Chapter 77: The Runt of the Litter
Chapter 77: The Runt of the Litter
Deke was a sight to be seen—dark wavy hair and he stood six foot seven. He was definitely taller than most Genmen around, and being a gym rat, he was very well developed. Charlie had definitely reeled in a keeper.
From the stack of plates and everything that Deke had in his arms, it looked like they were feeding an army. Charlie knocked on the door. "I’ve got company—we’re coming in. Hope you’re decent."
Elton was on the couch in a nightshirt that didn’t hide his still swollen stomach. He straightened up when he saw Deke. Charlie had landed a cute one—big but cute. Maybe he was one of the new guys that came in with a breeding crew. If he hadn’t been out of commission, he might have even let him do him.
Charlie showed Deke where to put everything on the table and brought him back to introduce him to his roommate. Elton went to stand up.
"No, sit down. You still need your rest." Deke took to one knee so that he was eye level with Elton and that beautiful child, and they spoke.
"I hope you don’t mind that Charlie brought me back to meet you and this wonderful young man that you have cradled in your arms. Will you let me hold him?"
Elton handed the baby over to Deke, who cradled him in his arms so tenderly. For a big man, he was very gentle with the child. He looked like perfect daddy material to Elton.
"I would’ve never dreamed that I would have the honor of being able to hold a Genman infant in my arms ever." Deke smiled as he played with the young child.
It was right then and there that Elton realized that Deke was not a Genman—he was human. Charlie had a human suitor. Elton cleared his throat.
"Did I hear right? You’re human, but your size—you’re massive. I thought you were a Genman, maybe one of the new breeders that had just come in before the celebration."
"Now I’m all human, even though I’m the runt of the family, being the smallest as number nine in the lineup." Deke smiled and chuckled. "I guess mom and dad’s genetics weren’t as good, and I was shortchanged, so I’m the runt."
"If you’re the small one, I don’t want to meet the big ones," Elton remarked. "Nine children in your family—were you all poor or something, and there was no other form of entertainment?"
"No, we were not poor. Mom and dad just liked to screw, and babies kept on falling out."
"Sounds like there might have been a Genman gene somewhere in your background." Elton chuckled. "So inquiring minds want to know—what are your plans for Charlie?"
"Well, we’re going to get to know each other first. We’re going to take it nice and slow, and when we both agree the time is right, we’ll make love for the first time. I don’t want to rush anything—I’ve jumped the gun too many times in the past and always lost my heart. But this guy here, he stole my heart the first time I saw him."
Charlie finished feeding little Ray and put him down for a nap. "Elton, you sure you don’t need anything else?"
"No, I don’t need anything. You just don’t let this one get away—he’s a keeper."

Charlie and Deke left the cottage arm in arm and went back to the party. As they walked, Deke made a comment. "Your roommate is cute. I know several humans that would love to meet him if he ever decides to go that way."
"I’ll mention it to him, but I think he’s off of men altogether—Genman for sure, and I don’t think humans will stand a chance either." Charlie smiled.
"But you never know, Charlie. He might decide to change his taste and swing the other way."
There was music playing when they arrived—a slow waltz. Deke decided to show Charlie his refined side.
All eyes were on them dancing, that’s for sure, when Zack walked up and tapped Deke on the shoulder. "Young man, may I cut in for a couple minutes here? I’ll be sure and bring him right back to you after we dance."
Charlie was embarrassed that he was holding hands with his boss and dancing.
"Looks like you found a good one, and he’s a keeper from what I understand. He’s a lot like you, Charlie—he’s been hurt many times, but from two hurts comes a whole." Zack’s voice was knowing. "And I can tell you he’s moving here after the party. Ed’s transferring Deke here so that he can oversee the structural portion of the new building program. He’s gonna work very closely with William and Paul on the new housing units to make them what they call a pod system, so they’re easily expandable. So you two will be seeing a lot of each other. Expect to be called to the main house for supper one night soon."
Charlie thanked Zack—he didn’t know what else to do. He was definitely embarrassed. His boss was making a pitch for his love life, bringing this new man into his life. How could he ever be so lucky?
William cut in and took a spin around the dance floor with Charlie. "Treat him right. Don’t break his heart. I can tell you right now that Deke is head over heels in love with you, Charlie, so if you don’t want this, let him down gently and let him know now. Because I can tell you, he’s in it for the long haul—he wants the home, that picket fence, and a house full of kids. His and your hybrid kids. He’ll take it slow, he’ll take it gentle with you, he’ll never rush you, he’ll never hurt you at all." William’s expression was serious. "Now let me return you to your future husband."
William returned Charlie to Deke.
"What did you and Ed talk about, may I ask?"
"The future and where we go from here. You and I need to sit down and have a good talk." Charlie replied.
Deke got a down look on his face.
"Baby, cheer up. It’s not bad—I just want us to take it slow and easy and never rush into anything. I can see a long future in front of us, and if you want them, a lot of kids. Our hybrid kids."
Deke took Charlie in his arms right then and there and laid the most passionate, deep kiss on his lips that he had ever had in his life. In fact, the whole dance floor turned around and looked at the two of them.
José tapped Charlie on the shoulder. "It’s getting steamy around here, guys. You need to go get a refreshment and cool off."
Charlie and Deke both laughed and left the dance floor.

The event went great. The new housing plan was announced, the new mockup for the Genman Learning Center Museum and Library was accepted by all that attended, partnerships were solidified, and the biggest announcement was by Zach himself—he introduced everyone, and I mean everyone, to his son Timothy Zachary Spinelli.
Luther was thrilled at finally knowing his father’s secret, and he was okay with dividing the ranch between all of them. In fact, he thought that was the best idea, so that if one of them left, there was still someone there to run the ranch. The Z1 would run forever as long as there was family to run it, and from the looks of Tim, there would be plenty of family.
