Hunter of the Evernight -
Chapter 518: Jus soli
Chapter 518: Jus soli
Aiden arrived at BlackWatch with the aid of his flying sword, allowing him to shorten the journey drastically while keeping a close eye on the creature above.
On his arrival, he rushed over to the Octagon to find that his fellow Family Heads were also present, including the rather reclusive Oswald.
It dawned on him that it had been quite some time since he had seen them and so, subconsciously, he began to note the changes in each person.
His gaze lingered briefly on Robert and Charles, finding that they were missing important limbs.
He would have to inquire about that later on.
Just then, Veronica arrived in the hall with a complicated look on her face.
Her gaze washed over everyone present before pausing on Aiden.
She was surprised at his presence though she had been expecting him.
It had been a while since the Battle God left for the Southern outpost.
She offered her greetings with a bow. "I thank you all for honoring my request to meet."
"What is going on Veronica?... You sounded hard pressed over the radio." Lionel calmly intoned with the others sharing similar curiosity as they shifted their attention to her.
Taking a deep breath, Veronica replied. "I’m sure you all are aware of the situation with the Abyss."
"Indeed," Aiden spoke up. "Multiple Incursions abound and now, there is even a shadow of a 1st-Class Otherworldly flying over our heads."
The expressions of the family Heads turned ugly as they all also noticed Sister Crimson in the sky.
To think that it had gotten to such an extent.
"This is clearly on an even greater scale than the Great Calamity. What is the trigger?" Conrad inquired.
"We might have an idea, but please do beware that this is information from the Dark Lord."
"The Dark Lord?" Henry raised a brow. "He contacted you?"
Veronica shook her head. "No, he is in contact with Lucille."
With that, all eyes fell on the Battle God causing Aiden to cough awkwardly.
"You have relations with the Dark Lord?"
The question was hardly disparaging as Aiden was a lot of things but none would dare deny his love for the Empire.
If the Dark Lord wasn’t already dead, then there had to be a good reason.
Aiden sighed. "He came to me to set Ana free."
"Don’t tell me you allowed that," Noah remarked with a deep frown.
"I did." Aiden casually remarked.
"How can you do that?" Noah was unhappy with the revelation as he added. "There is a reason our ancestors kept her under Vow."
"This is hardly the time to bother with that. The Abyss desires to use the current situation to set a foothold in Eventide. We would be fools to bicker while allowing that to happen." Lionel calmly pointed out with Noah letting out a sigh.
He too understood that this wasn’t the time to discuss Ana’s current situation.
"Is the Dark Lord a threat?" Charles inquired with Aiden shaking his head.
"Not at all. He holds no designs to aid the Night Kindred and his goals are a bit more... insane. We have nothing to fear from him." Aiden replied.
Godric nodded. "If you say so, then it’s fine."
Then shifting his attention to Veronica, he inquired. "What did the Dark Lord uncover?"
"He claims that whatever the Abyss is planning is related to a ghost baby his sister carries in her spiritual womb." Veronica awkwardly intoned, finding it quite hard to understand her words.
Ethan raised a brow. "Ghost baby?"
"Indeed, he claims the Abyss has had designs of birthing a baby for quite some time. If not for him, those babies would have long since been born."
Just like that, the family Heads fell into deep thought, pondering the implications of Veronica’s words.
"Did he say anything else?" Henry inquired.
Veronica shook her head. "No, not yet. However, we have news on our end."
"Speak."
"We have reason to believe that the being currently lording over the Eastern Highlands is a Daemon of the Abyss Wheel."
Almost everyone reacted, save for Aiden who remained deep in thought.
"A Daemon?... Where could he have been hiding all this while?" Maximilian couldn’t help but ask.
All within the supernatural world were aware of the dangers of allowing an Abyss Wheel Mystic to grow so how could one allow a Daemon of that accursed Wheel to be birthed?
"Most likely abroad." Henry let out a vexed sigh. "Those bastards have never taken the dangers of the Abyss Wheel seriously."
"But to the extent of a Daemon?... This is utter madness."
"So we have a 1st-Class Otherworldly and now a Daemon?... I really must wonder if a powerful existence has cursed our Zion Empire to fall." Lionel intoned in a tired tone.
Most shared his sentiments as they realized that their current situation seemed to have gotten to an all-time low.
If not for their Creeds being built on the Empire, perhaps they might have begun to consider leaving already to avoid meaningless bloodshed.
Just then, Aiden turned to Oswald, the only other silent party so far.
The latter returned his gaze.
"Are you thinking what I’m thinking?" Aiden inquired.
Oswald let out a sigh. "If it is indeed what we are thinking, then we have to stop it at all costs."
"What have you discovered?" Robert asked, voicing the thoughts of others.
"Jus soli." Oswald calmly replied.
Immediately, the expressions of the others fell as they seemed to grasp the essence of Oswald’s words.
"The Abyss is trying to naturalize a child on Eventide," Veronica spoke out loud, realizing that she hadn’t thought that far due to the number of things she had to handle.
"If that happens..." Henry trailed off, unwilling to even consider the consequences of such an act.
One thing was for sure, Eventide was sure to suffer dearly.
Just then, the doors to the hall swung open and an engineer from the communications center came rushing in.
Veronica frowned but didn’t scold him as she knew the current situation was quite delicate. "What is it?"
"Apologies commander, but we just received news from Rey Alejandro and Captain Lucille."
"Speak."
"The Rey claims that the Incursion close to the capital has been dealt with, lauding the Dark Lord as the reason the battle against the 1st-Class Otherworldly succeeded. Also, he said to inform you that he is on his way to aid in the upcoming battle."
Though curious to know how the Dark Lord managed to defeat a 1st-Class Otherworldly, Veronica knew that this was hardly the time so she asked. "Anything else?"
"Yes, Commander. He says that we only have two days to stop the machinations of the Abyss before all hope is lost."
Just then, all Family Heads sensed something causing them to glance in the direction of one of the city gates.
Just then, the latter part of the engineer’s reports floated into their ears.
"...Also, Lady Lucille asks that I inform you of the arrival of the Monarchs. They are here on the behest of the Dark Lord and wish to establish an alliance in the upcoming campaign into the Highlands."
