Chapter 89: Intruder in the Night

"Mmm... big brother... macarons... half and half..." Rocco mumbled, shifting in his sleep.

Sylas smiled softly at the sight.

Despite his apparent reluctance, it seemed Rocco was offering to share his favorite macarons with him in the dream.

Sylas couldn’t help but be touched—his Rocco truly was an angel.

He gently smiled, noticing Rocco’s hand outstretched, empty as if offering something, and he tenderly took it in his own, whispering a quiet reply.

"...I’m fine. These macarons are yours, Rocco. Eat as much as you want."

Rocco’s face lit up with a smile as he continued to sleep.

Sylas ran his fingers gently over Rocco’s soft, relaxed cheek, and soon Rocco’s breathing became even, signaling he had fallen into a deeper, more peaceful sleep.

Sylas gazed at him for a few more seconds, feeling a sense of contentment, before quietly rising.

He gently caught Rocco’s small body as he rolled to the side, carefully lying him back on the bed and wrapping him in the blanket.

Since Rocco had a habit of rolling around in his sleep, Sylas made sure to wrap him lightly to keep him from falling off.

"...Good night, Rocco. Sleep easy. I’ll protect you," Sylas whispered softly, brushing his bangs away from his forehead before planting a gentle kiss there.

As he gazed at Rocco’s angelic face, now fully revealed by the movement of his hair, Sylas thought for a moment that perhaps it was time to get Rocco’s hair cut.

But he quickly shook his head, deciding against it for now.

It was dangerous to expose such a cute face so clearly.

Rocco was already angelic in both appearance and behavior, and it was far too easy for deranged lunatics to fall for him.

—Just like the man who had snuck in behind him, with the intent to harm Rocco.

"...I’m surprised you have suicidal tendencies."

Sylas carefully tucked a thick blanket over Rocco to make sure he wouldn’t get cold.

Although Rocco usually put on a cheerful front, his body was far weaker than that of an average person.

Even the slightest chill could make him catch a cold.

Tonight, Sylas had to make sure to protect him well.

As he thought about that, he turned to face the first obstacle that had appeared without looking back at Rocco, who was sleeping soundly and comfortably.

As he gently stroked Rocco’s hair, a voice, light and casual, answered from behind.

"That’s harsh. I didn’t come here to kill you."

Finally, Sylas moved his heavy body and slowly turned around.

The balcony door was wide open, and the curtains swayed softly in the night breeze.

Standing with a smug, almost infuriatingly relaxed smile, the man in question narrowed his red eyes slightly in the moonlight.

"Hello, Young Master Sylas. Let’s have a little chat."

How had he managed to get in?

It would be a foolish question to ask.

This bastard had once infiltrated the Di Malvento estate by disguising himself as a stupid dog.

If he had succeeded once, it was only logical that the second time would be easier.

However, Sylas had never expected the man to intrude so far into the heart of the house.

Now, the son of Del Fiore sat comfortably on the sofa, as if it were his own home.

The presence of this man... Sylas knew that he was the very threat he needed to eliminate.

Sylas wanted nothing more than to immediately shoot the bastard with the hidden pistol he kept on him.

He barely managed to suppress that urge, then, with a hint of wariness, he prompted the man to continue his speech.

"...What is it that you want to talk about? If it’s begging for your life, I have no interest in listening."

Sylas couldn’t allow this vile bastard to see Rocco’s adorable sleeping face.

Without getting off the bed, he kept Rocco hidden from the man’s view as he spoke in a low murmur.

Fortunately, Rocco was small as a kitten, so simply moving a little bit toward the edge of the bed made him completely out of sight.

"Don’t be like that. I don’t need to beg for my life. Escaping from your watch is not that hard," the man said with a shallow smile that reeked of insincerity.

Sylas wished he could just kill him right there, but he knew it would be troublesome to make an enemy of all of Del Fiore’s forces.

If the balance between the two major families were to collapse, the Di Malvento would surely find themselves targeted by the rival family’s guns.

And when that time came, Rocco would be the first to be aimed at.

Rocco, having no history of killings or any deeds that would make him feared, would be seen simply as a child.

The more others saw him as harmless, the more danger he was in.

...He couldn’t allow history to repeat itself, not after the day his mother was murdered.

"I’m here to make you an offer today. I’m sick of the old-fashioned ways of the old men... I thought maybe you’d understand my perspective," the man continued, casually pouring himself coffee without asking and taking a sip, as if it were his right.

Sylas couldn’t decide if it was freedom or sheer audacity.

Either way, he was impressed by how little the man feared poison or drugs.

"Come on. It’s unheard of to have such an important conversation at this distance."

"...I don’t plan to talk long. State your business and get out of here," Sylas replied curtly.

"Wow, so scary. Don’t say things like that. If you’re worried, your little brother can join us, if you want."

The man’s eyes twisted with amusement as he continued, his words dripping with malice.

"...Are you scared? Afraid that if you get any farther away, something might happen to your little brother?"

Sylas’s shoulders trembled slightly.

If he were to admit it, perhaps the man had hit a nerve.

No matter how much he tried to intimidate or persuade him, the man showed no sign of leaving until he had his conversation.
