Chapter 338: Immortality?
Chapter 338: Immortality?
The fragility of mortality.
Most would think that becoming a denizen of the Immortal Wheels would allow one to break that unfortunate barrier and indeed, most lucky enough to embark on the path to godhood hoped for immortality above everything else.
Alas, it was not to be so.
It was almost like a cruel work of fate, orchestrated by some greater being which some postulated to be whomever was behind the Will of the World.
Most Immortal Wheel Mystics that hadn’t achieved divinity died early with average life expectancy reaching a meager 120 years, which was a paltry sum compared to 400 for the Mortal Wheels or even 150 for normal humans.
Even those that did achieve divinity which provided longevity would fall prey to madness ensuring that they wouldn’t be able to enjoy a long life.
Scholars had researched, desiring to figure out why this was so and most importantly, what could be done to remedy it but at the end of the day, nary a solution was found and so, denizens of the Immortal Wheels could only soldier on with their dreams of immortality left unfulfilled.
Of course, this didn’t mean that there were not those still delusional enough to seek out methods to prolong their lifespan with most avenues ending up with unsavory consequences as a result of going against providence.
Lord Fitzgerald wasn’t daring enough to act like those foolish ones which was why he decided to live differently like most Immortal Wheel Mystics had decided on which was leaving a mark on the world, either in the form of an accomplishment or a child.
He had chosen the latter which was why Lucius was now seated beside him.
So hearing Victoria claim to hold a means to immortality, he could only scoff in derision. "Do you consider us fools, Lady Victoria?... True immortality is a myth, an unfortunate dream that imbeciles hold onto."
"I didn’t say this provided true immortality though." Victoria immediately countered, her expression as relaxed as when she first made the audacious statement.
"Then..."
"But this can indeed prolong life." She continued while gesturing to the vial she held, cutting off the Duke and leaving him... curious.
Pursing his lips, he glanced at Fenwick, seeking guidance from his closest aide.
However, this was one of those rare times when Fenwick was consumed by his thoughts.
Seeing the vial dangled before his eyes, Fenwick’s greed slowly but surely took center stage.
He was old and in time, he would pass, much earlier than Fitzgerald, and unlike the Duke, he had no one to carry on his legacy and he couldn’t even if he wanted to.
Lord Fitzgerald had made sure he would never be able to have a family.
Though Fenwick held no hatred for losing out on that, at this moment, he wanted nothing more but to believe Victoria’s words.
Noting the change in his butler’s demeanor, Fitzgerald was quick to act. "Fenwick."
"... My Lord, let me test it."
"You..."
"Please, my Lord!... Let me do this." As he spoke, Fenwick turned to face Fitzgerald, revealing the complicated expression on his visage.
The Duke pursed his lips, unsure of what to make of Fenwick’s behavior but knowing best, decided to let him do as he wished.
Seeing his master nod, a melancholic smile tugged at Fenwick’s lips as he turned back to face Victoria who had an expectant look on her face.
"How do I use it?" Fenwick calmly inquired with Victoria replying.
"A drop on the tongue. Less would have no effect, more would have too much of an effect. understood?"
Fenwick nodded as he reached out and took the vial before proceeding to slowly open it, handling it as though it were more valuable than gold... no, perhaps, at this moment, it was.
Taking off the cap, a sweet smell assaulted Fenwick, bringing calm to his tense nerves and leaving him slightly lightheaded.
If anything, the liquid indeed was quite potent.
He gulped hard as he brought the bottle close to his mouth and after taking a whiff of the sweet smell yet again, he placed a drop on his tongue and immediately covered the bottle with Victoria snagging it from him.
Lord Fitzgerald and in extension, every other person in the room watched Fenwick with keen eyes, feeling both tense and expectant about the situation.
Fenwick staggered a few times as he grabbed his throat, letting out a choking sound a few times.
Naturally, this brought a frown to Lord Fitzgerald’s face as he thought that his butler had ended up poisoned.
As he prepared to give the order to capture Victoria, Fenwick suddenly went silent and his body turned rigid.
At the same time, a faint black-and-white light went through his body before ceasing.
Seconds passed as silence persisted in the sitting room before Fitzgerald finally spoke up, revealing concern for his closest aide. "Fenwick, are you okay?"
No response came at first but Fitzgerald inquired yet again. "Fenwick..."
"I am fine, my Lord. In fact, I’m more than fine. I’m great!"
As Fenwick spoke, his voice filled with youthful exuberance, he turned to face Lord Fitzgerald with the latter staring in shock.
Fenwick still looked middle aged but the wrinkles that resembled ridges on a mountain were nowhere to be found with his skin being as smooth as a baby.
"This... this is a miracle." Lord Fitzgerald muttered, utterly baffled by the sight before him.
Taking the opportunity, Victoria explained. "It doesn’t extend one’s lifespan using some mystical means, what NiNe does is simply to rejuvenate the cells of the body, basically slowing down the aging process."
"This, even with this, just a vial like that would be sold for thousands, no, hundreds of thousands of gold." Fitzgerald declared excitedly as he saw the infinite prospects Night’s Nectar held.
Unfortunately, Victoria was quick to burst his bubble. "This vial is my creation, I will decide if you get to take any profit. I am giving you an opportunity to be associated with me which means an endless supply of Nights Nectar to ensure you live very long, but that’s it. Anything more and I shall take my business elsewhere."
Once again, the room was plunged into silence as Lord Fitzgerald held Victoria’s gaze.
