Hunter of the Evernight -
Chapter 519: Made of paper
Chapter 519: Made of paper
It was an awe-inducing sight, no matter how he looked at it.
He’d never thought paper could be used in such a manner, so it was quite a novel experience.
A towering tree made out of white paper with arcane writings on it stood tall several meters ahead and on a certain branch, a treehouse was outlined, also made out of the same mystical paper.
"Is this the place?" Alex inquired out of habit though he could already guess the answer.
Victoria entertained him. "Yes, master. This is the domain of the Witch of Fables."
"Does she know we are here?"
"I do not know. From what I’ve understood, the Witch seems to enjoy her slumber. I can’t be sure she is awake."
"Then, let’s..." Alex trailed off as he sensed a gaze fall upon him.
He glanced toward the origin just in time to watch as a paper plane flew over and circled him, seemingly scrutinizing him.
Sensing no malice, Alex didn’t attack and allowed it to do as it pleased.
Moments passed before the paper circled Victoria as well after which a voice echoed.
Come in.
Alex watched as several pages rushed out and enveloped the small paper plane, causing it to grow larger until it was big enough to carry two people.
Exchanging looks with Victoria, both stepped onto the plane after which it took them to the treehouse.
First a dragon, now a paper plane... Alex wondered what else he’d be able to fly on before the end of his quest.
It was rather amusing that the most normal form of air transport on Eventide, the airship, was still not something he had experienced.
He might have to consider getting on one during his journey over to Henos.
In any case, now was hardly the time for such thoughts as he focused on the task ahead.
Upon landing on the porch of the treehouse, Alex watched as the plane dissipated into pages that floated away in an eye-catching fashion.
Instinctively, he reached out and grabbed one of them, eliciting a wave of energy to erupt from within the treehouse.
He immediately let go as it almost felt like the paper he’d touched was...
My body.
The Witch of Fables revealed herself, her gaze zeroed on Alex with a complicated expression on her face.
Alex raised a brow. "What?"
How did you manage to touch my body?
The Witch inquired.
"Wait..." Alex quickly realized as he glanced at the treehouse and the floating paper about it.
Yes, everything paper you see is a part of my body and unless one has a deep connection with spirits, you shouldn’t be able to touch me.
"I guess it just happened." Alex shrugged, unwilling to put too much thought into an offhand action.
Hmm, I guess there is much about you that is yet to be unraveled.
Alex smiled. "Isn’t that the beauty of the supernatural?"
Why are you here, Dark Lord?
"I need your help."
You haven’t paid the debt for the last aid I gave to you, yet you come asking for another?
Alex raised a brow. "What are you talking about?"
Ah, it seems she didn’t tell you.
As she spoke, The Witch glanced at Victoria causing the vampire to furrow her brows.
Upon realizing something, Alex glanced at Victoria. "Do you know about this?"
"Not at all, Master. I am not aware." Victoria remarked even as she wracked her brains to figure out when she had reached out to the Witch.
You won’t remember, after all, I did arrive after you had passed out.
Victoria went wide-eyed as she remarked. "The incident at the Black Gold gate?"
Precisely.
Turning to Alex, The Witch remarked.
Your subordinate saw something she shouldn’t have. If not for me, she would have died and her soul promptly destroyed due to being corrupted.
Alex’s expression shifted as he had no idea such a thing had transpired.
Pursing his lips, he remarked. "What do I have to do to repay this debt?"
What do you think it is worth?
"The promise to aid you."
That is a whole different matter entirely, Dark Lord. Please do not play me for a fool.
"Fine then, state your price."
The help I provided has left me on the edge... I need a means to recover. Find me a Heart-shaped Lotus and we should be even.
"A lotus?" Victoria frowned. "Such things can’t be so easily found."
Alex glanced at her. "What is a Lotus?"
"It’s a miraculous plant only found in the Bed of Roses which is considered one of the Seven Mysteries along with Quillion and the Branches. All I know is that the lotus is capable of perfect restoration, but the entrance to the Bed of Roses has only ever been found 3 times in recorded history. "
Alex glanced at the Witch, scrutinizing her before he finally muttered. "If I have a different means to heal you, would you be willing?"
I am all ears.
"Give me your hand." Alex calmly remarked as he stretched out his hand.
The Witch gazed upon him before she began to reduce, taking on a more human size before approaching Alex and placing her arm in his own.
A moment later, a resounding snap echoed followed by the Witch of Fables bathing in the Blessings of the Dark Moon.
By the time she came to, her foundations were once again without risk of collapsing.
Alex withdrew his hand as he remarked. "Okay?"
It would seem I was right to help.
"Now let’s get down to business." Alex snapped again, causing Humphrey to emerge.
The previous Lord of the Flies looked about with a perplexed look on his face but ultimately asked no questions as Alex addressed the Witch.
"I plan on disrupting the Blood Feast. At least, long enough for its effects on the populace to reduce."
Why?
"Because I need to be a WatchGuard, Hero, and Shepherd, all at once," Alex remarked. "What better way than to save the whole Empire?"
The Witch’s eyes flickered with understanding as she nodded.
I am listening.
