Chapter 87: More Than Enough Room
Ed was driving back from the city when the communicator rang. It was Zach.
"Hey my friend, how did Elton’s appointment go today?" Zach asked.
"It went well. We will be home in about an hour and he can go over the details of what the doctor found. How’s everything going there?" Ed paused, listening. "You don’t say... really? Is everything okay? Great, his name is what? Okay, well that sounds a lot better. I’ll let everyone know and we will see you at your office when we arrive."
Ed turned to address the passengers in the backseat. "Well, while we have been gone today, things at the ranch got a little busy. Lex went into labor and in thirty-seven minutes Christopher Zachariah Benjamin Ryman was born, weighing in at eleven pounds seven and three-quarter ounces. Baby and dad are doing great, and oh, by the way, Zach said to call him Scooter."
Carter smiled. "Yep, that’s a whole lot easier for the kid, that is for sure."
Ed looked in the rearview mirror just in time to see Raymond lean over and kiss Elton.
"Y’all be careful back there. You don’t want to corrupt that young man sitting between you," Ed teased. Elton blushed.
"Elton, when we get there you need to go see Zach. He’s waiting for us to arrive, but I think you need to knock on his door and walk in alone to show him your little miracle today."
Raymond spoke up. "I couldn’t agree with you more, Ed. I think he needs to show Zach what he’s capable of."
"I second that," Carter declared.
"Well, I guess I’m outvoted on this matter. Yes, I want to go show Mr. Zach. He’s been wonderful throughout this whole ordeal from that night when Ray was born, watching out for both of us up until now. I owe him a lot," Elton said.
"Yeah, I got some pretty big shoes to fill if I’m going to keep you and little Ray safe." Raymond smiled and kissed Elton, and a certain young man was in heaven sitting between his daddy and his beloved father.
---
Ed pulled up to the front of the Z1 main house. Raymond walked around and helped Elton get out of the backseat. Raymond leaned in and removed little Ray from his child seat and held him. Elton took Raymond’s arm and they walked to the front door. Raymond rang the doorbell and Jarvis opened the door. He was so glad to see Elton standing on his own for the first time since he gave birth to Ray.
Elton made his way to Mr. Zach’s office door and knocked.
"Come on in, the door’s open," came the response from inside.
Elton opened the door and walked into Zach’s office. Zach couldn’t believe what his eyes were seeing—Elton was walking on his own without a limp.
Zach got up out of his chair, walked around the desk, and made his way to Elton. He leaned over and gently hugged him. "Looks like Ed knows one hell of a doctor."
"Yes sir, Dr. Stafford was very good. Sir, I have to go back in a month, and until then I need to gradually build my strength back up and be careful. When I go back, he can re-examine me and let me know what my next steps are from then. But I’m having no pain and walking again, sir. I can feel my left leg, foot, and everything else is going back to normal," Elton explained.
Zach smiled. "And what about that young man who is in love with you and little Ray? You gonna let him stay around, or does he need to go back to the city?"
"Mr. Zach, we’re going to take it slow, and I’m definitely in uncharted waters here. I’m excited and scared at the same time, but I think—no sir, I know—I want to make a go of it with him. Little Ray is attached to him. He’s the only father my son has known and he loves us both. I’d be a fool if I sent him away, so he’s going nowhere," Elton said with conviction.
"That is wonderful to hear, Elton. Everyone deserves happiness in their life, and most definitely you deserve it."
Ed knocked on the open door. "Is this a party for two, or can everybody join in?"
"Ed, you, Carter, and Raymond bring that little boy. His dad’s getting a little tired and should go home for a little rest, but I’m so glad to see him up and walking again," Zach replied.
"Yeah, Walt is good, that’s for sure. I’ve known him since boarding school. I just hope he doesn’t tell you about our antics because we were hellions," Ed chuckled.
Zach laughed. "We all were, Ed. Weren’t we all?"
"But these two are going to the house. I want to talk to you and Carter for a minute. Got a few plans, and I think y’all will like these plans, but I want to run them by you first."
---
The walk wasn’t far for Raymond and Elton. Raymond carried little Ray and Elton leaned on him for support.
"What do you have in mind, Zach? I know you got something up your sleeve," Ed asked once they were alone.
"Ed, we need two new pod homes. Between you and me, I know two couples that need a good start, and I want them on your side of the ranch that way they can help Carter and Tim when they get close to their time. But really, we need three expanded pod homes. I’ve got a feeling that someone else may be arriving before long."
"Zach, what do you know that I don’t know?" Ed inquired.
"I’m not going to tell because I’d like parts of my anatomy to stay exactly where they are," Zach replied with a grin.
"I know you and Carter are building a new house that’s going to house your entire family. But I need some more. They need to be designed so that they can be expanded as the families grow. I need one with six bedrooms plus the master suite and a total of three bathrooms. Then the other two can have four bedrooms plus a master suite with a total of three bathrooms also. They all need to have a large living area, large gourmet kitchen, and an eating dining area."
"And they need to be near you all so that the families can blend. I’ve had Paul looking over the structural aspects. Robbie and Roy have been looking over the design differences along with William and Jonathan through their program."
"One shall be for Raymond and Elton with little Ray. The other one, which will mirror their home, will be for your friend Deke and Charlie since they are going to get together big time. Charlie stopped by and told me that he’s decided to try and conceive a child with Deke—the first of many. And I know Charlie; when he puts his mind to it and says ’I’m ready to have a kid,’ it’s going to happen."
"Zach, who is the third one for?" Ed asked curiously.
"You’ll see, Ed. You and Carter will approve—a very nice couple, very refined, looking to get out of the city to raise a family without humans looking over their shoulders."
"Well, Zach, that sounds good to me. Do whatever you want to. I’ll tell Carter that we’re going to be getting neighbors and that Tim and Jared will have friends soon," Ed agreed.
