Chapter 706: A thousand deaths

The situation was dire.

According to Cybele’s estimations, it would take roughly ten minutes for the Azure Seas to completely devour Henos, at which point, the Jester’s ascension would fail and her plan would come to a grinding halt.

It was now or never.

She was no hero, but if she didn’t act, there would be no future for her anywhere.

This was her only chance to make everything right, to bring back those that had fallen.

And so, she acted.

Looking down at Leibita, Cybele understood that she couldn’t directly affect the mobile city with her Apostolic powers.

Worst case scenario, an explosion would occur as a result of divine energy coming in contact with the Quillion within the ship which would surely cause the mobile city to collapse.

But that didn’t mean there were no other ways to get Leibita to the currently shrinking coast.

She shifted her attention to the path ahead and with a thought, altered the distance between her current location and the coast.

Now with a clear view of the sea, she looked ahead, ignoring the surging waters; after all, they couldn’t reach her.

It would be a while before the sea would cross the infinite distance she had placed.

"Mutual destruction it is then." Cybele intoned as she transformed into information and made her way into Leibita.

She naturally couldn’t fight against Ninmah.

But that didn’t mean there weren’t other ways to convince the Goddess of the Deep Sea to seize her encroachment.

The largest of the terror weapons began to charge up, causing a mass of black energy to appear at the tip.

Once it had gotten to full power, Cybele let it loose.

The black ray shot across the sea, slamming into the defenses of the Enclave before swiftly eating through them to strike at the land within.

There was no sound as the Enclave was devoured by the black light.

Almost immediately, several lightning bolts manifested in the sky before striking at Leibita in a bid to destroy the mobile city.

Cybele was ready as she altered distance again, this time shifting the location of Leibita before once again firing another shot of the terror weapon, this time into the sea itself.

A terrifying shriek echoed across the world, causing Cybele to freeze.

The next moment, blood began to trail out of her seven orifices as she suffered immense damage.

Gritting her teeth, she fought through the pain, deciding to make her last move.

It was all or nothing now.

With a thought, she altered direction again, placing Leibita at the center of the Azure Seas.

Then, the mobile city’s core detonated.

A frightening explosion occurred as a sea of black light made to swallow everything.

Ninmah was forced to withdraw everything she had to defend herself against the terrifying attack long enough for her to flee back to her divine kingdom.

If even Khanna could suffer extreme damage from taking an attack of such magnitude head-on, Ninmah didn’t think herself strong enough to experience a different outcome.

By the time the black light died down, a quarter of the Azure Seas was covered by black crystals resembling Quillion.

Meanwhile, Cybele was standing at the coast, watching as the waters of the Azure Seas receded, revealing the portions of Henos that it had already devoured.

Staring at the dead bodies that were washed up, her expression turned sour.

Each person dead was someone who would not be able to return once the Jester’s ascension was completed.

Clicking her tongue, she made to leave only to freeze as she felt someone staring at her.

Instinctively, she glanced in a certain direction and then, she saw him.

It was a faceless brown-skinned man with a muscular physique, wearing nothing but a loincloth made out of animal skin.

His shadow stretched indefinitely and it took on the shape of a beast that seemed to be formed by the merger of every living land animal.

Cybele staggered back in a panic, only to trip, causing her to fall on her butt, disrupting her focus.

Once she looked over again, the man was gone.

Her heart palpitated as she pondered the man’s identity before swiftly coming upon an answer.

A thousand deaths.

That was what Ulysses suffered at the hands of the Lord of Flesh and Blood.

Each death was unique, with the First Class Otherworldly finding new ways to end Ulysses’ life only for the latter to come back.

By the thousandth death, Ulysses was gone, all that remained was merely a shell that shared a resemblance to that individual.

Then, the Lord of Flesh and Blood reached out with several veiny tendrils that pierced into Ulysses’ body, raising him up from the ground, after which it began to feed him with its thoughts, aspirations, and dreams.

The Otherworldly might be creatures considered illogical by other entities within and around Eventide, but it did not change the fact that they were living beings as well.

And the Lord of Flesh and Blood, as a living being, had a dream.

A world where death would be no more, where life would continue to grow and flourish... a cancerous world.

It wished for Ulysses to be its servant, to make preparations for such a world.

Once it was done implanting those thoughts, it retracted its tendrils, allowing Ulysses’ body to fall to the fleshy ground with a dull thud.

In a zombie-like manner, Ulysses got back on his feet and turned to leave, having achieved communion with his patron.

Just as he took a step forward though, he felt something underneath his feet, causing him to look down with glassy eyes.

His empty gaze fell upon a talisman made of bone and inscribed with a distinct symbol.

Blinking a few times, he instinctively reached down and picked it up.

Looking to the side and then to the left, he recognized the symbol to be dragon-tongue for a particular word.

Ulysses spoke up, reading aloud the symbol in a hoarse voice. "Memories."

Almost immediately, a green glow erupted, swallowing him up in an instant.
