Chapter 528: Horseman of the Undead Wheel
Despite expecting it, when it did arrive, it left them shocked with a sharp buzzing assaulting their ears for a moment.
The city shook like it had been struck by an earthquake while flames devoured the entire city, leaving nothing in its fiery wake.
The undead caught in the blast were reduced to cinders while those matching in didn’t even get a chance to scream before the fire devoured them as well.
Perhaps due to how densely packed the undead were, it spread to those outside though it didn’t last long due to the overwhelming cold that persisted outside the city walls.
Of course, this was of no consequence as the flames within the city kept going, causing temperatures to reach a frightening degree, resulting in the melting of metals.
With a natural resistance to high temperatures, Leslie only felt mildly hot as he stared through the hole, allowing him a brief gaze of Parafall.
His heart ached as he watched the city he had defended for years slowly but surely turn to ashes.
He wondered if things would have ended differently if he had made better decisions, but at the end of the day, he knew that the answer didn’t matter.
What was done was done and now all that was left was to keep moving forward.
"Are you alright?" Natasha suddenly inquired, drawing his attention over.
She naturally understood how he felt after all; she, too, was helpless as she watched BoneHaven first get destroyed by Basar and his sinister plot and then by the Whisperers.
Leslie let out a sigh. "Yeah. The city can always be rebuilt. As long as the people are safe, then we won."
"I agree." Natasha intoned and was just about to say more when she sensed something causing her to pause, same with Leslie.
He immediately looked through the hole, his gaze drawn to the gates of Parafall leading into the Western prairie only to discover a shocking sight.
The Headless Horseman had dared to walk into the city and yet, the flames did nothing to impede its movements, its body turning left and right before pausing in the direction they were hiding in.
Leslie turned wide-eyed. "How is this possible?"
"What’s wrong?"
"The Horseman... he is negating the effects of the flames."
"What?" Natasha didn’t even know how to react as this was unprecedented.
Fire was a known weakness of the undead and had never been rendered impotent even against the Horsemen.
So how come this Horseman was able to move within the flames without restraint?
Leslie quickly came to a realization. "That’s not a Horseman."
"What?"
"No, I think it is a Horseman but it’s also something more." At this point, Leslie was scrutinizing the Horseman who was in turn scrutinizing him as well.
Just then, the green flames burning on the Horseman surged forth before proceeding to produce a head of flames over its empty neck.
"An Undead Wheel Mystic?" Leslie was left dumbfounded at the sight.
Before they could even react, the yellow flames turned an eerie green under the control of the ’Horseman’, before proceeding to surge forth like a wave, swiftly turning into a flaming tornado that reached the heavens.
But that was hardly the end of it as the spirits of the fallen emerged from the flames before charging at Leslie and Natasha’s position.
Both instinctively unleashed waves of Antimagic, destroying the first wave of attacks but that was merely a prelude of what was to come.
The tornado made of green flames swept down with the intention of striking where the duo were hidden.
Leslie grabbed Natasha instinctively before proceeding to rush out of the spot with the flames slamming down with a vengeance.
"How do we deal with this?" Natasha questioned as she had never heard of a situation where an Undead Wheel Mystic merged with a Headless Horseman.
"We deal with it as we have dealt with every other supernatural being we have come across, we destroy it."
Bam
Leslie rushed into the open street just as the flame dived toward their position.
Aware that the Horseman had a seemingly inexhaustible well of resources to pull on for the spectacle, Leslie understood that it would be unwise to fight head-on, so he made a different choice.
He snorted as he pulled out his switchblade and activated it, resulting in the emergence of a double-sided blade.
With a single slash, the tornado split in two, its ghostly tongues turning everything it touched into dust.
Leslie gritted his teeth as he quickly discovered that even with his attempt at conserving energy, it was barely enough to handle the tornado of flames.
By the time the flames died out, he was covered in sweat and his breathing was uneven.
Alas, he wasn’t properly rested and so was in severe need of a boost.
Naturally, the enemy at their doorstep wouldn’t give them that.
The Horseman silently appeared at the end of the street, its flaming eyes scanning the duo for a moment before it spoke in a hoarse voice.
"Death to the Empire."
There was a rumbling followed by the emergence of several undead with their sheer numbers causing Natasha to clench her jaw.
Even at full strength, there was no way she’d be able to defeat that many enemies coming at her but quite aware that there was no turning back, she deigned it right to step forward.
Leslie grabbed her wrist. "No, this isn’t your fight. Parafall is my city, you don’t have to fall here."
Natasha smiled. "You have punished yourself enough. Rest for now."
With that, she pulled away and took further steps forward before getting into a fighting stance, her gaze zeroed on the Horseman.
If only she could deal with him, the rest of the undead would return to being mindless.
Of course, it remained to be seen if the Horseman would allow her to approach, but that didn’t matter, and so with a deep breath, she took off.
