Chapter 695: Pride and Fables

The last thing Archibald recalled was returning to the valley after a close shave with death in the Spirit World, coming face to face with what could only be described as a spawn of hell before being overtaken by his emotions.

After that... nothing.

Now, as he opened his eyes, quickly setting sights on what was a showdown between a Greater Spirit and a Devil which caused a massive stir in the aether, he found himself uttering but a single word.

"Huh?"

As the Witch of Fables locked eyes with Vessina, nothing else seemed to matter at that moment as she released her Authority, with Vessina doing the same.

Even as she wasn’t at full strength, leaving her disadvantaged against the Devil of Pride, she had no plans of backing down, already prepared to do battle should Vessina make a move.

Just as Vessina’s Authority made to overwhelm her, a foreign Authority, one that originated from a being greater than she and Vessina yet lacking substance swept past, prompting her attention to be shifted towards where it had come from.

Vessina looked over as well, and a moment later, both were staring at Alex, who felt out of place due to how they were staring at him.

"Are we settled now?" Alex inquired.

I would advise that you do not utilize that faux authority of yours recklessly, lest you end up drawing unnecessary attention.

The Witch calmly said with Vessina quickly following up.

I would have to agree with the Spirit. We may not have any reason to pry into its origins, but there would be those that do have a reason and I can assure you that you would not wish to grab their attention.

Alex frowned, quickly realizing that the both of them were scolding him.

Coughing awkwardly, Alex replied. "There was no other way to stop you both from fighting."

Fight?... Don’t be naive, why would we fight?

"Then the release of Authority just now..." Alex trailed off as the Witch responded.

Merely an attempt to establish dominance.

One that I no doubt won.

The purple-skinned succubus pointed out with a toothy grin, with the Witch snorting in response.

You and I both know why that is.

Realizing that perhaps he might have been worried for no reason, Alex let out a relieved sigh.

Just as he thought to speak up, the Fixer remarked. "If you both are done flexing muscles, then can we get along with why we are here?... The first phase of the Jester’s ascension is close to completion."

That explains the change of divinity over the land. I was curious why Khanna would allow Kiesan to exert such a domineering aura over the entire continent.

Vessina muttered as she glanced at Alex.

Mind explaining why you summoned me?

I am also curious.

The Witch chipped in from the side.

Taking a deep breath, Alex explained the situation surrounding Excalibur’s current location.

By the time he was done, both the Witch and Vessina traded looks for a moment before looking back at Alex.

I fail to see why you decided to involve us.

The Witch, clearly in agreement with Vessina’s words, glanced at Victoria who stood beside Alex.

I did warn you not to return to the Spirit World.

"It was an unavoidable act." Alex quickly came to her defense. "No need to blame her."

So what now?

Vessina asked before adding in a dignified tone.

I hope you do not plan to ask for my aid in retrieving the blade.

Alex let out a sigh. "Can’t I?"

Barring the fact that you have nothing to offer in a deal with me, I am also not keen on making a journey into the Spirit World.

"Why?"

I’d rather not answer.

The Witch snorted at the side as she remarked.

Instead of acting so dignified, why don’t you put aside your pride and tell him the truth, that you do not dare enter the Spirit World to avoid getting torn to shreds.

Alex raised a brow. "Sorry, what?"

Vessina glared at the Witch.

An unnecessary piece of information, if I do say so myself.

The Witch snorted and yet again, tension rose between the two.

Just as Alex thought to step in, Elena returned in a flash of golden light.

Noting something, she glanced back to look at a particular spot in the valley that was now noticeably empty.

"I could have sworn there was someone there before." She muttered to herself before deciding not to pay much attention to it.

Alex paid her no heed after he’d determined her presence, shifting his attention back to the Greater Spirit and Devil before him.

"I was thinking..."

"Alex," Elena called out as she rushed to his side.

Alex paused, taking a moment to sign before facing her. "Yes?"

"I think we might be able to revive the dead newborn... at least for a bit."

Taken aback at first, Alex inquired. "How?"

"Ana, Nadia, and Arwen are facing off against a Fallacy. We might be able to use it to revive the newborn."

"... I don’t think I follow." Alex appeared perplexed as he waited for an explanation only for Vessina to chip in from the side, displaying her curiosity.

A Fallacy?... As in, a Divine Fallacy?

Only then did Elena realize the existence of the Witch of Fables and the Devil of Pride?

"Uhmm... hello?"

You mentioned the existence of a Divine Fallacy just now. Where is it?

Unsure of how to respond, Elena glanced at Alex who shrugged.

He had no clue what it was anyway so he couldn’t exactly decide if she could or could not share information on it.

"Next to the city-state of Nysodosia." Elena finally said.

Interesting. It seems a lot has happened in Henos.

Vessina remarked in amusement while the Witch pressed on.

And you said something about a newborn?

"Over there." Alex chipped in while pointing at a certain location.

Both Vessina and the Witch look over, quickly laying eyes on the corpse of the Broken Saintess.

The former seemed to recognize something as she appeared next to the corpse before muttering something to herself.

I thought she was joking but I guess she wasn’t.
