Help! My Male Employees Are Having Babies!
Chapter 88: The Most Dramatic Day Ever

Chapter 88: The Most Dramatic Day Ever

The next month flew by. Raymond was busy along with Deke, so Carter came with Elton for his follow-up. The visit was great—Walt congratulated him on all of his improvements and gave them a new set of instructions.

"You go home and you and your husband can resume your normal activities in the bedroom. But when you conceive, I want to see you for a double check-up. I want you to see the prenatal team here for a complete workup. I don’t suspect anything will be out of the ordinary, but I err on the side of caution. So y’all can now get ready to leave, and Carter, you can tell Ed we are coming out for a visit and a little announcement."

Carter rolled his eyes. "Let me guess—Sam is pregnant again? It seems like the two of you can’t walk down the hallway without him conceiving one."

"No, not yet, Carter, but we’re working on it. Number four hopefully will be in the oven before you know it," Walt chuckled.

"Walt, you are such a slut puppy."

Suddenly the red line started to ring. Walt picked it up.

"Okay, I understand. I’ve already hit the emergency button and the prenatal team is getting ready. The NNICU will be standing by for when we touch down here again. This’ll be their first time for this kind of emergency. Okay, Lex, keep him breathing and we’re on our way. We will be there in thirty minutes if we don’t hit a headwind—less if we get a tailwind. The new jumper will be flying red line all the way."

There was alarm in Carter’s expression. "Walt, was that the ranch?"

"Yes, it was. They have an emergency. Hyden’s son was born with the umbilical cord wrapped around his neck twice. He wasn’t breathing and his heart wasn’t going. Lex has got him breathing with the assistance of O₂ and he has a weak heartbeat due to a flutter. I’m sorry, but I gotta leave right now to get that baby here."

"I’m calling Ed. He will be sending the second high-speed jumper to pick up Daniel and Hyden along with Zach and bring them here ASAP, following the first one. In fact, they’ll take off beforehand and you can meet them here when you arrive."

"Screw it—I don’t have to ask for permission. I’m calling the heliport. Half of this fucking company is mine, and by gosh that jumper’s just as much mine as it is his. He’ll just ride home in the speeder," Carter declared.

Carter took out his phone and dialed a few numbers. "Henry, drop everything. Get that bird in the air, full crew, and red line it to the Z1. You will pick up three, maybe four passengers, then you will take them to the Hawthorne Medical Center as fast as that bird will fly. The second bird is taking off right now from the heliport here at Hawthorne MC with a full crew, picking up a newborn in distress. Be safe, Henry, and we will be waiting on you when you get here. I’ll call Ed myself."

Carter called Ed and dropped the bombshell.

"I’m on my way to the Medical Center now. I’ll make a few calls to the ranch and let Zach know what you’re doing for the family. I love you, Carter," Ed replied.

---

The first two calls to Zach were not answered; the third one was sent as an emergency code message. Zach answered.

"Ed, we have a problem."

"I know all about it. The birds are on their way. The first will pick up the baby and Lex—there is a full crew of neonatal intensive care medical staff on board. The baby will be flown here to the Hawthorne Medical Center and the NNICU has been placed on full alert. Nothing is being spared; every specialist possible has been alerted to the baby’s arrival. Carter sent the second bird and they will pick up you, Daniel, and Hyden. Y’all will take off before the first bird and head here that way they can be waiting here when their child arrives here. These are our two newest and fastest jumpers available, and they’ve been told to red line them all the way—push them to the max and then some. These units, Zach, are designed with a twenty-five percent reserve. We’re going to max them. The hospital jumper should be there within thirty minutes; likewise, your jumper will too. Is Lex getting the baby ready for transport? Y’all will take off and you will be here waiting for them to arrive. Prayers are for everyone."

Zach thanked Ed for all that he and Carter were doing. "Don’t worry about expenses—we’ve got it covered, Ed. I’ve got a rainy-day fund set aside for this."

"Like hell, Zach. That’s what this hospital was founded for—cases just like this."

---

True to his word, two of the fanciest transport birds you had ever seen set down at the Z1. The first one was white, the second one was silver. Out of the white one came medical staff pouring out. They hit the clinic like you wouldn’t believe. Lex took a step back to let the professionals do their job.

One doctor asked Lex every possible scenario, every possible question, everything that went on before they got there. He looked at Lex. "You’re one hell of a doctor." He patted him on the shoulder and went to work on the baby.

Within eight minutes they were packed up and ready to take baby Patrick to the Medical Center. Lex was standing and patted the preemie incubator and told him, "May the blessings be with you."

The same doctor that had patted him on the shoulder looked at Lex. "We’re not going anywhere without you. You know this baby better than anyone—you delivered him. You’re coming along too, so come on, let’s get going."

Lex looked at Chris. "Don’t worry—Scooter is going to be fine. I’ll take care of him. We got this handled. Now take care of Patrick, take care of your nephew."

The first bird was already in the air and almost out of sight when the Medical Center’s transport started to lift off. The pilot announced, "We’re a little heavy, but we’re going to be just fine. That’s what these birds were built for by Hawthorne Enterprises—just for these kinds of events—and we’re gonna give her a workout."

---

True to his word, Ed, Carter, and Elton were waiting when the first bird touched down. Medical had a wheelchair waiting for Hyden. He was eased into the chair and carried into the building. Before Hyden knew it, he was being gone over by the best OB/GYN specialist there was. This was new for him—his first Genmen patient.

No sooner than the corporate transport lifted off, in came the medical transport.

Ed and everyone—even Zach and Daniel—stood back as they took Patrick off of the transport and placed the incubator on a gurney. It was balls to the walls; Daniel had never seen someone move so quickly as the medical team ran his son inside of the hospital.
