

Ulysses’ mind fractured as two personas arose within his psyche.

One was Ulysses Nester, a young man with a dream to explore the ends of Eventide, to map out the world.

The other, The Everlasting, a being that owed its existence to the Lord of Flesh and Blood and swore allegiance in its name, seeking only to fulfill the wishes of his master.

Both sought dominance over the same body and in their quest, they fought without holding back.

Within moments, Ulysses’ body turned into a battlefield as one half remained normal while the other turned into a grotesque mass of bloodied muscles.

"What now, Master?" Victoria asked with Alex letting out a sigh.

"Well, since Plan A won’t work, We’d go with Plan B."

Just then, the Fixer, panicked as he was by the Witch of Fables words, remarked. "We do not have time for plans!... Do you both not understand that we shall all soon be ruled by foolishness?... We need to act now!"

"And how do you propose we do that?" Alex inquired.

"That..."

"According to what I understand, only a divine being can kill another divine being... or at least, something of divine nature. So tell me, do you know of any deities that would be willing to help you kill the Jester?"

"..."

"I’d take that as a no. So that means we are stuck with my sword, and right now, I cannot use it, so instead of bringing up things we already know, either bring up good ideas or stay silent. The time I wasted just now would have been put to better use!"

The Fixer choked, realizing belatedly that he was losing his composure due to his fear of what would happen should the Jester complete his ascension.

Letting out a sigh, Alex shifted his attention back to Victoria. "Do you trust me?"

"With my Avatar, Master." Victoria quickly replied, even going as far as to bend the knee.

"Then, let’s begin."

Alex snapped and instantly, a black and white circle appeared on Victoria’s forehead.

The air whipped up a frenzy as she accessed her latent potential, exponentially increasing her strength.

At that moment, she was no different from a Cryptid Ruler, causing the aether to embrace her.

"60 seconds." Alex intoned. "From now on, we will be replicating what Abraham did to become the God of Darkness... with a few extra steps."

"I await your command," Victoria said.

"Create a connection between you and the Broken Saintess, it will be taking a bit of your life force."

Without hesitation, Victoria did as instructed, swiftly creating a thread, connecting one end to her while connecting the other end to the Saintess.

Moments passed before Victoria’s forehead was covered in perspiration.

At the same time, a powerful heartbeat was heard.

Ba-dump

Accompanying that heartbeat was a wave of negative emotions that swept across the entire valley.

Meanwhile, Alex took a deep breath and accessed the connection he had with the Fountain of Knowledge.

He recalled that the guardian of the Fountain had given him permission to reach it whenever he wanted, without needing to physically go to it.

Reaching out with his cupped hands at the seemingly empty space, the Fixer watched as almost seven drops of clear water fell into Alex’s waiting hands.

Satisfied that this had worked, Alex approached the Saintess and poured these water droplets into the open mouth of the deity.

"First, a potent life force," Alex said. "Then, a source of divinity."

Taking a step back, Alex continued. "Next, a powerful enough pneuma."

Then, he closed his eyes and found himself standing across from the Dark Spirit Body in a dark space with black water serving the ground on which they stood.
