Chapter 78: Help! My Boss Is Trying to Get Me Laid
Tim introduced Luther to Jared and made sure to rub his belly to emphasize that he was pregnant with his child. Luther could not have been any prouder of his brother or the fact that he was going to be an uncle for the very first time.
Zack was very proud of his two sons. The Z1 was doing great, and with the addition of his ECH Enterprises ranch next door, they would be a force to be reckoned with.
Ty bumbled through his question to Sonja. She said yes, but the engagement would be for six months, then they would set a date for a wedding. She wasn’t a lady to be rushed into anything.
William had been busy the entire time taking videos and still shot photos, getting them ready for the company website to show the world exactly how family got along. That’s what the Z1 was—a family, Humans and Genmen living together in peace.
---
Monday morning, Deke was a new man. Everyone in the office could definitely tell he was a new man. He showed everybody Charlie’s photo, pictures of the Z1 and what it really looked like, what the people were. He was very proud of his photos that he got of Elton and little Ray. Charlie had snapped one with him holding Ray, and that was his most favorite.
Raymond was running late this Monday. Deke would have a talk with him later—probably stayed out too late over the weekend and partied too much with the guys. If he was going to take this internship seriously, he definitely needed to apply himself. Getting to work at Hawthorne Enterprises was one thing, but a paid internship in the structural engineering section was even more.
"I’m ten minutes late, I’m sorry. The tram broke down—I caught two more trams just to get here. I got my tickets to show you that I had to pay extra, Sir." Raymond came in apologizing when he hit the door.
Deke looked at the tickets, and the boy was telling the truth.
Raymond was a very hard worker, always trying to prove himself, never backing down from any challenge that he was given.
"So, what was your weekend like, Raymond? Get a lot of drinking done?"
"No, Sir, I don’t drink. Never had a drink and never will, Sir. I studied this weekend—I went through and did figures and redid figures to make sure all the calculations on the reports for the building structures are correct, Sir. You can check the timestamp—I was in here Saturday and most all day Sunday, Sir."
"Good, young man. You’re doing great—keep up the good work." Deke scrubbed Raymond’s head affectionately.
During lunch, Deke sat down with Raymond and shared some of his photos from the weekend. Raymond was amazed, first at the ranch and then at Deke—he didn’t know Deke liked Genmen. He thought he was kind of a loner, but the way he went on about Charlie, well, he must be something. Charlie’s roommate wasn’t bad looking either, by a long shot. What he most couldn’t get over was how cute little Ray was.
Over the next two weeks, every morning Elton and little Ray were a topic. Raymond couldn’t help but ask every question he could about them. Raymond just ate up every photo that he saw of Elton and little Ray.
Deke kind of sensed that Raymond was a little sweet on Genmen, and especially Elton, even though they’d never met.
"Raymond, next week we have a four-day weekend—Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday. What do you say you join me at the ranch? Be a good chance for you to meet Elton and little Ray."
Raymond blushed a bright red. "I guess I can since it’s a holiday. I have to pack a couple of things—I don’t have much, Sir. Just let you know, I only own three suits of clothes, so I’ll have to do laundry while I’m there, Sir."
"Don’t worry about it. We’ll pick you up something on the way—my treat. Can’t have you meeting Elton and little Ray in just your old work clothes. You need to look sharp."
"No, Sir, you don’t need to buy me new clothes. I’ll be okay, really and truly—you don’t need to."
"We’ll argue later. We’re going to pick up a couple suits of clothes, maybe some knee-lengths for outside. But you’re my guest for this weekend, and I always show my guests the best times."
Deke made a phone call and walked away. "Hey Charlie, I’ve got a guest this weekend coming with me, and we need to introduce him to Elton. The young man’s got it so bad—he’s the one who asks about Elton and little Ray every day. I’m going to stop by and pick out some new clothes for him since the kid doesn’t have much in life, but I’ll make him presentable. You work on Elton. I’ll see you both when we get there."
---
Over the next couple of days, Deke got to know quite a bit about Raymond. He was rejected by his birth parents because he wasn’t perfect, raised anywhere that would take him in, applied himself to books because he wasn’t perfect for sports or manual labor with his misshapen hand. He decided he liked structural engineering, at which he excelled.
Wednesday afternoon, Raymond was nervous—he was jumpy as all get out. Deke stopped by the local place where he purchased his clothes and carried Raymond in, picking out five suits, new socks and even new underwear for the young man, two pairs of shoes and a couple of hats. All dressed up, Raymond didn’t look like Raymond—he looked like he belonged on a magazine cover. Studs Muffins R Us. Deke told Raymond this, which caused Raymond to blush even more.
They had to pull over twice because Raymond got sick. He didn’t get car sick—he was just that nervous about meeting Elton and little Ray.
Deke pulled up to his cottage and grabbed some bags, telling Raymond to follow him into the cottage. It was one of the two-bedroom units. This was the first time that Raymond had gotten to see one of the completed units—he was very pleased with the fit and design of all of the trim. He couldn’t believe that he had helped design this home.
Raymond was looking around when he felt a tap on the shoulder. He turned around—it was Deke. Deke straightened his collar, straightened his shirt, and made sure everything was just right, nothing was wrinkled.
"Charlie should have supper almost ready to go on the table, and we have a dinner date."
"Okay, Deke. I’ll wait here until you and Charlie get through."
"No, not me and Charlie. We all have a date—you and I, Charlie, Elton and little Ray have a dinner date."
Raymond panicked. "I’m not ready! I can’t do it—I can’t see him. He can’t see me like this, not me. I can’t do it."
"Take a deep breath, Raymond, and let it out." Deke laughed. "You’re going to be fine. If you think you were surprised, wait a few minutes because Elton doesn’t know about it either. This is a little get-together courtesy of me and Charlie."
"You’ve been eaten up with it since the first time you saw Elton’s photo, and throw in little Ray—it made it even worse on you. And I know for a fact he said for a human, you were really good-looking. But he has no idea the way you feel about him. In fact, he doesn’t have an idea of the way he feels about you. I’ve left my phone unlocked, and he goes straight to my photos all the time—it always ends up on your photograph. So the young man has it just as bad for you as you do for him."
"Both of you have been through a lot in life, and both of you have things that you’re ashamed of that affect your life. But together, two halves make a whole." Deke’s voice was encouraging. "So out the front door, young man."
