Chapter 339: Returning to Cance
Chapter 339: Returning to Cance
The meeting with Victoria ended not too long after the demonstration with Fenwick.
It was difficult to let go of the opportunity to gain immortality, albeit a botched one, but that didn’t stop Lord Fitzgerald as he ended up accepting the offer Victoria put forward even as he would take no profit from it.
It was rather surprising that he did so with Alex pondering possible reasons why though he could guess it had something to do with the Duke’s cautious nature.
Regardless, it worked for him since the business had effectively solved the financial problem Constellations would have fallen into had they continued on their current path of depending on Victoria and Ana’s wealth for their covert affairs.
Donning the fanciful night robe he’d found in the wardrobe, he prepared for bed only to pause as he noticed someone’s approach.
It didn’t take long before there was a knock at his room door.
"Come in." He calmly replied.
The doorknob turned with the door opened a moment later, revealing Lord Fitzgerald standing at the other end.
"Father."
"You are still awake." Lord Fitzgerald noted as he came in and closed the door behind him.
"I was just about to get some sleep," Alex replied.
"I see, is this a bad time?"
"Not at all."
"Good, you see, you’d be leaving for Cance officially tomorrow to start in your new position as Head of Department for Final years. It’s a rather busy position, I recall, Marquess Craft held it during my time as a professor. Despite being the same age as me, right now, he is completely bald and even slightly sickly." Fitzgerald reminisced, chuckling intermittently as he continued.
"Anyway, I thought I’d speak with you a bit before you leave. You might not have much time for this old man when you get there."
Alex pursed his lips, scrutinizing the man before him.
At this point, ignoring his position and his affiliations, Fitzgerald was just a man showing concern for the boy he raised.
Though unfamiliar, Alex saw no reason to rebuff the old man and so, calmly intoned. "You don’t have to worry so much. Vance isn’t so far away that I can’t make some time out to visit."
"Oh." Fitzgerald paused, having not expected Alex’s words.
He stared at the young man before letting out a self-deprecating chuckle. "And here I was worried that you’d grow bad feelings for me considering what I did."
"I told Fenwick and I’d tell you the same, I don’t hold anything against you. I’m not a kid to hold such petty things to heart."
"... I see." Nodding with a relieved expression, Lord Fitzgerald remarked. "Thank you. You don’t know the weight you have lifted off my chest."
A smile tugged at the corners of Alex’s lips as he sat on his bed and gestured for Fitzgerald to take a seat beside him.
Obliging, the Duke came over and sat on the bed, taking the time to scrutinize Alex as he commented. "The robe suits you."
"I quite like it."
Silence persisted after with Fitzgerald unsure of what to talk about while Alex, unfamiliar with the situation, found himself lost for words.
Of course, it didn’t take long for him to regain his composure, switching off his Lucius persona and taking on a bit of his information-seeker persona as he began. "I’m curious..."
"About why I accepted the vampire’s offer?"
"... Something like that."
"Greed, Lucius, is a dangerous emotion. Just like anger and lust, it is capable of clouding a man’s judgment, causing him to fall into danger without him knowing it. The vampire would surely have gone to another noble had I rejected and so, that would mean I would lose out on both the nectar and the money. As it is, it’s better to forge an amicable relationship with such a brilliant mind than chase her away due to greed. I hope you remember this when you leave for the academy tomorrow. Do not allow greed to blind you from making the right choices."
Alex remained silent, taking the time to digest Fitzgerald’s words before ultimately nodding. "I will keep your words close."
"It would be for the best." The Duke replied, satisfied with the response.
After that, the duo delved into further topics, ranging from what the Final year professors did and how they went about doing it with Fitzgerald placing special emphasis on Lucius’s relationship with the professors that would be under him.
By the time their conversation ended, the night was already far spent.
"Have a good night." Lord Fitzgerald remarked as he rose to his feet.
"Mn, you too," Alex replied.
Nodding, the Duke turned to take his leave only for Alex to speak up.
"It was great discussing with you after so long. Thank you."
Lord Fitzgerald paused, his back turned to Alex before slowly turning to regard Alex.
With a smile, he replied. "I’m glad you listened. Get some rest."
Watching Fitzgerald leave, Alex settled into the incredibly soft bed and soon after, fell into a deep slumber.
It would be several hours later before he would awaken with the golden rays of the Lightbringer piercing through the window to illuminate his room.
Getting out of bed, Alex quickly got ready to leave as today he would be returning to Cance to meet with the Headmaster in charge of the school administration.
Considering he was getting into a new position, it was paramount that he made himself available before the school calendar began, an event that was supposed to happen two days from now.
Just as he was done getting dressed, there was a knock at the door reminiscent of the one from last night.
"Come in." Alex calmly replied with the door opening to reveal a rejuvenated Fenwick, donning his usual butler attire of a black suit with white gloves and black shoes to match.
"Young Master, breakfast is ready and the Lord is waiting for you downstairs. Will you be joining him?"
Nodding, Alex intoned. "Absolutely."
"Then please, right this way."
