Chapter 517: A million strong
"Fire!" Leslie exclaimed as several cannons spat fire at his command, decimating the undead at their doorstep.
But with every hundred undead destroyed, several more would take their place, resulting in the attack being more or less a futile endeavor.
But this didn’t stop the Enforcer commander as he continued to scream out commands in due fashion, acting as though he were commanding a great army in the battle against the walking dead.
However, Natasha, who stood on the wall with him, knew better.
They were the only ones standing on the wall with Leslie merely giving an illusion of an army standing strong against the undead army led by a Headless Horseman.
This was the might of a 4th Advancement Mystic of the Warrior Wheel, otherwise known as WeaponMaster.
It gave the Mystic the ability to control all weapons within their area of influence, acting as though they were extensions of one’s body.
Of course, the Mystic needed to have a deep understanding of how the weapon worked to be able to utilize it but that was hardly a problem for Leslie who had engaged in several battles before today’s own.
Natasha wondered how great it would have been if she had gotten to such a level as well.
Perhaps it wouldn’t only be Leslie facing off against a million-strong army.
But with a simple shake of her head, she got rid of those thoughts, aware that they were foolish and without substance.
Why think about what could have been when faced with what is?
And so, she focused, clenching and unclenching her fist as she waited patiently for the enemies to retaliate.
The retaliation came soon after.
If they were alone, the undead wouldn’t have been so organized, and in such a situation, it would have been much easier to deal with them with simple traps and the like.
But with the help of a Headless Horseman, they became a thousand times more troublesome.
The Horseman served as a sort of command post and since the undead were thoughtless creatures, they carried out commands without hesitation, without question.
They could also wield weapons and retain their body’s capability to fight, all as a result of the Headless Horseman’s unique will which served to empower the dead.
In any case, due to this, the undead Leslie and Natasha faced also carried heavy artillery with the Headless Horseman pointing its blade coated in green flames at the wall.
With his command given, the undead aimed the cannons and shot out cannonballs aflame with green fire.
This green flame, born out of the very essence of the Afterlife, ignored defenses and burned one’s lifeforce, sending them off to the Afterlife the moment it so much grazed them.
But neither Natasha nor Leslie revealed any form of apprehension as the cannonballs approached Leslie’s position on the wall.
The Horseman reasoned that with the commander dead, the bombardment would stop.
It was a good strategy that would work under normal circumstances.
Alas, his opponent was a WeaponMaster and one of the worst things a person could do was to attack a WeaponMaster with a weapon.
Only death would follow.
As expected, the cannonballs paused once they entered Leslie’s area of influence, their flames extinguishing as Leslie bathed them with Antimagic after which he sent them flying back to their sender.
A series of explosions occurred, destroying most of the undead cannoneers and their cannons.
The Headless Horseman paused in its tracks, realizing that perhaps it might have been too hasty.
But it determined this minor setback was of no consequence as it continued its charge forward.
"Commander, this is the last of the cannonballs we have." An Enforcer remarked as he, along with a few others, pulled along three crates each with four cannonballs.
"This isn’t nearly enough. Take out all swords, spears, and any other weapon that isn’t already in use." Leslie calmly intoned as he kept his focus on the battlefield.
"But..."
"Just do it!" Leslie ordered.
"Yes sir!"
With that, the Enforcers rushed back to the weapons vault to pick out what Leslie had asked for.
It was easy to tell that Leslie couldn’t keep this up.
If he had reached the level of Grandmaster which was the 5th Advancement of the Warrior Wheel, perhaps, he may have been able to last for a day and a half.
But at the current rate, he could only keep going for two more hours before he would be completely exhausted.
Perhaps that was why he hoped to do as much damage as possible before the army got to their doorstep.
But then again, how much damage could one man cause to a million-strong army, even if he was a Warrior Wheel Mystic?
Perhaps only those mid-range Mystics of the Immortal Wheel who weren’t as limited in their explosive capability could hope to turn the current situation around.
But then again, pointless thoughts.
Just then, she noticed a ballista approaching, noticeably at a height beyond what Leslie could counteract.
It seemed the Headless Horseman was no longer planning on attacking the walls and instead hoped to deal damage to what he thought would be a bustling city.
If only he knew that at this moment, the city’s central district was being covered in all flammable substances from oil to gunpowder to animal fat to wax by the Enforcers that remained.
All it would take is one attack for the city to go up in flames but how could she allow that?
Those flames were meant to destroy the army approaching along with the Horseman so until they had found their way inside, all of them, Natasha couldn’t allow any attacks to touch the city within.
Taking a deep breath, she channeled her focus and aimed a fist at the ballista.
A moment later, it exploded into smithereens with its particles raining down with no consequence.
But that was hardly the end as even more ballistic were shot out and yet, Natasha intercepted them all, feeling a unique drain on her pneuma that nearly left her dizzy.
How could Leslie maintain such a constant strain?... She couldn’t help but wonder but otherwise kept her focus to avoid making a mistake.
Just like that, the two Warrior Wheel Mystics temporarily held the fort against a million-strong army led by a Headless Horseman and empowered by the excess yin permeating the entire continent.
