Horrific Shorts: Zombie Edition
Chapter 816 - 816: Story 816: The Awakening Horror

The underground tunnel was damp, the stench of decay and mildew thick in the air. Leon winced as Evelyn wrapped his wounded arm in cloth, her hands steady despite the fear behind her eyes.

"That thing," Mia muttered, reloading her pistol, "it should've died."

Leon shook his head. "No. It wasn't just another mutation. It knew us."

Silence fell over them. The idea was terrifying. Zombies didn't know. They acted on instinct, on hunger. But this thing—it had studied them.

Above them, the faint scraping of claws against metal sent a chill through their spines. It was still there. Watching. Waiting.

Then, the sound stopped.

Mia swallowed. "I think it's gone."

Leon wasn't so sure. He nodded to the others, motioning deeper into the tunnel. "We need to move."

They pressed forward, the flickering glow of Evelyn's flashlight illuminating something strange ahead.

A corpse.

No, not just a corpse—one of the infected. But it wasn't moving. Its body was twisted, bloated, and covered in strange black veins.

Evelyn crouched beside it, her scientist instincts taking over. "These lesions… this isn't natural."

Mia tensed. "Something's wrong. Let's keep going."

But Leon stopped. His eyes widened.

The body twitched.

A sickening crack echoed through the tunnel as the corpse convulsed violently. Its chest bulged outward before suddenly bursting open—something was crawling out.

Evelyn gasped. "Oh my God…"

From within the ruined corpse, a new form of horror emerged.

Its skin was sickly yellow, its skull partially exposed, revealing a throbbing brain. Its mouth unhinged like a snake's, filled with multiple rows of jagged teeth.

And then—it spoke.

A low, guttural voice, layered with inhuman echoes.

"You… cannot… run…"

Mia shot it instantly, the bullet tearing through its chest—but it kept moving.

Leon swung his knife, slicing at its arm. The flesh peeled away like wet paper, revealing pulsing tendrils beneath.

The creature lunged.

Evelyn barely dodged as its elongated fingers ripped into the concrete wall. Pieces of debris fell around them as they ran.

"Move!" Leon yelled.

Mia turned, pulling a grenade from her belt. "Time to see if this thing can handle fire."

She yanked the pin and threw it.

BOOM!

The explosion sent chunks of the tunnel crumbling down. Smoke filled the air as the creature's shriek echoed, its body engulfed in flame.

Leon pulled Evelyn through a side passage, just as the ceiling collapsed.

Darkness swallowed them.

For a moment, there was silence.

Then—a faint, wet whisper.

"You… cannot… escape…"

And the horror continued.
