Chapter 340: Meeting the Headmaster

Chapter 340: Meeting the Headmaster

It was a light breakfast, in more ways than one.

Saying his goodbyes, Alex was escorted to the car that would take him back to Farfouth where he was told, he would be meeting the headmaster of the illustrious establishment.

Knocking on the inner car door to alert the driver, the steam engine roared to life, and moments later, amidst waves from both Fitzgerald and Fenwick, Alex began his journey.

It was a silent drive with Alex slightly missing Victoria’s presence though he wouldn’t dare to admit it to her face.

She was crazy enough as it was, it would be best to avoid making it worse.

Letting out a sigh, he relaxed on the red couch placed in the car, running his plans through his head to ensure he hadn’t missed out on anything.

After several hours of silence and internal scrutiny, Alex found himself back in the Pride of Excellence also known as the incredible city of Cance.

***

In a way, Cance and Krobridge were similar in that the cities were built around academic institutions, though unlike the latter, Cance had no extensions, was bigger, and had no abundance of Night Creatures patrolling its streets which was a relief for Alex since he wouldn’t have to deal with another Dark Lord fanatic.

Victoria was enough of a headache already.

However, the most important aspect was the mystical side that abounded in Farfouth, a side that was quickly revealed as Alex approached the academy.

The high walls, already imposing enough weren’t the only thing that caught his eyes as with a subtle change in the color of his irises which lasted for a moment, Alex was able to glimpse the invisible veil that looked like a bubble, albeit more sturdier.

Simple scrutiny allowed him to discern that it was an enchanted barrier, one created using the finest of mystical ingredients to keep out not just troublesome adversaries but also to suppress the possibility of the Abyss stretching its tentacles into the renowned establishment.

The barrier hadn’t always been there, according to what Alex had gleaned from Lucius’s memories.

It became a necessity after what happened to the Academy at Vesta, located on the Eastern path leading to the capital.

A student who had suffered excessive bullying had ended up falling to the depravity of the Abyss and in his lowest moments, orchestrated a plan so diabolical, it led to the deaths of almost ten thousand students.

The incident which was titled by some crazies as the Bloody Night, caused the remaining Academies to take action to ensure such a thing wouldn’t happen again.

It was unfortunate but regardless, ever since then, no such event has ever been replicated.

Perhaps it’s because students were too scared to bully any longer or the professors are just that quick to get to the root of the problem, in any case, the enchanted barrier standing over the Academy was one of the preventive measures put in place to avoid a repeat.

Crossing the gate was the easy part but after, Alex had to get out of the car as none was allowed on school premises with such vehicles though there were indeed exceptions.

Unfortunately, Alex wasn’t one of those with that privilege.

Regardless, he found that there was no need to worry about navigating his way through the academy as a young maid, looking to be in her twenties, donning a brown and white dress approached upon his arrival and with a curtsy, inquired. "Are you Lucius Fitzgerald?"

"Indeed, I am."

"Right this way please." She remarked before methodically turning to lead the way.

"Wait, what about my luggage?"

The maid casually replied without bothering to face him. "Do not worry, Mr. Fitzgerald. Just follow me."

Alex furrowed his brows before deciding to do as instructed.

Once in the main compound, he was ushered to a horse-drawn carriage with the maid taking the hem to drive.

Taken aback at first, Alex soon settled in as he watched her take him further into the campus.

Just like Cance, Farfouth held similar fantastical architecture that made one feel as though they’d been transported to some fantasy world.

The incredibly tall and imposing buildings, the expansive landscape that featured several notable sights ranging from the largest library in the Empire to the largest glasshouse and even that wasn’t enough to fully grasp the scope of the Academy as it was just that large.

In comparison to Krobridge, Farfouth would be at least twice as large.

However, due to the lack of relevant staff and most importantly, students, the school grounds were quite empty with only a few cleaners and gardeners still walking around.

"Are you taking me to see the headmaster?" Alex finally inquired as they neared the building he had inferred was at the center of the expansive landscape that was Farfouth.

The maid made no effort to respond as she stopped the carriage and then got down to usher Alex into the building.

Greeting the receptionist, they moved over to the elevator kept at the center of the first floor and after punching the figure for the 7 floor which was the topmost floor, the duo waited.

The ride was smooth, as smooth as most elevator rides he’d taken back on Earth which was saying much considering technology here was meant to be a bit backwards.

Regardless, he didn’t allow his thoughts to drift as the elevator soon came to a stop and then opened, revealing a massive office covered in rows and rows of books with some scattered about rather haphazardly.

Taking a step into the scattered yet elegant room, Alex habitually scanned the place, taking the sight of art hung on the wall though on closer inspection, one would realize that the ’art’ was mathematical models and alchemical formulas.

Just then, he heard the maid speak. "Master, he has arrived."

"Good." A hoarse voice replied. "Let him quickly come in, I have very little time for useless things."

Walking in the direction the voice came from, Alex came face to face with the scene of a man knee-deep in books and manuscripts.

Donning a brown robe with a wizard hat on his head, the man had graying white hair and his eyes glowed with the determination of a man hungry for more knowledge and upon getting disturbed in his quest, was left quite annoyed.

But it wasn’t the man’s peculiar appearance, disdainful gaze, or even the scattered nature of the place he sat that caught his attention.

No, rather, it was the insignia of a hexagram with an open book at its center and an eye at the center of the book, etched on the man’s robe that grabbed his curiosity with a certain thought blossoming as a result.
