Chapter 815 - 815: Story 815: Evolution of Horror
The metal door buckled inward, shrieking under the relentless assault of clawed hands and writhing tendrils. Mia braced herself, rifle aimed at the weakening barricade, sweat dripping down her temple.
"We can't stay here!" she barked.
Leon was already searching for an exit. "There's a service tunnel ahead!" He motioned toward a rusted maintenance hatch barely visible under debris.
Evelyn swallowed hard. Behind them, the tunnel trembled under the sheer force of the beast. A guttural growl reverberated through the air, deep and unnatural. It wasn't just any monster. It was evolving.
The door finally gave way.
What stood before them wasn't like the others.
A grotesque fusion of muscle and madness, its bulging brain was fully exposed, pulsating with unnatural energy. It had no eyes, only hollow sockets that wept black ichor. Its jaw split wide, revealing a slithering tongue, jagged with serrated barbs.
Evelyn gasped. "It's mutating…"
The creature charged.
Mia fired first, the bullet tearing through its shoulder—but it didn't slow down. Leon yanked Evelyn toward the service hatch, forcing it open with a metallic groan. The beast leaped.
A massive clawed hand slammed down, narrowly missing Mia as she rolled out of the way. The concrete beneath it shattered like brittle glass.
Leon grabbed a rusted pipe and swung—hard. The impact barely phased the creature. Instead, it whipped its grotesque tongue toward him, wrapping around his wrist.
Leon screamed as the barbed tongue tore into his flesh.
Mia fired again—BANG.
The bullet pierced the exposed brain, sending the monster staggering back in a violent seizure.
Evelyn seized the opportunity, dragging Leon toward the hatch. "GO!"
They tumbled into the dark, cold tunnel below.
Above, the creature's howl of rage echoed, but it didn't follow. Instead, it twitched and convulsed. Its body was already shifting—growing.
Mia slammed the hatch shut, panting. "That thing… it's changing."
Evelyn pressed against the wall, trying to steady her breathing. "The Devourer strain—it's evolving faster than we thought."
Leon clutched his bleeding arm, grimacing. "That thing… it knew how to hunt. It wasn't just another zombie."
Mia reloaded, staring at the ceiling above them. The monster's shadow still loomed, but it wasn't trying to break through.
It didn't need to.
It was becoming something worse.
