Chapter 814 - 814: Story 814: The Howl of the Devourer
The city was a graveyard of echoes—distant gunfire, the rustling of debris, and the gurgling growls of the undead lurking in the shadows. Evelyn barely had time to catch her breath as she and Leon stumbled into an abandoned subway station. The darkness swallowed them whole, offering a brief moment of cover.
Mia climbed down from a collapsed stairwell, rifle slung over her shoulder. "You two looked like hell."
Leon coughed, his hand slick with blood. "Feels worse."
Evelyn pressed her fingers to his wound, wincing. "We need to stop the bleeding."
But before she could do anything, a bone-chilling howl tore through the city above.
Not just any howl.
The Devourer was calling.
Mia's face paled. "It's hunting us."
Leon forced himself upright, gritting his teeth. "We need to keep moving."
Evelyn knew he was right. Staying here was a death sentence.
They moved deeper into the tunnels, the stench of rot thick in the air. Old bones crunched beneath their boots. Mia flicked on her flashlight, casting long shadows against the damp walls.
That's when they saw it.
The writing.
Blood smeared across the tiled walls in frantic, jagged letters. "IT SPEAKS. IT WATCHES. IT NEVER STOPS."
Evelyn's stomach turned. "Someone left this as a warning."
Leon exhaled sharply. "Or a last confession."
Then, the sound of something dripping reached their ears.
Mia turned her light upward.
A corpse dangled from the ceiling, suspended by thick, black tendrils.
Its flesh had been hollowed out, bones shining through the slick remains. The ribcage had been split open like a grotesque flower.
Evelyn gagged. "God… what the hell did this?"
Leon stiffened. "I don't think we want to find out."
Then, the tendrils moved.
Evelyn's breath hitched as the corpse twitched, its head twisting unnaturally.
Mia fired her rifle. BANG!
The shot rang through the tunnels as the corpse lurched forward, its mouth stretching wide in a silent scream.
Then, from deeper within the subway, something answered.
A guttural, wet clicking noise. Like teeth snapping together.
Evelyn's skin crawled. It wasn't alone.
Leon pulled her forward. "RUN!"
The tunnels exploded into chaos.
Dark figures burst from the shadows, their glowing eyes locking onto their prey. The creatures were fast—inhumanly so—crawling on walls and ceilings like rabid insects.
Mia fired wildly, dropping two, but more came skittering from the darkness.
Leon yanked Evelyn through a rusted door, slamming it shut behind them.
For a brief moment, silence.
Then—
BANG. BANG. BANG.
The door dented inward, claws ripping through the metal.
Evelyn backed away, heart pounding.
Then, she heard it—low, rumbling laughter from beyond the door.
The Devourer had found them.
